When I tried Linux to see what effect it had on my ATI card's SL performance there was no improvement over Windows.

Yes it's VBO excepted, as you can see on the screenshot all the other options are turned on, including the atmospheric shader which doesn't work on Windows. Actually I edited the post since I thought of Vertex afterwards.

the problem i have on ubuntu 9.04 is that it doesnt recognize the media sounds for second life... everything else works fine... and yes it looks better in linux

I couldn't get the viewer to install correctly on my Ubuntu. Some uninformative, cryptic message about not being able to create some application window or some such group of words.

I gave up. My main purpose of having a Linux distro on this machine was to have an alternate OS for fun things like GIMP and Blender (which I'm slowly.....I mean slowly.....learning). Those two programs simply run better on Ubuntu than on Windows.

SL is a lot prettier on Ubuntu I mean A LOT prettier. I just dont like not being able to hear the region music or a DJ's stream through region media.. That really drives me nuts.. but visually its stunningly more attractive. Also the aformentioned 9500GT in other threads we talked about.. supports some ridiculous screen resolution I think 1640 x 1280 or something to that effect and its just wow ... Id say High graphics preferences is superior on Ubuntu than Ultra on Windows XP pro..

And I havent learned GIMP yet.. I am not a computer newbie but Ubuntu does take a lot of technical expertise and TIME... I have what I consider basic technical expertise and NO TIME.. So I can only really play SL browse the internet and chat through IM... it doesnt support my webcam and it doesnt like my microphone or sound output for media or conferencing.. other than that it work perfectly... my problem right now is using WINEHQ to play all the other games I Have.
