Or at least unstick it.

/me upgraded to a multi-core cpu yesterday and SL seems quite happy with it. Just dropped it in and everything worked.

This impacts older smp systems as well
05-11-2007 16:46
All,

I just joined SL and was alarmed at how slow the SL system was. 5 fps; 25% - 50% packet loss. This seemed a little odd given my pc is an older dual amd 2.4ghz, 4gb memory, ATI 9600 agp 4x with a 64 bit/66mhz nic. I was going to give up until i found this thread. A quick set affinity and volia! my problems dissolved. Now my packet loss and fps are both in a ore aceptable range of 10% "packet loss" and 15 - 20 fps, 10 -12 in busy areas.

I used the program as documented at:

Thanks allot!!

Even when it was the 1.15 viewer, I still found that setting affinity to single (or single and then back to dual cores) gave a smoother frame rate.

But now on 1.16, I can't really notice any difference. FINALLY some decent dual core support :)

Hello, going to try this, specially since using the Latest 1.6.0 (6XXX) Firstlook Winviewer. Was just checking on something while in SL with SAM Skype Cowan Americas Jet Audio and SL open at the same time, and omg it was using 100% of my AMD AM2 64 X 2 5200+, and as I closed SL it went from 100% of both Processors down to 6 and 7% with just the last of things running and no SL. My gosh!! This is insanity!!! Not even Firefox which SL is based on, the Gecko Graphics Rendering Engine as Firefox uses. Firefox the BonEcho version I use does not even go that high. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5pre) Gecko/20070602 BonEcho/2.0.0.5pre ID:2007060205, so how can this be!!!! I think it might be Bad Codeing!!

Other Symptoms - Jerky Movement / High Ping
06-09-2007 11:56
Last week, I got a dual core AMD 64X2. My framerates were awsome. But my Avatar began to jerk/shake/wiggle back and forth ... Imagine your AV after drinking 3 pots of coffee! Also the ping sim / ping user values in the statistics bar were jumping from <100ms to whacky numbers like 4567890. Don't have positive proof yet, but I did the 'set affinity' work-around, and i havent had any probs for about an hour now. Wish me luck!

This is still relevant and useful information, as evidenced by the recent posts.

I don't care what version of SL I run, I still have to do the single affinity or I have all the problems originally noted.

Please leave this thread as its hard enough to find help these days anyways, and it's not like it's hurting anything being stickied. It also prevents multiple threads.

I'm happy for those with no problems on dual core and not needing this thread, however some of us still do.

Here are my specs - as you see, SL can't determine the CPU type and never has since day 1.

Specs
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4 630, 3066 MHz (15 x 204)
Motherboard Name Abit AL8(-V) (2 PCI, 3 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Lakeport i945P
System Memory 2048 MB (DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM)
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT (512 MB)

Specs as seen by SL
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (3065 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 7950 GT/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.0.3

well honestly i havent had a problem with it. I've noticed slow downs from time to time but they havent been crippeling.

I have a few games which the slowdown is extreamly evident and I use a program called ROPE.exe (run on processor exclusively) which is a startup affinity application similar to the ones in the initial post. its small and it has its own user guide (pdf) to walk people threw the process.

I've found that this is very useful in not only games but in my other programs, I use Maya and unless i'm doing some rendering tasks it runs a bit smoother on a single core.

Those unknown cpu are just not supported by cpu and need to be updated buy the mother board drivers to solve that issue.

ANd not really this thread is outdated and really does not suit its starting purpose as it once did. Newer and faster CPU(s) makes it that way.

Actually "unknown cpu" is what most dual cores show up as.
And my bios is up to date.

exactly sl actually gets its cpu info from a file in the SL directory, and im pretty shure it gets its detection from the make and model from windows, which isnt much better

mine showed up as a x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 1 inside of windows for a cupple years

I am glad you are not having any issues. Your "input" is not useful to those of us that are.

My mother always said to me "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything." I haven't always followed it but it's pretty good advice. Regardless of the morality of flaming, it's unconditionaly against the forum forum guidelines. Please don't flame, I don't like paperwork.

Update: Latest viewer no change though I suppose it's a bit early in the version to judge.
CPU still unrecognized and fps only corrects when using affinity switch methodology

I have found this thread informative, and I will continue to do so in silence henceforth.

This thread should be either updated to explain how new Dual or multi cores DON`T have to be turned off. Or just close it all together. Since First look releases there is nolonger a need to turn off any cores.

How does this affect the quad core I'm thinking of getting?

I am getting Quad core soon myself. But I highly doubt turning off cores will result in higher fps and stable issues. As long as the computer is buildt for gaming and nothing else. turning off cores should not having any real meaning here. As someone said in a related thread like this. Make sure your system is clean from virus and your anti virus programs are not causing conflicts.

I think it is just odd that this has not been fixed yet it's problem that has been out there a wile now. I know it is not a small task to update such a large thing like SL but SL indirectly destroyed my BIOS by hanging on my brand new Ailenwhere computer I had to wipe it clean and still can't get it back to normal. So I'm stuck on my laptop.

Thank you for all the info but it still could not save my new computer.\

the hanging made me have to shut down my PC by unplugging it.

It kind of makes me sad.
that a fix has never been shown to come out for it.

Any and all advice is more then welcome

thank you for all the info any way
