Tonight is my first event at my little Cantina! It started 24 minutes ago... I am not there! I'm so sad and frustrated and bummed!

I haven't been able to log in since this afternoon when the sim I was in crashed and I got logged off. It is now 10pm my time and I still can't get in. I guess if things worked it wouldn't be Second Life, now would it.......

From: Asalis Cruyff
has it occured to anyone that our constant relogging might be slowing their progress down? *continues to log and relog despite what I just so blatantly said :D *

A good question! From what I hear, it's a good idea to STAY IN THE QUEUE and as long as it doesn't give you an error message and take you offline again, just be patient... let it keep grindin' away for ya!

I've been through storms like these before. This will go away.

And... I just logged out and in again.

Up next: I have a tip for you if you're still having PROBLEMS! Stay ch00ned.

Still trying myself, but getting all huffy about it won't help the situation. I'm quite sure the problem is being worked on. Patience is a virtue.

Here is what you can do for SL login problems... for this, or the next time it happens.

(And first, sowwies this is WinXP-PC-specific, but if you have a Mac equiv, boost it on up.)

See, this attached down there is my Second Life shortcut.

I right-click on it... and clickity-click on PROPERTIES to bring up a window aptly named:

Second Life - Torley Torgeson Properties

Next step now!

See where it says Target???

Change that line to this:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -login YOUR_SL_NAME YOUR_SL_PASSWORD

so logically, mine is LIKE (but not exactly) this:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -login Torley Torgeson watermelonsurprise

You can copy and paste that and fill in your own info.

Then, clickity-click APPLY, OK, and you should be good to go.

DOUBLE-CLICK SECOND LIFE AGAIN!!! :D

WATCH THE COMPUTER DO THE HARD WORK FOR YOU!!! YAYZERAMA!!!!!!

(Any error messages will just appear, and will NOT stop the login process.)

P.S. If you've been crafty with your computer, you may have Second Life installed in a different directory. No problemo! If that's the case, just modify your directory accordingly, like:

"Z:\Funny Schtuff\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -login Chaoma Chung xerfHer0z

or it may ALREADY have been modified and you knew where to look to make a Second Life shortcut. BUT! The general principle still applies. More tech info on this can be found here.

P.P.S. Security disclaimer does apply. Delete shortcut after it's worked or don't use it on a shared computer. Keep your personal info personal!

This has been a happy Second Life login problems tip brought to you by Torley Torgeson, Jr. and the collective willpower of the Residents. :)

From: someone
Tell us you know you have a problem, please, and that you're working on it.

Please.
Charles Tremper of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center in D.C. has written something pithy that seems all too apropos:
Denial is a common tactic that substitutes deliberate ignorance for thoughtful planning.
Tolstoy, somewhat less concisely, said:
At the approach of danger there are always two voices that speak with equal force in the heart of man: one very reasonably tells the man to consider the nature of the danger and the means of avoiding it; the other even more reasonable says that it is too painful and harassing to think of the danger, since it is not a man's power to provide for everything and escape from the general march of events; and that it is therefore better to turn aside from the painful subject till it has come, and to think of what is pleasant. In solitude a man generally yields to the first voice; in society to the second.
but he had a huge novel to fill. Paraphrasing Bill W.'s seminal 1953 work:
We admitted we were powerless over the codebase — that our second lives had become unmanageable.
seems like it might be a a good first step at this juncture, but as many people know, that sort of admission can be extremely difficult.

They know there are grave problems; that they are acknowledging them at all is a big step forward for them. That they think that tommorrow's patch will be a panacea is a conceit wholly unsupported by past experience.

So it goes.
