From: Norseman Eriksen Hi guys,
I just entered your forum to look for a solution to my graphic problem. I had to dump my GeForce card because it shorted my PSU and istead I this time bought a ATI Shappire Radeon HD3650 AGP with 512 MB Problems problems problems....only when I run SL. I can stay online for just a few minutes until it crash my whole computer. The screen goes black, the monitor reports that the VGA signal is out of range, and I have to turn the PC on and off. I have updated the latest drived (AGP hotfix) from the ATI website.
Anyone here actually managed to solve this problem ??? I read that some people did a lot of different updating, different files....is there no easy solution to this problem ???
I might aswell buy a new gard with a NVIDIA chip istead if I dont manage to find a fix. this sounds more like indeed a PSU with to less power. these cards need a lot of power...or are you using any powerconnector adater cables to connected you PSU to your VGA card? sometimes these things are realy rotten and are not manufactured well...as axample the ones i got with my 3850HD were broken..one pin was totaly loose and ddnt connect well so i bought a new 650watts PSU from corsair with the 8 pin connector already on it as standard... I dont have any of these problems like you discribe on my system..i also would adviice you to start a thread about this of its own and to start with some specs about your setup aswell...

Psu

Hi
First...no...I replaced the PSU. I also assumed that the PSU was the problem because I have have frequently problems since I installed the GeForce card. So when it finnaly failed permanently I assumed that that was it....so I got I new PSU installed. The old one was 500 W. The new one is 750 W After installing the nw PSU the machine still failed to start. I unplugged the graphic card and it started. I then plugged the card back in and it failed starting. I then replaced the card with this new ATI which I described earlier. And yes...I have plugged the additional power cable into the card.
However after searching the forum at Sapphire I found a posting saying that reducing the AGP speed from 8x to 4x, using the control centre software included with the card, it would be more stable and only reduce the speed by 2-3 %. I have done this and have not had problems since.
Maybe this could be a hit to other people having problems with their ATI card with AGP socket.
I hope this solved my problem.

END the dissadvantage of ATI Cards vs. NVIDIA Cards when playing SL!
08-31-2008 11:52
Hi Folks, I've been experianced strange behaviour like Textures mismatch, very slow rendering during Texture load and total SL Viewer crash, right after login with a ATI 4850 card, using the latest ATI Driver v8.8. I've opened a JIRA issue, right here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8717Please login to JIRA, and VOTE for this issue, so it will become more & more importand to be fixed ASAP. This is the only way to get rid of this delayed attention of Linden Lab, to support ATI Cards PROPERLY in the SL Viewer! This urgently need to be debugged and fixed by the LL developer team. Hey Guys, since the ATI 4850 Card is so rockin' cheap while it bring's a tremendous boost to your PC, it'll be spread on the market rapidly during the next month. So this has to be paid attention... If you VOTE for it, also WATCH this issue on JIRA, so LL will notice there's a lot Users out there, using a ATI Card and struggling with the SL Viewer (wich is btw the ONLY application/game nowadays, that has such problems with a ATI Card). Thanks for your attention & voting for this, to help a lot of SL Residents, playing SL with a ATI Card, BETTER. Cheers, Dandare

Tekno, what kind of FPS are you getting? I have an HD3850 agp as well, and it runs only OK with SL (about 10-15 FPS with several avatars around) but since this is a beast of a card I expect to get a lot more out of it. I've been playing on medium graphics settings with this framerate, and it doesn't matter what resolution I play at, it's always about the same FPS.
If I even touch the hardware skinning or Vertex Buffer Overrun options, it slows down to a crash.
The rest of my system specs:
Windows XP SP2 Gigabyte mobo K8NSC-939 AMD Athlon 4800+ 2.4gz dual core ATI Radeon Sapphire HD3850 512mb AGP graphics (with Catalyst 8.7 drivers) 3.5gb Ram Western Digital 500gb 7200rpm harddrive
Do you think internet connection would have to do with FPS rate? I don't have the fastest connection, about 4mb DL speed, but things tend to rez pretty quick.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Well i play @ 1920x1020 for sl windowed (1920x1080 desktop) lower settings must improve preformance but i have no real complains...When i tp myself to a very crowded sim i still have high framerats at entree (around 25/30) but when things are loaded and i want to move around its also around 6-11 fps but in most cases im very well able to walk and fly around normaly..almost hehe.. i made some screencaptures check them out..got a lot of specs in them... Later i might also be able to place a movie on how things load for me and how framerates etc. react then...if anyone interested ofcozzz... I also tried increasing the network settings bandwidth from 500 to 1500 kbps but that ddnt change much... oops goto go hope it some worth ill get back later

Hello Tekno, What did you actually do to make the HD3850 AGP work on SL ? I didn't really get the hang of it...maybe its just me I got this HD3850 AGP installed yesterday, removed the drives and any software for my old graphic board and installed the latest AGP driver from the Shappire support site. I have also upgraded my BIOS. However the SL crash right after I enter the world. Sending a crash report. I am using the latest SL release canditate 1.20.15 (92456) Jul 18 2008 I really would like to see this graphic board working....please help me if you can.

Hi Tekno,
Yes I got all those drivers and still I'm stuck. However I got a respond from a Sapphire techican through their support service and he adviced me to install an older Catalyst driver. He mentioned version 8.6 or 8.5 and see if that helped. I did not find that version for AGP (only PCI) so I had to go way back to version 8.4 That Catalyst version is stable for me expect the texture is not correct. My avatar i partly invisible in some situations and so on...
I also read in second life JIRA that ATI will release a new 8.9 version that is supposed to cure the problem. Linden Lab tech. is also working on a update.
The reason for the crash is that the anti alising (AA) in the Catalyst driver is not working very well with the AA in Second Life.
So right now I am running Catalyst ver. 8.4 which so far has not crashed.
You say you are running 8.7....is that for AGP and were did you download it ??
Cheers

Norseman Yes i m using AGP drivers for the 3850HD from Sapphire... Downloaded them from Sapphire... Sorry i see i made a mistake...you should be reading from post 21 in this thread instead of # 23 as i said previous post...better read the whole thread befor asking things that realy are here already.. but oke post #21 From: Tekno Magic FINALY I finaly made a full hour of sl today without crashing Ive been flying again at a sim packed with over 80 avatars and stocked with shops, i could freely rotate evrywhere but wrnt able to walk fast..flying was a lot quicker could zoom in and out with mousescrollwheel without any pauses or crashes seen the best graphics so far all with the recommended settings active What have i done this time... h/w setup still the same installed Os cd: xp pro+SP2 (legal) installed chipsetdrivers and lan for mobo (originals from cd) got to windows update and downloaded .NET and updates mediaplayer 11 and updates IE 7 and its updates and a few more..total of 24 it says This time I left out all the ones called essential and then just only named: update for xp or security update for xp...a total of 84 installed audigy 2ZS (this time only original drivers and software from cd) installed mx518 mouse and G15 keyboard (directly with latest web drivers) installed HD3850 agp This time i first installed the: 1-24-07-2008--Catalyst 8.7 HOTFIX for HD2K/HD3k AGP cards and WinXP 32-bit then 2-22-07-2008--AVIVO Xcode for X1k/HD2k/HD3k/HD4k Series and as last 3-22-07-2008--WDM Driver Catalyst 8.7 Windows XP (32bit and 64bit) 22 july installed secondlife latest... I also have set my screensetting to 1024x768 @85 for desktop.. I have not opened Catalyst control centre ( read about isue opening it cozzin some settings being made) And i left Quicktime out... havent istalled it this time. So im pretty naked so to say lol but oke like this it works so SuezanneC Baskerville you were not so wrong about reverting back afterall But oke i surely could need alot of those lleft over updates i could install so ill be taken it stepp by stepp and try to post most of my experiences here..im very used to 1600x1200 so thats what im first going to test .. First i need some sleep hehe I have made a RAR file with the 3 sapphire drivers specified above. I have put them in 3 folders called 1, 2 and 3. Start with the folder 1 then folder 2 and then number 3. In that order i have istalled them myself even tho number 1 came out as last i installed that one first. So here is the rar: http://rapidshare.com/files/143147713/8.7_agp_drivers_sapphire.rar.htmlYou need winrar to unpack... You could try installing them after you completely removed all Ati related software... If that did not work then maybe you should try just as i did and thats start with a clean fresh new install of windows Xp with SP2 intergrated...( better read my thread first if you planning on doing this) and then use these 8.7 drivers.... EDIT--------------------------------------- I am now using the latest release candidate 1.21 which enabled hardware skinning and Avatar cloths aswell so try that version instead of 1.20 please read whole thread and GOOD LUCK !! ---------------------------------------------

Hello Tekno, I have read the whole tread....I just not understood what you had done so thats why I asked you again....to maybe get a whort version or explain again Its not that I've been lazy...hehe I have been working on this topic for days now and searched through (whole) internet and different forums .... And again...I did not find any other AGP drivers to download other than the 8.8 and 8.4 All other archived drivers I found was for PCI boards. Anyway...thanks for the rar compressed files. I am downloading now and will try it out and let you know how it works. Thanks.
