I'm going to wait a bit. I was about to get back into SL more before the whole Ursula nonsense came up, now I'm not sure if it will be worth it. I'll see what happens when the dust settles. If it turns out I won't be using SL more than the once or twice a week I am now, I won't bother and just get a new machine at the end of the year. Thanks for the answers. very informative.

Other manufacturers I know of are Leadtek, Foxconn, Gigabyte, MSI, and Biostar. I don't know anything about them, though.

I hope that helps. :)

Foxconn is Ok. I've been using one of the motherboards and its done quite well. Not an over-clockers machine tho.

And I also noticed on my job- the inside of Dell laptops? All the parts are made by Foxconn.

Gigabyte & MSI are both decent for video cards & motherboards.

i had a 8400 come standard with my pc , sl was alot better than with the old dell.
i had , recently i treated myself to a new card , a geforce 250glx or somthing € 139 , the bloody thing wouldnt fit in the pci slot unless i dissconected two motherboard connections thus diableing the dvd drive and the hard disc.
so anyway i took it back and they said the ati 4850 was much smaller and as good even though it was another € 20 , so i got that , it fitted snugly in the slot but sl is no better attall than the 8400 geforce , maybe a little more colour , but moveing around is much harder , i'm walking into walls again like with the old dell dinosour . maybe i have it set up wrong , i dont know , it's a right unholy pain in the arse though !

Yeah, the GeForce 200 series cards are all huge. I would imagine they kind of have to be, since they sport the largest GPU ever made.

Historically, ATI and SL don't tend to get along too well, so it's not all that surprising that your 4850 isn't performing all that well for you. It's not that it's a bad card, if you like ATI (I personally don't). It's just that SL has certain requirements which nVidia has done a consistently better job of delivering.

Since form factor is an issue in your PC, I'd suggest you try a low profile nVidia card. You might want to give a single-space 9800 GT a whirl.
