Where is my inventory items saved? Are they on the Second Life server or on my computer? If they are saved on my computer then I'd like to know which folder so that I can make a backup copy if I should have to reinstall Second Life.

The "master copy" of your inventory, the one that really counts, is stored on Linden Lab machines.

A copy of your inventory is stored locally in your Second Life cache.

backing up inventory to hard drive
06-08-2009 17:08
Is there anything that allows us to personally copy or otherwise backup our entire inventory to our hard drive on a regular, recoverable basis in case linden labs machines lose information or the asset servers fail?

Many friends of mine, who depended on linden lab machines to keep accurate copies and to retain all items in their personal inventory, have sadly discovered that there are major chunks of information missing from their "master inventory" - and this on a regular basis; it is ocurring enough to believe that linden labs does not care about an individual inventory or the problems such losses of data/items can create for people, especially if those people are content creators.

This, I think, can be considered a major problem for anyone who wants to have all of their inventory items readily accessible and/or recoverable so they do not need to worry about crashing or losing items, as some of my friends have, because of inventory.

You don't have to back up your inventory. Many don't. The servers do it for you. However, there is no guarantee.

There is a 3rd party product called SecondInventory that will do it for you anyway.

There are other more or less satisfactory tricks, such as giving copies to another avatar.

Hi Jessie, what a savvy question! Just a couple of things to add:

It's a good thing that our inventories are hosted on LL's servers, it means we can log in from any computer anywhere and just carry on.

The local copy is called the 'cache'. If your inventory ever gets severely borked and clearing your cache doesn't fix it (Network tab in Preferences), the best thing to do is simply delete your cache folder and let SL rebuild it from scratch the next time you login.

In XP the folder is (delete the whole thing):
C:\Documents and Settings\<your userid>\Application Data\SecondLife\cache

In Vista the folder is:
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\cache

In a Mac OS:
(your Home folder)/Library/Application Support/SecondLife -> Cache
.

Lee, thanks for the heads up on Second Inventory. It looks very cool. I might give it a whirl.
