It seems mostly that secondlife has so many peole's attention over othr games because of its' customizability. Sure, it may be laggy and slow, but look at all of its' possiblities no other game has. With the ability to create your own content, upload your own textures, sounds, anything really, it is just too hard to compete with. While I do agree linden labs lacks the common sense to fix their bugs before laying a new line of bricks so to speak, they will undoubtably stay up on the charts.

As evidenced by the fact that SL is still lumbering on a year and a half after this thread was started. |

Entropia Universe integrating CryEngine 2
10-26-2008 04:42
Google this and you will see the developments and integration of CryEngine2 into the 'other' long running real life currency world Entropia Universe ( formerly Project Entropia)
This virtual world also founded in 2003 ( soon virtual multi world universe) has grown way beyond SL though entirely different in purpose and lacking in SL's creative system, this immersive persistent world has undergone startling improvements in visuality, landscape, and design recently and soon will make monumental leaps with the above engine. Many of the features and quality there with everything from armor, weapons, sky, water, trees, terrain and materials will make even the improved SL look like 'Lego Land' soon.. Sadly the clothes are still awful though... and if you think SL is expensive then EU makes it look cheap to play here, and they also have not improved the avatar itself much but that is coming... unlike SL where we still have not improved the rather sad base body system for the AV itself since 2003 !!! Worth a look though to see how a completely different virtual world has grown... EU has many very rich players... most notably to those of us in SL....a certain Anshe Chung !! |

This virtual world also founded in 2003 ( soon virtual multi world universe) has grown way beyond SL Or is there a way that I could, in Project Entropia, create something comparable (in a Martian setting) to my version of Nausicaa's "Mehve"? If there isn't, then it's not a virtual world in any meaningful sense. _____________________

Erm, correct me if I am wrong but does mainland sims not allow 50-100 avatars per sim? I know for a fact on our private island we can allow up to 100. i asked a linden some time ago, 30 is pushing it on the mainland, and usually stops allowing new connections they did admit 50 IS possible, if theres nothing in the sim, and noone has any attachments and or scripts running ... but even then it would have to be "a damn magical sim" the difference is that a estate gets a rather healthy chunk of cpu power, where as a mainland sim barley gets a thread |

That was on class 3 servers with SL 1.6 and 1.7. With SL 1.8 all of a sudden you could teleport without having to remove all your attachments to be able to reliably arrive intact. Wonderful. With a Class 4 sim, 50 users was actually usable. That was amazing. With a mainland or an estate class 5 (like the Nautilus sims) 40 users should not break a sim. If it does, you have something horrid going on in the sim... bad physical objects or something like that. _____________________

When I started, when you got to 15 people in a sim, you couldn't move, you couldn't cross sim borders, you couldn't even teleport out... you had to relog at home. What SL were you playing? In 2003, October, I went to a Party at Club midnight with 20-30 people in the sim back when Chartreuse was in "The Badlands" and we could all move fine. In 2004, i opend my Galleria City Island & Skywalk Mall sim and routinely had 30-40 people there on events. But also in 2005 you had the birth of Hoochie Hair(tm) and that did grossly affect lag at sims, but back then my face of 500-600 prims slowed everyone down who zoomed in on me. In 2003 we still had Land Rushes and dozens of people would show for that - i know at least 20-30 people showed up for the Olive land rush. Saying one could not move with 15 people on a sim is a gross exaggeration of SL at that time. Heck I remember in 2005, LL holding a fashion show in the center of 4 sims together and more than 100 people showing up. SL was not as bad as you are portraying it in 2005. _____________________

Oh god Snakekiss, if you ever compare SL to Project Craptopia again I am going to have to say I do not know you anymore. ![]() _____________________

I also owned a Club in 2005 called Snow Crash and had no problem packing a sim with more than 30 avatars without having to remove anything.
15 avatar's in a sim causing massive lag like you described was not the norm for 2005. _____________________

Must have been a LONG time ago. no it was within the last 9 months (give or take) Before Class 4 sims, and back when the sims were a lot less efficient. they could call anything a class X, that debate has already been beaten to death Mainland sims and estate sims get the same processor classes as island sims. A class 4 or 5 mainland sim behaves similarly to a class 4 or 5 estate sim. Class 5 is better than class 4, but there are examples of both on the mainland and examples of both on islands. yea and they run atleast 2x as many on the same hardware, thus less cpu cycles When I started, when you got to 15 people in a sim, you couldn't move, you couldn't cross sim borders, you couldn't even teleport out... you had to relog at home. That was on class 3 servers with SL 1.6 and 1.7. With SL 1.8 all of a sudden you could teleport without having to remove all your attachments to be able to reliably arrive intact. Wonderful. im with the other poster, even when i first joined you could do 30 on a sim no problem, and that was version 1.5.8 or 9, goes back to what i was told about attachments and whatnot, at casino joe's it might have been 15 (eventho it was usually 30) , but at a art show is a different situation With a Class 4 sim, 50 users was actually usable. That was amazing. and on magical "class 4" sims ive seen 15 hoochies kill it With a mainland or an estate class 5 (like the Nautilus sims) 40 users should not break a sim. If it does, you have something horrid going on in the sim... bad physical objects or something like that. again estates gets a sim on a cpu core, there might be 3 on 1 mainland core, its the ghetto they are not giving us the same thing as the expensive accounts, this argument has already been proven many times before too |
