Of course AMD is a dead end . . .
From: Briana Dawson
Her criteria was something that can be upgraded for the next 2-3 years, not being able to run nearly a dozen SL instances on a lesser machine than her $1000-1200 could get her.
If i am not mistaken, that AMD stuff is a dead-end. No upgrade path. End of Line. It is also not faster than comparative Intel Quad CPUs.
At least with an i7 she has the newest flag ship from Intel which will keep her machine upgradeable for the next few years like she wishes.
The 2 fastest computer Systems in the world use AMD . . .

Is AMD a dead end? Doesn't seem to be for the folks at IBM and Cray . . .
I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that for the price, and these folks use a LOT of CPUs, AMD offers twice the bang for the buck . . .
Is the i7 a great chip? Sure! is it worth the money? ($280 for the i7 920) - Debatable.
Can you get a very satisfactory SL experience with a $90 AMD Quad? Absolutely, I do.
Can you get a motherboard that would allow you to start with said $90 Opteron Quad and go up to the $245 Phenom II 955 Deneb? Absolutely!
Is it worth spending $1000 on a gaming machine just to get an i7? Very debatable.
