Ahhh, well, see, my laptop happens to be a new laptop purchased in May this year.

Anyhow, I was only trying to help people here, sorry for even trying. The simple matter is, it is no hardship pulling some ram out to see it it solves the issue. I still have not crashed since doing this.

this could be somewhat true, but only if the ram is bad, having too much isnt going to fk up your sytem, its just not going to

A) accept it
B) allocate it

nothing more

From: Temper Nightfire

For the record, I am a professional computer repairer, but will bow to your superior knowledge of course. I visit some 20 to 30 people a week, resolving their issues, whether hardware or software,

i hate it when people pout their break fix experience as something astonishing, ive been doing it since i was 16, im 29 now and still doing it on the enterprise level

to become a "professional" i had to get some shop time in, dealing with grandmothers who couldnt connect to AOL, take a 1 week class with housewives and shopkeeps (i didnt have to but i got a break on my unix administration certification classes if i did, 1 week or 1 grand you decide) and take a test that i burned tru in 20 min and scored 97% to become A+ certified

point is its not a major feat, dont get snotty about it

From: Temper Nightfire

The reason I said 2gb, is that all devices have to be allocated addresses etc. This includes any memory on the graphics card, the various caches etc. Vista 32 bit has a maximum "stable" memory of 3.12gb. This can be verified by reading Microsofts own document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605.

but if you bothered to read the video card is independent of the system, therefore null, it just has to allocate a little bit to know where the video card is in ram, once it hits the video card its in its own little world

From: Temper Nightfire

As mentioned by another poster, it is somewhat down to design. But, being as most people will not be aware of the "design" it is worth noting the paragraph from the above document,

"If a computer has many installed devices, the available memory may be reduced to 3 GB or less. However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB."

yea but its design of pre "super" socket 7 machines, and only in theory, my mainboard was made in 2004, i bought it in early 05, its not a uber special game board or anything, its (at the time) a good via chipset amd based board, and it was only like 79$ (and thank god i started a new job, after bills THIS will be corrected)

So my comments were, and still are sound. If you are having these unexplained crashes in SL, try reducing to 2gb ram. There is no noticeable performance hit between 2gb and 4gb of ram for most people.

your comments are barley valid, in the off chance there is a bad bank of ram in the sea, it might have worked for you because of that exact reason, but i honestly cannot tell someone to gimp the hardware they already own, and is most likley proven good because joe break-fix comes up with a 1 time half assed quickie

From: Temper Nightfire

Finally, just because you have not heard of something, does not mean it does not exist. Maybe you should make your comments in a little less argumentative way? I am done here, just wanted to share what IS a problem for others, in the hope they would resolve the issue as I have. If you want further evidence of the Microsoft memory issues, including from Microsoft itself, go google.

and just becuase it worked once on a single particular machine does not mean its the cure all

and i also understand peggys "tone", every 3rd week theres another someone in here claiming the exact oppsite of the last someone

and (trumpets sound) your suggestion did not make a bit of difference

to the op, sorry, please note the post above this one

I tried going to the link but it was dead. I then went and updated all of my mobo drivers. Still just crashing and sending the report. Does anyone know if there is a way to read the crash report? If it has information about what is causing the crash I'd probably be able to fix it myself.

Just fed up with the old guns who flame the new posters as they have only posted a few times. Not getting into this, it was a good natured "suggestion", which in my case, worked. You carry on with others like you, and discourage people who are new to the forums from posting again, certainly it has worked in my case.

I apologise for making such a poor suggestion.

I'm having the exact same problem! My computer is really poor but up until a few days ago it at least ran... Now it doesn't work at all.

EDIT: Ok, so now I've got it up and running, but when I enter the game, all I see is this:

It seems I have a problem with my network - I hope a reboot will help.

Hello All, I'm still not able to connect using the regular SL viewer software. I tried finding other viewers but I haven't been able to. If you can give me some links I'll try another viewer. I have the same problem with the release candidate viewer as with the regular. It doesn't even start up. It tries to start up then just sends a crash report. Any help is very appreciated as I haven't been able to get online here for months it seems.
Thanks

You can find alternate viewers for SL by doing a Google search for

second life alternate viewers

This will produce a link to the Second Life Wiki page on alternate viewers

That SL Wiki page about alternate viewers is at

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers

The two most mentioned alternate viewers are Cool Viewer and the Nicholaz viewers.

Cool Viewer's site is at http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/ .

Nicholaz's site is at http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/

Note that you will need to read, understand and follow some instructions at those sites to use the viewers they offer.

Do you get the login screen to appear or does it crash before it even gets that far?

Exactly what version, including the version number, of SL are you using?

You can find your crash report using the method described in the knowledge base at https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4209

Please don't post your entire crash report here. They don't bother me too much but they are big, confusing, and bother some people enough that they might stop reading the thread, which can't do you any good. Instead, if you want the forum readers to be able to read it, you could go to http://cl1p.net/ and follow their instructions on putting it there and give us the link.

If you haven't worked through the Knowledge Base articles on crashes you might try that.

You can find the knowlege base by doing a Google search for

second life knowledge base

or just go to http://secondlife.com/support/

I do not believe uninstalling SL removed the files from the Application Settings folder, where your cache is kept.

I think in Vista it's in c:\users\[your user name]\appdata\Secondlife\

You'll probably have to tell Vista to display hidden files and folders in whatever Vista calls its view options.

Someone who actually uses Vista might be able to help you more with this.

Back up anything in that Secondlife folder (your chat logs are in there), then delete it. See if that helps.

That'll clean out any corrupt or horrible cache files, preference files or anything else. Simply clearing the cache (if you can get SL to load that far) might do it, too.

I found a utility that works really well in finding all the hidden bits after an uninstallation, Revo Uninstaller

I too was having the same exact problem. I have found a solution. I have to download the new viewer every time I log into SL now. For some reason the download seems to be only temporary so if I try to log in without a new download I will crash at the loading world screen.

This works for me every time now if I will just run a new download every time I log in. It's a pain I know.. but much less painful than going without SL.

Hope this helps.
