Bermuda effect - Can't chat across Sim boundaries and other bugs

Tonight we (Bino, Nate007, and I) found that there (was/is) a problem on the Shipley - Hawthorne sim border that an AV on one side can not see the text typed by an AV on the other side. Even if they are right next to each other (but on opposite sides of the sim boundary). This happend in front of my two yacht marina.

I have not tested this elsewhere and have not tested it again with other AVs. But the phenominon is real.

There are other 'strange' happenings in this space on the boundary of the two sims (what I now call the Bermuda effect).

I highly recommend (based upon my experience at this location)that you do not create complex objects that straddle sim boundaries, or move complex objects onto a sim boundary.

Building on this space can cause untold headaches with aligning objects, caused by what I can only assume is a 'fight' by the two sims over which one controls the object's position.

When I moved one of my yachts today across the boundary and then back a couple minutes later (sailing in the bay), I then left the area (and then reloged in) upon return to my marina I find that the yacht is 3/4 missing and nowhere in sight. No money had been put back into my account (as if it had been deleted). So I was missing a yacht and the cash spend to build it. (a nice Linden who will remain nameless, gave me the money to rebuild).

Before expanding my marina (I owned land on both Shipley and Hawthorne) I had the building on one sim (shipley) and the first yacht on the other sim (hawthorne), If I teleported into the shipley side (2 meters from Hawthorne) I could wait 'forever' and my yacht would never rez (unless I crosssed the sim boundary), I could see other objects and land far in the distance in the other sim, but the yacht would be 'invisible'.

So... after all this, which is mostly anecdotal. I am going to put signs up warning people of the Bermuda effect in this area ;) and then look for a new marina location.

I hope that this helps others who may have been tearing out what little hair they have left, to understand what might be happening to them on a sim boundary. Or maybe its just my 'Bermuda triangle'.

Upon further investigation after another re-log in, I looked around but in much wider area of coverage. I found the missing 3/4 of the yacht, a full sim away on the boundary of Shipley and the 'end of the world'. (so I owe a 'good sam' Linden some bucks)

but this does not explain that the yacht was in the correct place (in my marina slip) when I placed it there, but 'busted up' and moved when later I returned to that location. (can you hear the 'do-do-do-do' eerie music playing) ;)

Odd - but I got sucked into the effect as well

I crashed (via blackholes) 9 times last night.

Over 5 of them were just in taking a single step. As long as I stayed in Hawthorn or Shipley I was ok - but as soon as I crossed into other sims - bamph! away I went.

Note that it did the same thing if I teleported. lol first time I've ever blackholed while standing completely still.

told Ben I shouldnt have taken that step.... lol

Yeah, I've been having that problem too, on the 4-corners Arena we're building on the corner of Varney, Stillman, Minna and Natoma. When I log or teleport into this area, I cannot see the other parts of our build until I actually move into the respective sims, although I can see everything far away, and last night, I was having the "black hole" problem as well.

While I'm on this topic, I have a question for anyone that can help me...what's the best way to butt the floor slabs across the sim lines? Is it bad to have a slab straddling a sim line? Or is it best to have each peice go right up to the line itself, touching at the exact line itself.

Better name for it would be the Xavier effect.
I may have contributed to the sim instability just a tad last night. Like at least 9 out of the 9 times the Sim crashed, but no more than that.

Josh and peeps,

Thanks for your patience with the unruly sim barriers.

Check this thread here. Peeps were good enough to point out a workaround for building across sims.
Hope that helps!

Ok cool tip to know.

But what about the chat problem? Has any Linden been able to reproduce the problem of not seeing the text of another AV when your next to each other but in different sims?
