Any hope for fixing something /that/ low?
It's fine when I first log in.. and by "fine" I mean high 20's. Then almost instantly it drains down to 1.7-ish.
This started today.. packet loss isn't bad, mostly less than 2%.
Suggestions?

System specs might be useful.
You can get some of it from the Help menu, on the About Second Life dialog. Also you might want to check that your fans are clean and spinning freely. _____________________

SL is a really intensive program because of all the completely random unoptimized user content
your machine is skirting on slow for most games in plain cpu speed, and gpu capability try dropping your in world graphics options to the bare minimums, and go to someplace "heavy" and adjust back up, but keep in mind its not going to run at 100 fps im running on arguably slower hardware, its fast enough when its needed, and if im bogging down hard its usually not a big deal because im there for an event, and mostly focused on communication |

packet loss isn't bad, mostly less than 2%. Er.. That's actually not very good. Are you using wireless? Low FPS isn't usually related to packet loss but you might want to also look at your internet connection... _____________________

less packet loss is better AFAIK
one thing that somtimes helps me to reduce the amount of packets lost is to move the bandwidth throttle on the network tab of the preferences window all the way down and wait for the packet loss to go away and then I move it back up to where I want it _____________________

How Really? I thought the lower the better, for packet loss. Thanks for clearing that up for me. ![]() Yes.. Lower is absolutely better. I think her point was that "mostly under 2%" isn't actually that low - that means about 1 out of every 50 things the sim sends you gets lost and has to be retransmitted.. edit: and wireless is notoriously unfriendly to SL. Try unplugging power from all your network gear for a couple minutes then plugging it back in and seeing if SL is any better. Also trying connecting via a cable if you can to see if that helps. _____________________

How /does/ one get their machine to run at 100 fps? option 1, dump an insane amount of money into a uber rig and watch it go on sale for 199$ 2 years later opion 2, figure out what your current mother board can do, does it have a pci-e 16 x slot (or better), whats the fastest cpu it can hold ect. and wait for the stars to line up right where sale = budget, and be happy with the best results, knowing its not flippin 1.7 fps |

you forgot to mention keeping it dunked in super-liquefied helium and pluging it into an infinite lightning bolt Xp

Problem-solved!
![]() It turns out it was the heat-sync fan. So I replaced that, et voila! Back up to 35-40ish fps. It's not 100, but at least it's where it was when this whole thing started. Thank you!! |
