Hey there,

I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do.. I used to be able to run Second Life just fine and then I go to open it today and it won't even get to the login screen before it just randomly closes.. no explanation, no errors etc.. it just looks like it's about to open and then is like "Nahhh.." and shuts.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing.. did this three times and still no joy. I'm not sure what to do now. Anyone know what the problem might be and how I can fix it? It just doesn't make sense how it worked perfectly and then refuses to. I'm having to use the Second Life Release Candidate Viewer in order to get on SL.. as the main one refuses to work.

Please help.

Many thanks in advance,

Try rolling back your computer to a restore point from a few days ago, before this problem started.

@ Chosen Few: I thought about rolling back to an earlier restore point, but I have had a lot of problems fixed since that point.. and don't want to lose the fixes.

@ Amaterasu Navarathna: I'll post my specs if you know where I can locate them. I am on Vista.

*Things I have tried too: I tried running SL in all different compatibility modes, running as administrator and all various settings etc.. no joy.*

--Since I can run the test viewer, I'm really not sure what is going on.. I used to be able to run the normal client too. This is so frustrating now.. my laptop which has lower specs to this, can run the normal client with no trouble at all.. but I want it to work on this computer again, since it's much better on this machine.

Any advice, ideas would be appreciated.

Or does anyone know where I can download an older viewer to try? I really needed 1.22 for what I want to do.. but, I'm willing to try just about anything now.

Login server is down. Pretty sure I have seen it do this before, nothing you can do really for awhile.

What version of SL are you having the problem with?

You said, "Login server is down for months?" - are you saying you've been unable to use the Release version of SL for months?

Have you changed your video drivers lately?

Do you let Windows do automatic updates?

System specs couldn't hurt.

Many thanks to everyone that offered advice in this thread.

I finally sorted the problem, thank you Karl Baryl for that guide.. it seemed to do the trick. I even sorted my inventory out, it was pain-staking.. but it was worth it. I now only have a few folders rather than 10,000!

I found doing all that, removing Second Life completely.. looking for every single trace of it and even uninstalling the Release Candidate Viewer worked!

So, many, many thanks! If this happens again in the future, I will know what to do.

@ SuezanneC: I was having the problem with the newest client. I was saying that the login server had been down for months because I got confused.. lol. I'm blonde, it happens easily! I hadn't updated my drivers, but I did let Windows do those dreadful automatic updates. I also need to learn how to post my specs for any future problems that should arise.. but thank you for replying, all is sorted now though! Yay! :)

Thanks a lot! If anyone is experiencing similar problems, I can't recommend that guide Karl Baryl directed me to enough. It's so easy to follow, I'm not technical minded at all, but I found that really easy.
