This is better, and is free.

The other one is way fancier, so it may be more bells and whistles than substance. And this version looks more geekie and hardcore geeks more often than not go for substance in their wares as opposed to bells and whistles...hence Linux i suppose.

Ran the first test. Found an interesting problem in my DVD drive, so I can yank that out and put a new one in.

But everything else is fine. RAM, CPU, HDD, all good.

Trying the second one, not getting any results at all.

What an odd problem.

Well if you did a full HD wipe, and fresh install, and still have the same problem, then no matter what the software says, you most likely have some sort of hardware issue. Especially considering SL was working fine and then just went bonkers.

I have this half faint half clear memory of someone reporting having spotted a problem that when under high latency or some other network lag spike thing or some other type of network mishap, SL would freeze and take the whole operating system with it, untill it hears from the server again or manages to figure out it should time out (the second situation was rare, and shouldn't be expected)

anyone knows more about that or a similar bug?

First they came for the ageplayers,
I remained silent 'cause I wasn't an ageplayer

Then they came for the furries,
I didn't protest 'cause I wasn't a furry

Then they came for the goreans,
I didn't speak up because I wasn't gorean

Then they came for me,
and there wasn't anyone left to speak up for me

Yeah, it's definitely hardware. Hard drive is running hot, I checked. And now I lost picture on that computer.
Then again, everything in there is hot.

Oh well. At least I know where to start now.

I've heard people calling SL a worse harddisk killer than crappy bittorrent apps

Sweet!

Well, not really sweet like, yay your hard drive is and video are funky, but YAY you have a place to start now and will probably suss this out as quickly as funds will allow you. Sucks that it will cost $ though.

Good luck with getting it fixed Paul and try to keep us updated on the final outcome! :)

Well, the bad news is, I'm flat broke. I was hoping I could sell stuff in SL to make some money. So I'm going to try to save the parts instead of replacing.

UPDATE: Computer's working fine, I yanked one PCI card out that I didn't need, cooled things a bit, now it's good.

Second Life still won't run though.

So what do you think needs to be replaced that would allow SL to run again?

Could it possibly be your video card?

As a troubleshooting step, I tried a couple third party viewers. They don't run, either. I'm so stumped right now.

I'm going to have to try some things, see what my card can do.

what exactly happens when you try to run the official viewer this time?

I just tried some of my other games. NWN2 and CoH, and they run fine.

What's happening when I try to run SL is the program does it's "detecting hardware" bit, then the SL window comes up. SL then eats up 100% resources on my dual core, 3.0 GHz processor, and inches towards the login screen. If I try to select the program at all, it locks up completely, Windows even gives me the "not responding" messages.

Same thing happens with third party viewers, too.

After an uninstall and reinstall, it's BETTER. But still a slideshow running 30 second slides.

So maybe "better" isn't the right word. Maybe I should go with "less terrible".

are the OpenGL drivers updated? (the other games could be using DX, while SL only goes with OpenGL, with bad drivers (like probably the ones MS provides) SL might be triggering software rendering mode)

so a clean wipe of the whole system, a PCI card removal and getting rid of bad drivers and putting good ones in was all that was necessary this whole time? xD

a convergence of factors steered you away from obvious solutions on each step

it was a silent moving target in a noisy dark room

See, some real techno-know how person comes in and POOF - problem fixed.

I'm like a blind & deaf person trying to cross the street at the corner of Wilshire & Westwood during rush hour when it comes to tech stuff...But i try! :D

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes to glance at the situation and think of something you haven't.

from all that has been reported, I don't think my participation was all that significant when compared to the whole, I have the impression the problem transformed during time, eventually, such strategy to avoid being solved turned out to be a russian roulette, the problem pulled the trigger enough times that eventually the filled chamber was fired, I didn't know the solution to the previous versions of the problem, it kept changing as people and Paul himself attempted finding the solution, eventually the problem changed into somthing someone that was around knew how to fix.

Isn't that the basic definition of troubleshooting? Keep trying crap until something works?

Nope, full HDD wipe and reinstall.

What wipe program did you use? That is an incredibaly fast one whatever it is. The last full hard drive wipe I did was on a 180 gig HD and took about 15 hours (using Killdisk.......free and not capable of DoD wipes, but adequate for my purposes). The formating after that wipe took about 45 mins and then the reinstalling of Windows XP took a little over 2 hours.

I much prefer studying ll avaiable info, and using logic and such instead of what often is the approach I see when people troubleshoot stuff, either nuking all the mountains killing endangered species for the off-chance somthign bad was somewhere in there, or simply blindly throwing a dart on a chart of standard non-specific often superstitious solutions that fix problems "miraculously" without any one knowing why it had anything to do with anything

edit:though computers in general, and SL in specific, have been turned me into a believer a little bit somtimes
