Well, a friend of mine works at a club that hosts game events throughout the day.
She had posted for the 3 separate events she was hosting that day - real events, different start/finish times, and hosted by her.
Suddenly, she received disciplinary reports from Lindens for posting these events.
I don't see what she did wrong. Many people who host similar events have had the same duisciplinary actions against them. Everything is within the rules for posting. We even had a Linden review our posts before entering them and she said they were fine.
There is a mean evil vigilante environment brewing here and i don't like it.
People who enjoy going to clubs and playing game events will suffer because she and I will no longer post these events.
If this is part of the "Plan To Close All Clubs That Host Game Events", it's working. All our friends who enjoy the companionship and fun of a game of Slingo, Tringo, JokerPoker, etc, are S.O.L (sadly outta luck).
I'm pretty good at budgeting my money. If they start charging a "small fee" like classifieds (where some people pay over $15000 per week just to be first in list), count us out.
Go after the people who are abusing it and keep your grubby ham-handed vigilante policing off the honest posters.
I'm going to Godwin this thread by suggesting Torse Jr. wear a nice black armband as he strong arms innocent people.

That which can be gamed (i.e. event ARs) will be gamed and claims of "investigation" appear to mean "took a glance at".
If your friend received warnings, I wouldn't fret about it too much. However, it does seem that she could be subject to the same takedowns again no matter how closely she adheres to the event posting rules. I would take a close look at them before posting again - not that appeals of "but I followed the rules" will typically get one very far.
*sigh*

From: Travis Lambert If filing an Abuse Report is the action you would prefer that we take when we see an event listing on the calendar that clearly belongs in the Classified Ads.... In the Abuse Report dialog, shouldn't there be an "Event Abuse" dropdown choice in the type selection? Just sayin' I like that!

I don't think its fair we get charged for classifieds
05-09-2006 09:21
In rl I'm a single mom and a student, don't have much money as it is, I play sl cause right now I can't do much in rl. There are people paying over a hundred a week to be number 1 in the classifieds, I can't afford to post my park or my store in the classifieds, I'm paying over a 100 a month for my avie and land fee's and now I'm suppose to pay even more to post in classifieds which gets me absolutely no business at all, I could see if it was a reasonable rate. Why can't they have events calendar for people who are having games and contest and another events calendar for people who are having sales and want people to know about it. With out the sale of my clothes I can't afford to even play sl. So this not posting events is causing people like me who don't have much money in rl to not be able to enjoy the game fully. I just can't afford to be here, and its no fun if I can't create and sale things with out being charged my life savings.

I'm going to Godwin this thread by suggesting Torse Jr. wear a nice black armband as he strong arms innocent people. Yes my business partner Cinda Hoodoo was suspended 3 days for listing a movie (OMG) twice in one day..yes i agree vigilante is a nice term to call this..the movie was shown twice, and we see tringo, bingo, slingo, escort service clubs listed numerous times a day at the same locals, seems SL picks and choses who and how they will dish out justice to, sad, as i always considered the Lindens while lacking in any common sense, at least made a reasonable attempt at appearing fair..sad truely sad they are once again they are showing the world what they are truely made of...lol money (btw cinda gave me permission to use her name here..so dont even go there..as their business mentor in SL, am advising them not to further pursue the investment in land or time they have so far) as far as abuse reports go, i see them nothing more in most cases but a useful tool for griefers, and Torley be ashamed for encouraging this behavior!

Nothing Better to do
05-15-2006 18:24
Is it that the people at SL have nothing better to do then check up on events? Maybe they need to try and find a little time fixing bugs.
If you don't like how people use your events maybe you should just remove it. And make us pay for it. I bet this is where its going anyway. Seems to me like just the reason to charge us for it.

From: Lias Leandros Oh goodie, extortion and threats from people I pay. That was what this game was lacking. Now it's fun. You remind me of those women who buy a new dress to wear to a party, wear it to the party with the tags carefully tucked in so no-one can see them, and then RETURN IT TO THE STORE THE DAY AFTER THE PARTY.

Huh? not sure what your implying here, but between us in membership fees, land fees, wer'e sending LL $250 a month, of which there is no refund, EVER...if we attempt to make a few L in events..by bringing attention to our business, omg line us up and shoot us..btw we run classifieds as well, using 101 marketing questions and tracking traffic, only about 3 percent of our business comes thru the classifieds. The events bring them by, and if our listing is not in events, we are usually asked why not by ppl that are trying to go back and find us...pfttt lets just all go to basic membership...and forget the hassle, we can all just wander around "looking" for things to do, because its heading thata way..its almost just not worth it..who needs all the BS this place provides...

From: Jesse Linden Since spamming the events calendar continues to be an ongoing problem and the community isn't willing to follow the very explicit Events Posting Rules, we have no choice but to consider charging for listings and further enforcing disciplinary action. If you would like to see event postings remain free I would suggest reminding your fellow Residents that the calendar is not meant as a way to avoid paying for Classified ad space. Kudos. I fully endorse this decision and think it is the best possible one to be made. All I have to say (to the general populas) is Don't blame Linden Lab for charging an event posting fee blame the people who abuse a free service and refuse to follow the rules.

Since I alphabetize the Classifieds when I look at them, where the ad is placed is irrelevant.

Fix The Client First!!!!!!
05-17-2006 12:59
This got brought up before (and I smell a Linden fait accompli in this post): 1. Charging a fee will NOT stop spammers (at least successful ones) 2. For a sample of events working, look at the Live Music category 2a. This might be an indicator, consider more narrow categories, rather than the over-broad and overlapping set we have now. The Live Music category /works/. Before we had it, it was often felt to be necessary to list Live Music under both Arts & Nightlife. 3. Build in AR tools - a button on the listing page 4. - My big one - Put decent filter capability in and we won't care. Also, LL - you control the posting - it goes through your interface to post. Try adding some simple validation and sanity checking on the posting system. Don't let the same AV post on more than 1 event for a time slot, make sure there's times in the fields etc. Also remind people that they can be AR'ed for spamming events while posting and that the penalties can include suspension. You've already killed DI and dwell, the 2 main tools that made doing actual entertainment viable (though of course it got gamed, and ultimately I don't blame you). But you keep hitting the providers of actual active entertainment, just as the Music scene is somehow managing to take off, in spite of all of the obstacles you've thrown in our path, I know that recently I've started using the events listings to look for events again, but /only/ live music (which I know is currently spam free) and once in a great while to look up a specific event (usually a party) that I need to TP to. Quite frankly, now that there's a Live Music category, I don't care too much about the crap that gunks up the rest of the listings, since I know I can browse that category without a problem (and I also have a feeling that the group will be heavily policed by those of us who participate in the "scene" . Here's another random thought, what if the fee was like a deposit? 1. You pay the fee, list the event. 2. Then bring back a form of the dwell system, but only for: a. Events listed for the timeframe listed. b. only if the listing host is present. (possibly add co-host option)? c. the listing was not AR'ed and found to be abuse.

*nod* Charging for posting events is only going to drive away the normal people hosting honest events. What we have right now is an overflow of commerical and club events and barely anything else. So why not take the different event types and depending on the type, it might either cost the host money, or make them money.
For example, I can bet if you brought back event rewards for educational events you would see a lot more people hosting classes (btw, there used to be a large number of classes every day in SL and it was a good thing). Then on that same note, put a charge on commerical/club events that we have too many of.
