From: Osgeld Barmy yea but why would i want to pay 2-3 grand for less performance than my 600 buck 2 year old PC?
being serious here, 1.9ghz (real speed) amd athalon 1.5gb of ram and a geforce 6600GT
I was in a full sim most of the night yesterday standing infront of the crowd and getting 20fps 99% of the time (@ 1280x1024 default options) You're comparing the price of a notebook computer to a desktop system. Notebooks command a price premium for any given level of performance, especially video performance, because of the power budget limitations.

From: Shirley Marquez You're comparing the price of a notebook computer to a desktop system. Notebooks command a price premium for any given level of performance, especially video performance, because of the power budget limitations. no really i was looking at a desktop on their website From: Argent Stonecutter Not 3x more, closer to $200 to $400 depending on the model. Their profit margin's been pretty consistently 30-40 percent. maby on their package machines, i was refering to individual parts, my bad From: Argent Stonecutter They racked up hundreds of dollars in repair bills for the right not to have to know about removing the CPU and holding down the reset button for 30 seconds. I've had PC users willing to spend hundreds of dollars for me to download Spybot Search and Destroy for them. one specific example was an elderley lady who moved into town from out of state, just for being unplugged her apple rewarded her with a repair bill, thats not cool hip or stylish From: Argent Stonecutter "Both"? I've used Debian, Redhat (and Fedora variants), Suse, and Slackware, and I know of at least a dozen more. Which of these are you thinking of as "both"? well i will admit since im not in love with steve jobs i dont keep up with linux and apple, last time i delt with it it was yellowdog and something else (name escapes me) and yes! apple does run unix programs, as of 1999 (when i got my osx beta disk) but MAC OS programs have and still suffer from the void with some major trickery one can get a unix kernel to boot on a commadore amigia 2000 within its native os, but im not gonna go around proclaiming its the best thing since sliced bread, just like i dont applaud ford for introducing all wheel drive on its cars in the mid 1990's when i could have had it on a suberu for 20+ years as far as gaming, i dont play much on the computer anymore, but i used to and that was a major factor for me for the longest time also windows may be alot of things but its not crippleware, and ive never had to register it, altho i use windows 2k beucase i for one do not need bubbly icons, purdy windowbars , and can i wipe your ass question boxes to use my computer, and with mac, since most of the software i own for it is OS9 stuff, its basicly the same reason, oh look aqua, oh look poser runs like ass now, reboot (admitidly i have a slow old mac) From: Argent Stonecutter Ah, that would be it. You're a recovering Appleholic. I'm not... I use everything, I don't have to remind myself not to touch the Demon Fruit any more.
if anything apples have given me nothing but hangovers, hey 3 grand on that ][e, well you need this 700 80collum graphics card if you want to write a paper, oh wanna save it, 500 bucks for a disk drive + printer+monitor that you can read (not your tv) headache Mac IIcx heres the next to the top of the line macintosh, oh wait you cant run any of this cool new software the IIcx is a 24 bit cpu, the others have a 32bit cpu your SOL perfoma, yea perfoma like a peice o shit, stupid thing couldnt even keep up with me typing at my slow rate, oh yea my cousin accidently put in a copy of pfs write for the mac classic, and ran it, effectivly truning it into a paperweight (funny ive got wing commander 2 on my pc right now and it runs without screwing up the os) Powermac 8500, oh look it takes standard dimms, phzzt crackle (smoke) dead machine, ram still worked tho, it went back in my pc heh ibook (original "tangerine" we shot one of these with a .22 and it still worked, i drop it less than 3 feet onto carpet the kb poped out and the lcd cracked (sigh, truned it in for a 400mhz celeron, and got some money back and it was nearly2x as fast) Powermac 8500 (number2) this one is the one i own now, its got g3 upgrade processors in it, a gig of ram, a large scsi disk and a ati video card... needed a new mouse and kb tho, that was 180$ (i dont really need those 3 keys anyway) but jesus im currently sitting infront of an AT keyboard and i can still plug my logitec serial mouse into my pc... oh lets not forget the bios hack i had to install to get it to run osX(it came with 9), i dont remember ever having to hack my bios on my pc to upgrade windows 1 stinking version proprietary = bad, headace, cost apple = proprietary, altho they have gotten much MUCH better since the G3

Just a note for folks: Windows Vista will most likely NOT run on a Mac. Seems Microsoft has reasons for taking so long with the release- they're re-writing it! When's the last time you heard of Microsoft completely re-writing Windows instead of just patching it? Vista's gonna be a headache for those of us that have to fix other's computers cuz we're gonna have to learn some new stuff. And dont forget- DirectX 10 is in no way an update to DX9. Its a whole NEW thing!!! Supposedly will alleviate the CPU-GPU bottleneck. The catch? You only get it truly with a DX10 Capable Video Card, NOT a "compatible" card. BTW- Been asking around for this: Has anyone with a Mac, tried running standard PC Benchmark software using Boot Camp & Windows XP? Software like 3D Mark and PC Mark?? I hear people saying "This Windows game works just fine on the Mac", but does that mean graphics are turned down or all the way up? Stuff like that.

From: Osgeld Barmy maby on their package machines, i was refering to individual parts, my bad Have you looked at replacing parts on a Compaq or HP, where they're not generic? And where they're generic you can use generic parts in the Mac too. And, well, I've got some really nasty Microsoft horror stories, and support horror stories from all companies. They all suck. I don't understand your point about Mac OS programs and "the void". And, no, you can't get a UNIX kernel to boot within AmigaOS. From: someone also windows may be alot of things but its not crippleware It's got code throughout the system specifically to limit its usefulness unless you buy an upgraded version. For example, there's a handful of registry entries differentiating XP Home and XP Pro or 2000 Workstation and 2000 Server... and code that sits there monitoring these variables at all time so you can't change them all at once. From: someone i use windows 2k beucase i for one do not need bubbly icons But you can't buy 2000 any more, so what does that matter to someone buying a new computer? (bunch of complaints about old Apple hardware) Since the 7500 Macs have basically been PCs with Power PC CPUs instead of x86 CPUs. Since Apple had shit for an OS in that era (OS 9 makes Windows 98 look good) I couldn't care less about that hardware. I'm talking about today. From: someone proprietary = bad, headace, cost That goes for software too, and software problems are harder to get away from. And Windows is top to bottom designed and controlled by Microsoft... and it shows.

I can walk into my local Best Buy, pick a game off the shelf, go home and install it, and it'll run the first time, every time, reliably.
THAT is value for my money.

Eer... on Linux, I can run almost EVERYTHING I run in windows, and - as far as apps go - if it doesn't easly run in Linux, there is a compariable and compatable app for Linux that is FREE. The only exception is AutoCAD... I don't think that one can even run in WINE, sadly :/ With games, there are some popular titles out there that run in Linux (like Neverwinter Nights and this very "game", Second Life ) BETTER than windows, and pretty much any game you throw at WINE can be run within a few months of it being released. I don't know if the same is true of Mac software... I can't think of anything (except itunes/quicktime) that is really 'Mac specific' off the top of my head. Of course, there's a very big learning curve with Linux in comparrison with Windows and OS*... But if people are willing to pay for ease of use (and obviously, they are!), then more power to them. All that said... now I'm REALLY curious... anyone want to donate a couple intel Macs to me, so I can have one with a Linux distro running both a Windows and OSX emulator and one running OSX and Windows with Bootcamp, to test along with my AMD64 PC running 32-bit windows and 64-bit Linux, and my AMDXP PC running 32-bit WIndows, and Linux with a windows emulator? Seriously, I'd make the sacrifice of all that time in the name of research!

THAT is value for my money. That's just games though. Adults use computers too, and they have different needs.

From: Khashai Steinbeck Now I have heard that they run Photoshop considerably better than Windows, and that is all good and well... but, I also hear that the SL Mac client sucks, which defeats the purpose of me running Photoshop on one.
It's actually the other way around. On intel mac SL client seems fine. The problem is Adobe Photoshop. Actually ALL Adobe products don't run natively on an intel mac, and have to be emulated (Rosetta). Their performance is comparable and often slower than on the old G4 machines. This means performance on any hardware comparable Windows PC (including Boot Camp) is much, much better. Maybe one of the reasons people need Boot Camp is to be able to work with usually essential software for a lot of mac users on a decent speed? From: Dianne Mechanique That's just games though. Adults use computers too, and they have different needs.
Yeah, like decent natively running versions of non-applebrand productivity software, like Adobe InDesign/PhotoShop or Microsoft Word etc.

Aw man, is this gonna be one of those "My Mac/PC can beat your PC/Mac" fights??? Geesh!!
Does the computer work? Does it do what you need it to? If yes, then all is good.
No OS is perfect nor the hardware. And I notice it's not the OS that sucks- it's usually the user. Going cheap on an OS is bad. Dont buy the "home" version, always go for the "pro" version. Not sure what Vista will call it. There's to be several versions.
So far I have PC's running Windows XP Pro, WIndows 2000, XP Home on the laptop, and an old AMD K6-2 running Redhat Linux. Next I plan on picking up an old G3 or G4. Why? Just because these things are fun! I like to learn every detail possible. Computers are NEAT!!!

From: Aaron Levy What's most curious about Mac's latest jump in popularity and outlook is that Apple had to achieve these by embracing the TWO things all Mac users' hatred were united in -- Intel & Windows.
Is Apple really being "innovative" if they are simply embracing what the rest of the computer industry has been doing since the 80s? They aren't pioneering new ground here, it's the old OS running on new hardware -- new hardware that Apple swore was inferior to their own.
But they've 180'd on both of those. "Hey, we're going to use Intels now, and oh, yeah, here's Windows for you, too. Now PLEASE buy our hardware so we can get out of the 2-3% market!?" What market share does Dell have? Or Gateway? In the computer business, 2-3 percent is pretty damn good. The innovation in software is being able to run more than one operating system easily. The innovation in the hardware is using the dual core intel processors. Despite your claims, dual core processors haven't been around since the '80's, and OSX is anything but the "old OS." Of course, though, you are making the same mistake so many Apple critics make, comparing Apple to Microsoft and not comparing Apple to its real competitors, Dell, Gateway and the rest. Apple is a computer company. One of the features of an Apple computer is its unique operating system. Microsoft is an operating systems company. I never hear anybody saying that there are more Apple computers in use today than Microsoft computers. There are. Because Microsoft isn't a computer company, just like Apple isn't an operating systems company.

From: Tod69 Talamasca Does the computer work? Does it do what you need it to? If yes, then all is good. I'm a system and network administrator. To me, all those Windows boxes out there in the world are like camping chairs. Because the way Microsoft integrated the browser with the desktop in the '90s has become an unending source of wasted time. Because it's not actually possible to secure a Windows box to the level that is normal on any UNIX system, including Mac OS X, without making some of your applications break. If there was any justice in the world, Bill Gates would be sending me a check for like half a million bucks by now, just to compensate me for lost time, pain, suffering, and late night pizza and cokes.

And I don't see how age comes into this. At 30 years old, I'm pretty sure I qualify as an Adult, yet I don't see why I need to give up gaming in order for my opinion to carry weight. And really, I have *YET* to see a professional office running on any form of *nix *desktops.*

10$ says that Apple, like what they did with PowerPC in the mid 1990's (they allowed third parties to build hardware to run Mac), will turn an about face just to irk thier consumer base. It's just a marketing ploy to rejuvinate the brand.
