I originally had this posted in the "New ATI catalyst 3.8 drivers out" thread in this forum, but was re-editing it so much, it was getting hard to manage. Heres what I had: From: someone Im having major problems with the Catalyst 3.8 drivers... am fiddling with settings atm to try and not crash directly upon entry to the world.
WOOT!! OMG It worked! I turned off Object Bump Map (damn) and I can walk and move my camera without immediately crashing... Spread the word!!
Lindens, I want this fixed, Now I dont get to experiance bump mapping on objects for awhile
Im running on a Dell Inspiron 8200, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB video Ram, on an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000. I downloaded a copy of the 3.8 drivers from ATI.com, but they wouldnt work (by default) w/ mobility (OEM issue). So I downloaded the Mobility Modder from driverheaven.net and modded the driver installer, and all is peachy (Save Object Bump Mapping, of course)
EDIT:
AARRGH! It happened again... Just after I was finishing this post, I moved again in game, and responded to an IM... and I crashed with the same appearence (cmd.exe window pops up)
I turned off bump mapping for avitars now.. trying again...
Responce: Nope, crashed again.
Test 5: Turning off all unnecessessarry effects.
Crashed AGAIN. This time I had Object and Avitar Bump Map off, Object, Tree, and Avitar detail sliders to minimum... Trying again.. unchecking the things that are supposed to make it 'fast' now.
Ok, unchecked all checkboxes, including avitar vertex program and AGP graphics accelleration, and I ran smoothly. My avitar was glossy/shiny though, so I turned it back on (while in-game). Then a few minutes after, there was this black shadow around my avitar. I tryed turning avitar vertex program back off, but as I closed the prefrences window, I crashed.
Trying again, turning everything back on (to defaults) except the avitar vertex program thing. Ill keep posted with updates to my situation.

Ok... update to the all defaults-save avatar vertex program thing... I crashed immediately upon entering SL.. kind of like how I did when I first logged in.
Trying again with the bumpmapping not on.

*sigh* ATI needs to learn how to make drivers >.<
out of all the versions they've released theres only 2 or 3 that don't mess something up horribly...

downgraded to 3.7 and all is well. How reliably are you running... do you have bump mapping on?

I'm using Catalyst 3.7. No crashes *yet*, although I did in the preview so much that I couldn't play it.
I still see texture banding, but no crashes. Just an FYI for those who reported crashing and have Catalyst 3.8.
I have an ATI 9700 Pro 128MB.
Bump mapping is off. If I turn it on, all land turns white and text in dialog boxes disappears. Not helpful. I had to click on things by memory to disable bump mapping.

What hardware are you guys running?
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce the crashes at all on my development machine (which has a Radeon 9800 in it).
Are these crashes where the ATI driver is catching the crash (VPU Recovery(?)), or are you just getting a "traditional" crash - i.e. straight to the crash reporter?
Also, you might want to try tweaking the settings on your SMARTGART panel in your ATI Display properties? You might want to try turning those down to see if things work any better.

Doug, For me I get three different kinds of crashes. Type A: The screen turns into a mess of interlaced graphic poo. That's the technical term. I have to Endtask Second Life and restart. Type B: I get an empty DOS box and a billion dialogs telling me that I've crashed. One of the info buttons tells me that it's related to the graphics card. Type C: When edting my av my OS freezes. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. Have to reboot. Also happens when many avatars are nearby.

My crash types: 1: Game freezes entire OS but if I wait 30 seconds, ATi's VPU recovery kicks in, freezes SL, gives me my computer back. 2: Game crashes, gives me dialogue asking what went wrong. Edit: Just got number.... 3: My entire OS crashes and goes black and crashes my system so hard that my monitor acts as though it were unplugged! I am forced to reset in this situation. Ouch. None of these happen with the ability to hit the "Quit" or "Continue" buttons that normally happen when somthing in Second Life crashes. Hardware:ATi Radeon 8500 (64MB) Cat 3.8 drivers. AMD Athlon XP 2100+ Asus A7S333 mainboard. 768MB DDR memory. I'll try playing with Smartgart... ONE last thing. Every 2 to 4th time that I crash, it forces my regularly hidden Windows taskbar to never hide until I reboot. Does anybody know how to fix this?

One other question for you guys... When you get the ATI VPU recovery crashes, are you guys rebooting your system immediately afterwards? When this happened (NOT on the current build ) to me, I found that you pretty much had to reboot the system afterwards for stuff to work reliably afterwards. - Doug

I'd been having a lot of problems with my ATI card (Radeon 9000 64MB in a Dell 530 Workstation) ever since the 3.2 version of the driver, but I just upgraded to the most current bios and set the AGP aperture to 64MB (in bios settings) and everything runs like a charm. For what it's worth.

I'm now getting all symptoms Cubey says on top of what I've said.
When the VPU recovers I don't reboot, because otherwise, wtf would be the point of the VPU? You might as well take every single VPU crash that we get as "made you reboot" which only makes the glitches that much worse looking. Rebooting after a VPU crash doesn't help stability at all either, it's exactly the same.

For comparisons...
I'm running a Radeon 9000, 128 MB DDR, with 3.8 drivers... no problems whatsoever.
I've turned off all the "extra" stuff in the ATI control panel, like FSAA, smartgart, and all that.
You know, silly, off-the-wall suggestion here.. is it possible that radeon troubles might have something to do with refresh rates? My card has never behaved well with refresh rates... I had to get a program that manually fixes refresh rates in the registry (ATIRefresh or something like that) for my eyes to not collapse.

Lordfly that would be interesting... I run at 100mhz refresh whereas it's not suggested

LF Do refresh rates apply with LCD monitors?

From: someone Originally posted by Cubey Terra Type A: The screen turns into a mess of interlaced graphic poo. That's the technical term. I have to Endtask Second Life and restart.
Type B: I get an empty DOS box and a billion dialogs telling me that I've crashed. One of the info buttons tells me that it's related to the graphics card. Hmmm, this may not be ATI specific. I've been having major problems on two machines, both with nvidia cards. I've had type A happen once. My screen turned to garbage and I had to reboot. Until it came back up I wondered if my monitor had just gone on the blink. That computer has an nividia ti4600. That only happened once, but for the past few days if I log on with that machine I freeze up immediately and graphics load sporadicly with missing poly's and bad flickering. About every 30 seconds I get control again and it lasts about a second and then it locks again. I have to ctrl-alt-del it. On my other machine I have an nvidia 5600FX and on that one the monitor goes into what seems to be like sleep mode (light goes into no signal mode and the screen goes black). Nothing but a reboot brings it back. Problems on both machines happen in windowed or full screen mode. Now here's the really weird thing... this started happening for me several days ago BEFORE 1.1. I was hoping 1.1 would clear it up but it's the same problems. When my monitor wigged on the first machine (prior to 1,1 but I might have been in the preview at the time), and then the monitor shutting off on the second, I also wondered if this was maybe refresh rate related. Nothing I've tried has fixed it so far which included updating the drivers and installing DX9.0b. My problems might be unrelated but it sure seems odd.
