Update:
It was the video card and I have the latest drivers. Dell only has drivers updated through 2007 but the tech that showed up was good about putting the latest on.
Thanks to each that gave suggestions and information it was appreciated.

I gots the same system,, XP pr , with the gs 7900, and are having the same problems, but in a desktop thingo, not a laptop.I too did the driver thing with no luck. The hottest ive seen it is about 65 degrees. And ive just overclocked it, so will run that open gl program now and let you know the temp.

This is the readings i got using the fur mark stress tester
idle temp is 49 degrees
Max GPU Temp: 67°C Resolution: 1440x900 (FS) - MSAA: 4X
FPS: min=15 max=23 avg=17

Your temps are good, but it can still be a failing video card. I would suggest using Driver Sweeper to uninstall the driver and doing a reinstall. You can also run a test on the CPU and memory using Orthos, as memory problems can have similar effects.
