How do you register an Alt?

In the event the last name I want becomes available again, I would like to know the page or what to click through to get to this.

The website is annoying about all this. The TOS doesn't give any details at all just they you have to pay a fee ( does not state the fee). I found something in some part of Support that says it's 9.95 USD per account but it doesn't really tell you how to go about it. So vague as to tell you you will go to Help Island when you sign up as a new account.

People are probably laughing at this. They either don't know or never will register any of their alts.

For the other spectrum,.. I'm not going to pay hundreds yearly to get a name I don't like and switch to a Free Name currently unavaiable. I'm just going to wait it out.

You create your Alt the same way you created your first account. There is no fee. it is merely a seperate account. The website is incorrect. It can be free or premium. And Last names are retired once they are taken down. LL doesn't put them back up.

You are incorrect about both things.

You are supposed to register your Alt Accounts. However, the majority of people do not either because they are not aware or because they do not want to pay for additional accounts. The Fee has changed with time but it is currently there at $9.95

As for last names, they do not retire perm. They cycle through random last names, though the ammount you have to choose from has been increaseing. The ammount of time before a last name becomes available again is unknown and I know that Lindens use to have some hand in New last names and returning last names.

Brenda was correct, LL is not currently charging for alt accounts. See this recent thread where a user got confirmation from LL support about this.

According to Torley Linden, retired names are normally really retired, see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden/Office_Hours/2007-07-13

Also retirement is explained in the SL knowledge base at http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=4195

Okay, I talked to a Mentor that actually registers their Alts. They said you just add your Credit Card information and will be charged the Alt fee. They however suggested that I double check with phone support since so many people are not aware of this.

Yet another example of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. I was told, via LL Support, that alt accounts are free. I then checked AGAIN a few days ago - because of this very thread - by putting in another ticket saying "are you absolutely sure, because the website is saying you *do* have to pay", and was assured yet again that they're free. This is what Marc from LL Support said on 24 January:

Hi there,

Thanks for your concern.

However, I can confirm that we are not currently charging for Alt Accounts.

The knowledge base article is mainly there to stop overzealous Residents creating bot accounts, and serves as a warning, not an explanation of current policy.

Regards,

Marc

No, that's not correct. The mentor might have alts that were created quite a long time ago, as it's my understanding they did charge back in the day. However, I registered an alt several months ago & entered credit card information, immediately. The same credit card and same account information that I use for my main, I should add. The credit card was never charged a fee for the alt. Two weeks after creating the alt, I made her premium to take advantage of group land bonus and have only ever been charged the premium monthly fee of $9,95 for her. That's the same as any premium monthly fee, though, not because she's an alt.
