I was told by a Linden that whatever you do, if you are running the Mac version in the 1.3 preview, do *not* enable "Fast UI" under the debug menu or you will instantly crash.

I don't own a Mac, but I just thought I'd pass that along. :D

oooOOOooo "Fast UI"?! Does that work in the 1.2 Beta? UI speed sounds like a good thing :-)

I am sooooooo tempted to try it now in 1.3 but I'll be good. It's like a cartoon character and a lever -- they can't help but pull it, even if they know it'll hurt :-D

Thanks, Kex, for the heads up! :-D

my horrible experience with SL on my mac
03-24-2004 12:15
I tried SL a couple days ago, and it SUCKS on my machine!

it's a 15" powerbook G4, 1.25 gig G4, 1 gig of RAM, Airport Extreme, Cisco VPN software, OS 10.3.3, ATI Radeon 9xxx (whatever the 15" AlBooks have right now...)

It made my machine crash HARD. Brings back memories of Windows 95... It seems that it's doing something wrong with the video. Something REALLY wrong

I didn't really get a chance to see what SL was all about, because my experience was so crappy. Good thing there's a free trial.

also, one suggestion: make the right click menus come up with a Control-click, not a command-click, as that is the "proper" way of doing things on a mac.

This isn't beta software, it should still be in alpha!

when 1.3 FINAL comes out, maybe I'll give it a spin then. But it better not do anything that can crash a machine and be called "Final". Hey, at least you guys are taking feedback.

ApplePenguin, did you try messing with the video settings? There are a lot of changes you can make to get SL more stable. It also could have been the simulator you were in. I've experienced a few crashes based on lag lately, but nothing horrendous.

I have a Aluminum 15 PB G4, so our systems should be similar. Try these settings:

Turn off EVERYTHING but bump mapping. Set your video memory to 64 MB. Draw distance 128. Avatar vertex program on (it'll blink a bit but it is faster). AGP off, unless it's unbearably slow. AGP *works* but is buggy, can cause some crashes. The 1.3 preview seems rock solid, tho LL says that the AGP/ATI issue is still there for Mac, they are waiting on a vendor-level fix (Apple and ATI).

Contact me inworld if you need help figuring stuff out. Don't give up on SL just yet!

I'm guessing this is your problem.

As far as I know, the ATI Radeon cards have problems with SL. Lindens are working on the problem with ATI.

Sorry. :(

The Mac branch of the SL client is much more stable with ATI cards.

In fact the first machine I played the Mac client on was a new 12" iBook with an ATI 9200, and it ran flawlessly with few ATI-ish issues.

ApplePenguin, please elaborate more on your experience. I will suggest running SL in windowed mode and not full screen, to start, if you are currently doing so.

Windowed mode has proven to be much more stable in both client versions.
