Just to make it OFFICIAL, Lusk is 50m to the east.

I just wanted to make sure there was an 'official' report on this, as everything I've heard has been anecdotal. The Lusk simulator has all of its land shifted 50 meters to the east. There is currently a mountain burying our store, and our main building area is underground, as well. We also have been holding off on any building or changes since Friday, as we know that there is a possibility that these changes may be lost in the case of a server restore. So, the Luskwood group is pretty much disabled for the time being, as we can't do any sales or builds or events while the server is in this state. This occurred around 8pm (8:20?) PST on Friday night, when the sim went down, and came back up in this state. Just want to make sure (or find out if) we're going to have to simply adapt to these new and sudden terrain changes? - But also, just wanted to file and post the issue officially, since many Lindens weren't aware of the problem in-game when I spoke to them, and until I showed them. From what I understand it is being worked on, so, for those who already know, disregard this message. For those who don't know, come take a look. It's pretty funky.

Speaking as one of those affected by the terrain shift... For the record, judging by the observed effects on the terrain impacted, I'm voicing my OPINION that this isn't simply a "50m to the east" shift, regardless of the Linden party line. It looks more deliberate (and more complicated) than that - for instance I have a canal running thru a portion of the mountain I used to have. If true, the terrain moved would be intact and easily identifiable in its new location. It seems as though only some of the terrrain was affected - though to be honest I cannot distinguish a pattern. Because of this, I initially thought it to be a result of griefers and a permissions bug. Perhaps some of the affected terrain had been subsequently terraformed before I saw it. In any case, the weirdness did happen after Friday's sim crash, so for the time being I'm willing to accept that this is a merely a crash-related event and wait for the correction. Hopefully soon. Come by and see for yourselves. We can use the dwell . Free gift for anyone who comes dressed as Ava Gardner or Geneviève Bujold. =Sinclair

The sim crashed hard around 20:32 Friday night and came back up out of whack because the memory pointer that had been keeping track of the beginning of the heightfield array had been decremented, by about 44 and so the terrain saved to file (44 - 2*boundary) meters to the East. Its impossible to tell exactly how or why it crashed because the stack was corrupted (major memory overwrite). If any of the stack is valid then it appears to have died deep in the Havok library calls, which means it might have gone into such a deep think that the server ran out of memory before the watchdog bounced it. This is one of those rare unreproducible bugs that give us developers nightmares. Cory has a pins near his desk that says: From: someone LISP is like a finely choreographed ballet.
ADA is like a waltz of drugged elephants.
C is like a sword-dance on a freshly waxed floor. The recent shift in Lusk was caused by the sword dance wandering off into one of the less practiced variations. One of the dancers probably fell off of the stage, lost his blade, which flew up in the air and struck the janitor who had walked in to mop up the mess. In any case, I fixed it. Let me know if there are any problems. Also, this is one of those things that is harder to fix the longer it sits broken. If you notice that the terrain has shifted then feel free to send me an email at: andrew@lindenlab.com

If you notice that the terrain has shifted then feel free to send me an email at: andrew@lindenlab.com Okay - Andrew, just for the record, we did notify staff *immediately* after it occurred, and were told that the message would get to you (Specifically via voicemail, I believe) ASAP. However, I know this weekend was less than simple for Linden Lab, so I can see how things might have become jumbled. I generally try to keep the bug reports through official channels, but as the Lusk sim seems to be prone to a bit of serverside funnybusiness, I'll certainly send you a direct email if such shennanigans of a similar magnitude or nature pop up again. As for the code: Most of the residents of Lusk are C++ coders ourselves. So, "we feel for you", or I believe it goes in California, "I'm picking up what you're laying down." Thanks for the repairs; they don't go unappreciated - and I think we all feel that way. We see the work that LL puts in on these issues. So I want to make sure it didn't look like we had an actual problem with the resolution taking the time it did. I just wanted to document what happened, because at that point, the terrain was still out of whack and I wasn't sure it had gotten to the right people or gone through the right channels. No real upset involved, as we actually managed to have a record (dwell) setting event in makeshift conditions even while the corruption was present. Or, maybe it was the folks to the east who actually did that. Hmm.

darnit.. left all my cd's at work today and haven't gotten around to reinstalling photoshop yet to edit up some of my pics of it....
it was pretty surreal... given we built in the shadow of a huge ridge... once it jumped up onto our stuff it ended up lookin like nothing so much as a Second Life version of pompeii x.x
i'll post piccies of it tomorrow... i promise! ^.^

If Luskwood won't come to the mountain, the mountain will come to Luskwood. Or something.

I have to apologize for what happened. Being the Angel of Death and all (Sodom and Gommorah, Pompei, First Born in Egypt was some of my best work), I was rehearsing for my next gig in L.A. I thought I put everything back the way it was, guess I missed a few spots.

I think Java would be a line dance of blind epileptic monkeys.
Michi, yes the official channels are the best way to go for most problems, however there are a few varieties of problems that can be hard to fix if left unresolved for too long. Major content-loss is one example that needs rapid attention, since the longer it waits the more the current state of the sim will differ from the backup state, which makes things difficult to roll back, for fear of losing content that has been added since the problem.
In the case of the shifted terrain, I was bummed to hear about it so late because I figured it was possible that someone may have tried to use the terrain editing tools to "correct" their land on the sim, and then maybe started building on the new form ==> when the rest of the terrain was repaired their content would then be out of whack.
Luckily, in this case no one had sold any land, and when I rolled the terrain back and looked around everything looked ok.
It appears that the official channels broke somewhere since the official "grid monkey" (not me last week) didn't hear about the problem. So it didn't get fixed until Dan Linden mentioned it to me on Monday morning. I'll look into where the channels broke and see what can be done about fixing them.
Fixing it will involve educating the people in the loop how to escalate the report to the right people and to make sure the right people actually receive the message.
Part of that process is educating you (the people who use Second Life) on how to escalate the report. Therefore, I'm announcing that in cases of terrain shift and major content-loss, especially ones that have not been handled in a timely manner, direct email to me (andrew@lindenlab.com) IS an official channel.
"Timely" here is related to the expected time-scale of a response to email. If it is a problem on late Friday night, I might not actually read the email until Saturday afternoon; if it has not been resolved in several hours, then an email in my direction is probably a good idea, but it may be several hours more before it reaches me.

Oh yeah... and posting to the forums is indeed an official channel. I always try to look over the "Technical Issues" forum once a day to get an idea of the current problems.

... and where does LSL fit into this code analogy?
04-28-2004 01:39
All i can think of is that "LSL is like a popcorn popper without a lid", (especially when Debug->Show Updates is enabled. So, about that request for a llWriteScriptLine() function... *shudder* =)
