I have recently installed windows seven onto my laptop, and installed the latest version of second life. I now have a problem uploading my scripts. Whenever a try to save a script, it complies successfully but i get a message saying, "Unable to upload asset". This happens for any script in any object, even very very simple scripts. However, when i go into university and use the wireless network, i am able to upload my scripts with no problems. This as left me very confused and frustrated. Does anyone have a solution, if there is one.

/me bets the Win7 firewall is enabled.
If you have a router with a firewall, it's probably safe to disable the Win7 firewall. If you don't have a router with a firewall.. er.. I think you want to go here to figure out which outbound ports should be allowed: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Firewall/. That or, if you can, tell is that SL is a 'safe' application. _____________________

Hi, thanks for the reply, i thought it could be this as well, but as it will allow to upload scripts on the wireless network in the university i wasn't sure.
I added second life to the list to allow it through the windows firewall, but this had no affect. I then turned off windows firewall, and this still had no affect. I then turned of my bullguard firewall as well and this had no effect either, so it still comes up with the same annoying message. |

Dunno.. It still sounds like a firewall issue to me..
Ask around. Do people see you as all gray? If they don't then you're able to at least upload your baked textures - that'd point less to it being a firewall issue. _____________________

Thanks for the link, i have just tried this, however i didn't work. And again when both firewalls are turned off, i still get the message telling me "unable to upload asset". This can not get any more annoying and frustrating. Any other possible solutions.
I have also tried un-installing second life and then installing it, and this did not solve my problem. |

You're running two firewalls? I'm assuming one is a hardware firewall built into your router or something. Two software firewalls, such as Zonealarm and Windows Firewall will likely conflict with each other.........you should disable or uninstall one. You can run multiple spy/malware programs such as Windows Defender, Ad Aware, Spy Blaster, etc without any problems but you cannot run more than one firewall or one antivirus without issues.

my problem has returned. When i tried this morning it worked fine, and when i was in at uni at worked fine as well. I have just went on second life, and the problem has returned. I am only using one firewall now as well, but it worked fine using two firewalls when i had vista. Anyway, it didn't work when i had the firewalls turned off, therefore i don't think it is an issue with the firewall.

I am now thinking that the problem i have is network related, but i have no idea how to solve it. it appears to work early on in the morning but then doesn't work in the afternoon and onwards.

I'm inclined to think it is network related too...........actually, most symptoms point in that direction. My brain is a little fuzzy yet this morning (not enough caffiene) but you stated this a laptop that you can access SL both on your home network and your school network? That brings a question I just thought of a few minutes ago........the natural assumption is that you are a student. When you say you have no problems at the "University" network but have it at your "home" network, do you mean your real home is a network not connected to the University or is home a dormatory on the campus? If your home is a dormatory a couple things could be playing against you. The network may be setup to block programs like SL (programs that exchange huge amounts of data). Or that network could designed to handle fewer concurrent logins and still maintain the bandwidth......in other words the more logins the less bandwidth allocated to each computer connected at that time. It also would most likely be a wireless network which is subject to outside interferrence......maybe some other student fires up their wireless game console with a hacked remote gaming pad. Who knows. You might speak to the administrator to see if that's the case.
If it's a network that is unrelated to the university that you actually have control over then my question is.......is it a wireless network too? It's a little unclear to me. If it is have you tried hard wiring instead? And is your router locked down to prevent anyone else from "piggybacking" on your network? It's possible (in fact, it happens quite often) that someone near you is acessing the internet through your router. That might explain the morning/afternoon issue. Just a couple thoughts that I had. Geeze......typo city this morning. ![]() |

You are correct in thinking that i live on campus in dorms. it is hard wiring and not wireless. There are a couple of things that are confusing me. Second life ran fine and my scripts would upload with out any problems when i had vista, but since i installed windows 7 last weekend it hasn't worked. The second thing is that other people that live in the same block as me, who have also installed windows 7 and are doing the same course as me and so are using second life, it is running fine for them.
I have been told that my best option is to submit a bug report to linden labs, but i'm not to sure. |

I don't think Linden Lab is going to be able to help you. The evidence points directly at something other than SL (most likely your computer set up or network). I don't run Windows 7 so I have nothing constructive to offer except somewhere in your settings something is different than your friends in your dorm. Maybe you can sit down with one who does not have the problem and is running Win7 (and SL) and compare......things like firewall, antivirus, network settings, user account control, background programs running, security settings, etc.. It could also be your network interface card driver.
All I know is that Windows 7 runs with SL for the vast majority of people. The people who seem to have the most problems are running Win 7 32 bit or are using drivers not optimised for 64 bit. Wish I had more to offer. |
