Well yes I understand that this has happened many times before at each update and I read the post in linden forum with ' known issues' but what about the fact that:
WE CAN BARELY MOVE
I cant walk str8, pushing a button or opening a window takes 10-15 seconds, chat is so slow i cant even see my words in the box and they appear in the world many seconds later.. flying is impossible u just stay there and then all of a sudden ur many metres away at once.
Working is impossible, designing and creating is impossible, making any money at my store is.. impossible... in fact the game/world is almost unplayable..I have not been able to walk across any of my land even since the update let alone do anything constructive
This is many many MANY times slower than before the update.. and one of the worst I have seen for a while
yes this does happen every time and at least I have other virtual worlds to go to... but none that I am paying $13 US a day to play..I appreciate the work Lindens must be doing to make this right but how come we always go through months and months of preview yet on launch its always a complete mess?
Frustrating as ever.. oh well back to Neocron

why?
10-26-2005 16:23
I do not feel I should have to diminish my settings, an update is supposed to be an improvement in service.
All I can say so far is I have repeatedly tried to be in world tonight, and after an update and two patches I still cant even see anything much apart from a grey fog where my house, store and extensive gardens sim is supposed to be. Nothing shows up except the odd bush or part of it, some ground and sky and the majority of the 10,000 or so objects in my lands are just greyish panels... impossibel to work . I would go into my house but I cant even see the doors and the floors let alone do anything useful.
Have followed all Linden advice, cache etc but in effect the game is now unplayable for me.
I would like to know how long we are expected ti stay this waY
Just what WAS the point of all the preview testing when faults this fundamental were not spotted and not apparent until the version is actually deployed. Surely with a paying audience and many of us running virtual businesses here, these new versions should be TESTED before being deployed. The entire game is almost so slow as to be unworkable and almost all the textures dont show. That's a pretty serious deficit. Fot a visual universe, wonrdering about in 65,000 virtual metres of formless greyness with nothing to do isnt much of an advert or much of a value for our subscriptions. I think it would be best if these things were KNOWN to work BEFORE being released. We were better off BEFORE.
It makes me wonder why we bother doing the preview work.

Yah, I kind of agree. While I never take position and understand the situation usually, now it's been quite a long time and I see *no* improvement... if only there was a little, I'd put a smile on my face. But each time I wear something new, I have to relog to see its texture, each time I click on profiles or in the find buttons, it won't come out, I have to lick 29861273 times, and just as Snakekiss said, *no* I *won't* give up on local lightning and shiny! I mean, why would i? It's not normal having to reduce options (and fun uh!) just to be able to run the game. Anyways, it won't change anything but I felt like replying anyways. I logged off, no fun.

im short of giving up on SL after this update... I have a pretty good machine, which ran near flawless , despite having an ATI card in the 1.6 series..... now i cant even go to Island sandbox to get good frames per second. Im averaging 4-5fps.. when i used to average 40-50fps...... this is a 10 Fold decrease in performance.
I agree with Snakesis, an update is "SUPPOSED" to be an improvment......... ill give it a couple of weeks , if things dont improve there is no way i could continue building and running a business in SL at 5fps... just not possible.

Why dont you give them the chance to correct there problems before you start judging everything.
Theyve admitted its broke, theyre trying to fix it. Is it so hard to give them a week and see how things turn out?
I admit they may not fix it, i seriously hope they do, but at least give them a chance, im sure there as stressed as we are, if not more.

they have a testing grid for a reason.
you test it, then release it when it works.
its as simple as that.
My logic is better than ur logic.

I'm hoping this is like pregnancy. Like, the part where the baby is almost all the way out, and it's excruciating pain... but seeing the baby cry in your arms and holding her tight will make all the suffering worth it.

To be honest if this was a free service, which for alot it is, i wouldn't be feeling that i had the right to whine and complain, i'd wait patiently for fixes and patches etc. However, i've paid a years subscription, i pay rather a large chunk of change a month for land tier and frankly i'd expect a little better from something that was supposed to roll out improvements - especially as i just received my credit card notification that my account has been charge for the next month LOL.
I appreciate it's being worked on, I appreciate it takes time, but i'd really like to be able to walk, play a game or two and look like i'm wearing clothing.

The worst update for ages
10-27-2005 13:33
Ok how many days now?
I still cant see most of the textures around my sims after several days one update and two patches later
If i try to move or fly nothing happens for about 10 secs then suddenly im half a sim away in one jump
I am getting 0.8 FPS on the CRTL SHIFT 1 monitor panel
I cannot walk, text typed doesnt show until its all done then takes maybe 3-5 seconds to show, I cant create, work, travel, hear any sounds except verrrry slow and partial and I cannot make any money or do anything worth loggin on for
Here are some shots of Tehama I have been on and off constant crashing for 2.5 hours now and not managed to even see the textures around me or get to walk across my sim
This is absolutely terrible, unplayable !

update 1.7.2
10-28-2005 10:51
No better at all, still cannot walk, fly, see most textures or do anything of value, crashing several times in an hour and frankly just wasting my time as the world is right now
cannot perform any functions without severe delay and the world is a grey fog of unrezzed panels without any hope to work or chat or travel.
The latest patch has made nil difference to me
Laughable this is what I get in my email about the latest SL magazine
After much anticipation, a new Second Life is here, featuring optimized frame rate and graphics (gamers rejoice!), an upgraded dynamic map lush with detail, and a function that lets you publish your SL profile directly to the Web, to let the outside world know who you are in here. Log in to automatically update your viewer, and find a more intuitive, more powerful interface, with new tools for creating an even better Second Life for yourself. ...( DOES THE PERSON WHO WROTE THIS HAVE ANY IDEA WHATS GOING ON?)
Which version is this they are talking about.. not the one I am struggling with thats for sure?

I have noticed these problems as well. I have been doing some research on the issue on a local machine vs client issue. Here is what I have discovered in testing scenarios: 1. Common thread seems to be: Windows XP, Intel CPU and nVidia AGP vid cards 2. Testing to verify: Main PC for Sl: Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 768MB DDR RAM, nVidia Geforce 4000 128MB DDR, ASUS mainboard, ata 133 HDD and WIN XP pro. Used integrated Soundmax audio and Broadcom NIC then disabled and threw in 3COM 3C905B-TX NIC, SB Live sound card to see if it was a perhiperal, but alas, no dice. Laggy as all get out, only settings on are shiny with draw distance down to 64, fog/particle rendering off. Performance indicators show low network, memory and page file use. CPU is 90 - 99% throttled when SL is active task - not a good thing to have cpu maxed to the hilt on one app as it does not allow many resources for drivers and other system services to run, not to mention the thermal build up. I have even selected compatability mode for the SL application to Windows 2000, no dice. Second test that points to common thread: Other system used to test with: AMD Athlon 1.4GHz, 512MB SDRAM, same nVidia vid card, MSI K7T Pro Limited Edition mainboard, ata 100HDD and WIN XP pro, 3COM 3C905B-TX NIC, SB Live sound card. laggy but a lot less! I actually have shiny and local lighting turned on and it is more playable than my P4 box is, not as much lag or CPU throttling! I even uninstalled XP SP1 to try and remove the possibilities of random SP junkiness, no diff there either. Other evidence: All residents I have talked to that have the lag are running close to the same setup and their CPU throttle is at max when SL is active window. The residents not having problems are using multi processor or Dual core CPUS with PCI Express video or ATI vids or AMD procs. More testing I am going to perform tonight to probe more into the connection of XP, Intel and nVidia: Install a diff hdd in my system and throw Win 2k onto it and all latest updates and drivers and see how that works. Other possible test is to take the AMD box and do the same to it and try to compare lag and system resource useage. I will post my findings here, perhaps a few things to help out at all. I have also discovered, bring up the debug menu, goto rendering and check the Use VBO option, lagg dropped a tad doing that ( I dunno what the option does but I am not afraid to experiment on my machine to solve issues ). I have played with the bandwith settings, all the way down throgh the range to the top, no dent on the issue. Also to point out, nVidia released a new version of the GeForce driver on the 20th, may want to get that, it may help some users out. Edit: I wanted to add that the CPU throttling to max hilt is even while I am standing still, staring at the back wall in my office building, no IM's, No chat, no rummaging in my inventory, no map, no mini-map, not even moving the mouse, SIM is empty and it is about 1 AM EST, 10 PM SLT. What is the SL clent doing that it needs to consume that much CPU power when the active agent (me) is not engaged in anything at all? There are no textures to cache/render as they have already been framed to the video card, there are no physics events to calculate as I am standing still with no physics objects moving on their own (A.I.), no audio files to decode and no local lighting rays to calculate as the local lighting is off. This peak does not even drop after 10 mins of just standing there. Funny thing is, I can fire up Gimp and Firefox and they run supah fast since when SL is not the foreground task, the CPU use drops to about 50% and below and the other tasks can operate ok. As soon as Sl becomes the active foreground task, CPU use jumps back to 100%.

I have done a bit more digging. This may help those running multi processors, Dual Cores or CPUs with Hyper threading *** Please note, try at your own risk, I will be doing prelimiary testing when I arrive home this evening to try and dicern other possibilities*** I have learned that the above conditions can cause dead-lock in many applications that are CPU thread intensive including games. This does not seem to be an issue exclusive with the SL client per say, more or less an O/S or hardware issue as to how the O/S handles thread execution and tasking. Here is something to try out: go to the start button, then run. type in- notepad c:\boot.ini press ok Notepad will open up with something along the lines of this : [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect update this line: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect add /numproc=1 it will look like: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /numproc=1 click on file -->save then click on file -->exit This tells Windows to use only one processor or one of the virtual procs in an HT/DC CPU. In effect, it turns the other one off and ignores it in thread execution/redirecting. reboot and try SL again. I repeat, this appears to happen with a lot of thread intensive applications and is not inherent to SL. While it may be possible that new updates to the SL client to add function also added new threads to be executed. Looks like the OS/Hardware is not handling threads properly and creating identical threads in the 2 diff procs which cause a dead-lock condition in thread execution that the system needs to cycle out and compensate for, therefore causing lag and massive slow downs. I am still digging for more info in non-HT Intel CPUs and the lag. If you do not have administrative access to your PC due to how it was setup, you may need to contact tech support to have them get you access. Most home PC's default to the first configed user as an admin during the final factory setup the first time the computer was turned on (I know Dell does it) I hope this info helps someone out Edited to add: This seems to be part of the XP,Intel,nVidia link as HT(Intel part) is pretty much only available in Windows XP(XP part) based off of multiple tech sites and resources including Microsoft and Intel.

Performed other testing tonight: Verified correct detect of my Intel P4 chip, all detected ok. Threw in a diff hard drive and installed Windows 2000 Pro, Updates to SP4 and Direct x 9. Latest mainboard drivers, sound drivers, nic drivers and nVidia drivers. Interesting thing, SL ran slower, I couldn't type worth a darned (took multiple seconds before the words would appear in the chat line and couldn't backspace faster than a snail.) Settings were turned down and local lighting/shiny was turned off. Yet the machine refused to run any faster. Walking was like walking through frozen molasses on a cold winter day.... Plopped my XP drive back in and SL ran faster with Shiny turned on. Still like walking through water but it is more tolerable than the fresh 2k install. CPU throttel was at 100% on the 2k box but it never dropped when SL was a background task like it does on XP. Back to square one in my personal investigation, no loss though because I live for this stuff Like the proverbial dog with a bone, I can't let this stuff go even if my machine blows up and pukes the CPU out through the floppy drive and I re-invent the wheel in the process. Another interesting Item, the slowness and water walk comes in waves, it hits, receeds a bit then comes again....
