Simple fix for some of you login,crashing, missing items

i have just edited a little to this to help the vista and macintosh users
feel free to edit and improve on it all ya want.

Ok your running the new version of sl viewer , have a bad ass machine .
but you crash every few seconds , can't login , have missing inventory.

so ... you have done the clear cache and not fixin..

then
my fix which has worked and proven..

delete the second life cache directory .
why.. its still got some corruption in it..

to find second life folder in windows ......

In XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Second Life\
The Application Data and AppData folders are hidden, so enable show hidden files and folders in the folder options control panel.

In Vista or it's in:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\

On the Mac, I'm pretty sure it's in Macintosh HD\Users\[username]\Library\Caches\SecondLife\



Steps to do this in XP:...

go to the start button on windows taskbar ... right clik and choose explore
go to tools at top and choose folder options ... check the view hidden files and folders.
.hit ok
now you have a new listing
under your login name you will find ..... application data
open that application data ...expand the +
go down to second life folder .. expand that
now see the cache folder ... delete that
and while your at it delete the browser_profile folder
you have to be logged out of sl to do the delete

( reinstall not necessary sl will recreate the cache folders)
log back in to sl and wait for the folders inventory to fill .
don't go doing stuff .. go listen ot some music at the gaslight maybe.


NOW
******** ..ANOTHER IMPORTANT TIP.. **************************************

look at your ava's my inventory .. is your root folder longer than a full page of 255 items???

IF YOUR ROOT INVENTORY IS MORE THAN 255 FILES OR FOLDERs
YOU WILL CRASH AND LAG . you will not be able to login randomly it will cause your cache to be damaged..

it will be a random crashing and random random issues .

soo
keep all your root folders and files to less than 255 files and/or folders combined

what is the root::??
everything directly under my inventory Count All files and Folders...

+ my inventory
1 clothing
2 food
3 trash
4 etc
5 more stuff
6 even more
8 duh
...
...200 well your on your way to crashin at this point

and lastly you've made sub-folders and moved your inventory into them. try not to put too much in them too . especially the objects folder keep them to the level of around 500 to any subfolder.

some inventory my truly dissappear if its not used for a very long time. these assets are on another slower to access system in sl servers. it may take time if you get the dreaded server error of item not in database. try again later or file a ticket if its worth it to you.

and lastly you'v made subfolders try not to put too much in them too . especially the objects folder keep them to the level of around 500 to any subfolder.

Nice try though, even sounds convincing with use of the number 255, and the subliminal hark back to early windows based file system bugs.

Otherwise I'm sorry to say that this is complete tripe.

Fine the you go ahead and drop 1000 folders and objects into your root and see if you can tp and rezz not to mention the lagg or crashing.

I'v proved this over and over to many folks . that includes overloading any sub folders
when you can't tp and loose inventory then you will see. move the objects or folders and watch your inventory start to fill with the missing items. again proven

as for 255 why not . its a safe bet better than the 1000 i have been seeing folks crashing at.

this works folks try it out ..delete your cache .. move large folders .. break them up some.

I recently lost a fully loaded dance huDd... and just could not believe I would have deleted it... even on accident. I have no idea how I ended up reading this forum thread @4 something in the AM... but I am so glad I did. I followed the listed steps and logged back into sl... when I typed my dance huDdz name.... yay!!! There it was again!!! It had gone missing over 3days ago.

Dance animes are the only things I truly shop for in sl; but I was not excited about the idea of having to spend linden (and the time) it would take to replace the majority of them.

To anyone missing inventory, especially big ticket (linden) items, I would suggest you go through the steps.. atleast once!!!! It can't hurt. You may end up saving yourself alot of worry, frustration, $L ... and may even rediscover some all friends!!! *smilin*

I am running the newest version of sl and have a really great computer but certian items have disappeared from my inventory the person who returned them to me said they should be in my lost and found but its not there what can i do to get my items back. I have tried the method in the beginning of this thread and it did not work. I am running windows vista maybe thats why it didnt work but i ddo not have a file on my computer titled my inventory. If anyone can please help it would be greatly appreciated.
