STILL can't start SL (With Log)

Having tried all of the other suggestions, three different nVidia drivers, and version 1.19, 1.20, of SL, and two different video cards (including one that USED to work), I still can't get in.

In a last desperate hope, I downloaded the latest Beta, and that didn't work either. The log file looks substantially the same.

Is there anyone on the actual development team looking at this? Or are we all the blind leading the blind?

Blind leading the blind. :)

No one here is, in any way, affiated with Linden Lab technical support. The logs you are posting actually do very little for anyone to offer much help to you. Just your computer specs, discription of the problem, what you've done to try to fix, and type of internet connection are far more helpful for anyone here to offer suggestions.

This maybe the answer:
2008-08-16T02:38:39Z WARNING: LLWindowManager::createWindow: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window.
2008-08-16T02:38:39Z WARNING: LLViewerWindow::LLViewerWindow: Unable to create window, be sure screen is set at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings

When you install new Graphic Drivers, always double check they have set the colour depth to High (32bit), SL will not run on anything less. Also check the refresh rates to suit your monitor, LCD panels for instance refresh at 60htz.

No, that was one of the first things that lept out at me when I first found the log files, but that has never been the problem. In my other thread, someone pointed out that that's just a generic error message that is put up when SL can't create a window.

Heh, after downloading the beta, the pages about reporting errors pointed to the forum as a place to report them.

It would be a hell of a catch-22 if the only place to talk to one of the folks working on the next version would be in-game, when you can't launch it.

Detailed processor specs are actually in the middle of the log. In short, an AMD Athalon - Socket A type, running at a hair under 1.4 GHz. I have 1 gig of memory, and a brand new nVidia 7300 GT card by BFG Tech, with the latest drivers 175.19 from the nVidia site (which have been loaded and re-loaded several times after trying the other versions people have suggested).

Nothing anyone has said explains why this combination shouldn't work. It meets all of the specs posted on the site. Hell, it used to work with my old 5200 video card (But when I tried to switch back, it wouldn't work either).

I see lots of people posting that they can't get SL to launch with various cards that the specs say should work. They all get the video driver error message, which I'm beginning to wonder may not be the real problem.

Just a random thought, do you have Silverlight installed?

Could you provide your system specs in a short simple manner? They may be in the other thread but it's good to have things in one place.

There are other files in the logs folder than the one you posted. You might look at those and see if they provide any clues.

You can use a site like http://cl1p.net/ to store a copy of files and post their url rather than post big text files. Big text file posts seem to bother some people. A site like http://cl1p.net/ let's you make your info public without disturbing people.

If you are getting the same result with two different cards, maybe it's the socket or further back on the board.

I don't recall if your board has an integrated onboard GPU, if it does you could try using that just for information's sake.

Have you tried any other OpenGL application? Looks like it is video issue. maybe make sure your computers chipset drivers are up to date or needs updating.

maybe try this: http://www.infinity-universe.com/opengl/GeomBench/

I have tried 175.19 (The latest) 175.16 (The one that worked with the old card) and 169.21 Which folks linked me to in the other thread saying that it should work. None of them work.

Link isn't working. Did a search on GeomBench, found another server... It's not working either.

It's becoming clear to me that the Universe doesn't want me logging on to Second Life.

Okay, found a copy on MajorGeeks. I have to quit everything to run it. I'll let you know what it says.

Okay, I ran the OpenGL benchmark. It proves that I DO have OpenGL, (And it's pretty slow). But THIS might be a clue from the header of the results:

Looking again at the warnings... does this actually exist?
C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings_aditi_beta. xml

Did you install it to a different directory, log in a different user account, does the desktop icon target actually point to the correct folder for this version of SL?

The report you supplied was having big issues trying to find the correct folders for the xml files.

OpenGL is a composite driver that comes from your Graphic Drivers downloaded by the manufacturer/supplier of the GC. Looks as though you are running on basic Microsoft OS drivers.

Yeah what AWM said... It should be an Nvidia version not Microsoft... Here is mine but for ATI..

How that might effect SL not sure... Maybe the new video drivers are not taking.

I have a feeling the settings file may be reported as missing because it's a fresh install. One can delete their settings file and default ones are created.

I also suspect the accuracy or actual meaning of the benchmark tests line "GDI Generic". Although, who knows, Yardley's tried two cards and multiple drivers, maybe he forgot to install proper drivers after doing the last uninstall. I could see myself doing that after 6 or more uninstall, drivercleaner, reinstall cycles.

So I'm still running the very latest beta driver that's supposed to support OpenGL 3.0 (but might not on this hardware....)

i use one called DriverCleaner that used to be free, but apparently it costs $9.99 now. It's at http://www.drivercleaner.net .

There's free ones around, I see one called Driver Sweeper, which I have never used and thus can't comment on, at http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655 .

I wonder what result you would get trying some other opengl games.

if you haven't used a driver cleaner (I used the free one Suezanne recommended thats now 9.95? I think you can find it free still)

I had this issue after a driver update, with changing them so many times files get left behind and corrupted. what it does is completely remove all the video drivers, you re start, and not allow windows to install or find drivers, and install the Nvidia driver form the desk top (save it there for ease.) maybe you have tried this as well already but just an in case :) also I would not use the 177 driver, I know I have read some issues with it here in the forums the past couple days, I would stick with 169.___ if you can

... the other thing I notice, in your log file is, 81% of your memory in use. thats a whole lot! this shouldn't stop SL from loading though, but maybe check what all is using that memory.

DriverSweeper is free.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655

I use it, seems to work.

1) uninstall drivers via add/remove
2) reboot
3) sweep
4) install drivers

Make sure to *only* sweep for nVidia-display and not the nVidia chipset.

For a 7300 use the 169.xx series drivers. I run a 7800gs on my other computer with these.

The 177.xx is beta for stuff that's only supported by 8000 and better cards anyways.

---

If things are terribly awry, you may want to also run CCleaner's registry cleaner, then *reboot again* in between sweeping and installing (make it step 3b).

As a side note, I just found this wonderful OpenGL utility called OpenGL Extensions Viewer 3.0.

http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/download.html

It gives you full detail about the OpenGL renderers you have installed and the associated extensions (And even has an up to date list of possible extensions which are shown in gray) It even lists what percentage of the various standards are supported by your current setup.

This tool also confirms that I do not have nVidia's OpenGL library running.

I also have to wonder about who is running Vista vs XP. I ran another development tool called "Dependency Walker" on SL itself, and it wants a missing file called DWMAPI.DLL, which apparently is a vista file according to Google. I have to wonder if the SL developers are developing under Vista and just assuming everything's cool under XP....

Do you have the little nVidia settings icon in the system tray?

Does it say anything about OpenGl in there?

It looks like your system is a 4x AGP.

What is the motherboard? It might well be listed there but I don't see it in all the mass of technical stuff.

When you uninstall the video drivers, and reboot, what exactly happens when you reboot, and how do you respond?

If you do Control Panel / Display / Settings / Advanced / Troubleshoot , what does it show for hardware acceleration?

I would also ask which version of the SL Client you are using. The latest Client has some very nasty GC driver issues. It corrupts the drivers in memory. I use version 1.19 which is quite stable when using Vista and XP with a nVidia card. The new client crashes quite regularily reporting that the GC drivers have 'recovered' from corruption, but with only a blank screen in the viewer, as it cannot recover without a reboot.

I have the latest versions of .NET Framework on all my systems, which judging by the many issues reported here, I do not suffer. SL for Windows, is supported by .NET Framework.
