For Second Life's 4th birthday party on June 23, 2007, otherwise known as SL4B (see the Wiki at https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SL4B_Portal) , I am soliciting ideas for an exhibit that will showcase SL's print media. In other words, in-world books, magazines and newspapers made by SL residents where you can turn the pages or wear as a HUD. They include ThinC books, Falk Bergman's printing method, etc. The exhibit will illustrate the history of magazine publishing in Second Life. I welcome any suggestions on how to showcase these publications, going beyond a typical display rack. I have listed all the magazines that I know of that are available in-world. Blogs and Web sites are not included in this list: SLiterary, PWND, theKonstrukt, OMG, Aspire, Metaverse Messenger (newspaper) Second Style, Slustler, Players, ... This is a list of publications created in-world by SL residents. Publications created by Real Life media companies have NOT been included, nor have magazines that have stopped publishing. If you are a publisher, please feel free to suggest ideas on a clever installation. It could be Disneyesque, futuristic, traditional, Victorian, interactive...anything! Please IM me, or e-mail me at: Ute.Hicks [at] gmail.com Thank you

When you go to the portal link given above and look around you find a place to send queries to, and the person that you are supposed to send queries to has a blog on which they make the following statement toward people they think are disagreeing with them on an issue from a while back: "Grow the fuck up you whiney little pricks". This can be seen here . This doesn't seem like a good attitude to me.

Second Life's 4th Birthday (SL4B)
04-17-2007 13:35
Hello MaryLee, and thanks for taking the time to peruse the SL birthday Party Wiki. The party committee is very excited about the new SL4B estate, which will have sims that showcase each year of SL's history. I appreciate your concern regarding the use of profanities found on a personal Web page. However, the comments bear no relationship to the current project nor the scripting or building skills of SLB4's project manager. SL4B is a team effort and involves some of the most respected avatars in SL. We look forward to another exciting, immersive experience as more users get involved. It's this weekend but I haven't heard any news of it in-world or out. The wiki don't give any details. Can someone please post locations and schedule of events. I know 9 sims are allocated, but I can't TP into any of them to see what is happening. I've found the calendar for the art celebration part of it: http://eventful.com/calendars/C0-001-000074791-5/events

The sims are open only to volunteers setting up for the shindig....not sure what time they will open on the 23rd.. I know this because Book Island has some posters displayed and I have a store on Book Island and was able to place a poster there.. Amalia.

It's a birthday party where all the guests have to stay at home.

The central SL4B sim is full, and all around its edge in the surrounding SL sims, people are lining the sim boundary trying to get in. Totally frustrated of course. Welcome to SL's legendary non-scalability for events. Happy Birthday, SL! ... Using the word "Happy" loosely here. Morg.

Those who failed to get in (ie. the majority) didn't miss anything anyway. The "party" was rather flat --- the SL residents who managed to get in had to organize their own entertainment. There wasn't even a land stream, so people had to use sound effects to provide dancing music. Not the best of parties, but hey, at least we tried to liven up the mood with some dancing. Everyone else there just stood around and did nothing to create a birthday spirit. Somewhat sad. Happy Birthday SL, anyway. Morg.

We celebrated on our sim and got really (virutually) drunk! Couldn't get the video stream to work and shrugged it off. Long live the imperfect but compelling SL. Never quite what you expect.
Happy Birthday SL..see ya next year..will never be dull anyway!

Well we've currently got a banjo and an electric guitar going on sound effects, and we're dancing. Bring instruments and join us in SL4B. Looks like it's up to us! Morg.

Things just got a lot wierder.
The SL4B Event Organizer just told us that she's been asked to clamp down on our partying music. That kind of put paid to our resident-based attempt at birthday celebrations.
This is all a bit odd.

The Chronicles of SL4B, continued
06-24-2007 16:29
Well, too bad that the central SL4B sim was a washout as far as parties go, but we were determined to celebrate SL's birthday there somewhere! So, we hot-footed it over to SL03 or 4 where we heard that there was more of a party atmosphere. And sure enough, there was! In fact there was a whole sim full of grey people roleplaying some really intense swimming through treacle, and it looked really authentic! And there was music too, although it just didn't work because to be in step with our motions and the sim's Time Dilation 0.05 it should have been played at 0.01 bpm. Nevertheless, for the better part of an hour we joined in the fun, and we probably waded as far as 20 feet, it was quite enthralling! But swimming through treacle is pretty taxing on the muscles, so for the the last 10 mins of SL's birthday in my timezone we just gave each other SL birthday greetings and chatted about the past, which was pretty nice and celebratory of everyone's efforts over the years. But something still wasn't right ... you need music and dancing for a party! So, as the midnight bell tolled, it was Events->Live Music->Search to the rescue, finding good bands, and sending teleports to the others in our little SL4B celebration group. And at long last we rocked in the dawn of SL's new year, courtesy of the excellent live musicians of this virtual world! Well done guys and gals, you made up for the disappointments earlier on, and we had a lot of fun. Happy Birthday SL, and love to all! Morg.

The SL4B in London (England) at the T-Bar was most excellent. I arrived about 6 hours after it started and it was still going strong. The friendly Rivers Run Red crew and the Lindens there did a great job. Babbage Linden was showing of the SLorpedo game and it was brilliant. If you haven't seen this game which ties in playing in the physical world and the results appearing in the virtual world, well, you really must check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd-MoN9d_Nw is a link to it being played from the SL point-of-view. It was great to drink and mingle with some of the wonderous people who make a difference in Second Life.

Don't Give up on sL4B
06-26-2007 05:33
Hi Everyone! I don't want to make this sound as if I am promoting my little plot on the SL4B-I just wanted to invite you all to give it another try! The displays are amazing!! Grab something fun to ride around in as you look, a bunch of us 'wore' the dancing cow and paraded down the street with our party hats on. What a sight we were. At one point we had about 15 in our dancing cow parade. I put out a free cow for you to take if you want one at our plot. I think we may do the parade again this Sat-it was just to fun! The first day of the Birthday party was not FUN! The sims were full, the lag was a monster (20 minutes to travel 2 sl feet), but the next day was SO much better!!! There ARE fun things to do in the SL4B---We have a little plot in the pg04. We have a dance floor WITH music and have hidden free gifts around for people to find. Every night we have been having a blast!!! The official schedule of Events for the SL4B is here. http://feeds.feedburner.com/SL4BOurs events however is not in there, so you have to go to the plot or look in the search for what we have planned. Tonight is Campfire Storytelling......where we sit around and share funny personal life stories. Don't give up on the SL4B! Come by and visit and say hi!

From: Aislinn Jewell I don't want to make this sound as if I am promoting my little plot on the SL4B-I just wanted to invite you all to give it another try! Actually, it's great that you are promoting it! One of the most evident problems with SL4B has been the almost total lack of information and promotion ... it could hardly have been more low key, some kind of celebration by stealth. The problem was highly visible on the live music scene. The more accomplished musicians like Cylindrian Rutabaga always fill sims to capacity at every event, yet at SL4B there were barely a dozen or two of us cheering Cyl on. Surely SL4B should have been the premier musician's event of the year, with advertising to match! Pretty depressing really, but no surprise at all when you consider that the SL4B event organizers didn't even bother to post musician's names to Events->Live Music. I have no idea why. Morg.

One of the most evident problems with SL4B has been the almost total lack of information and promotion ... it could hardly have been more low key, some kind of celebration by stealth. Morg. I think the promoter was so overwhelmed, the simple tast of listing the event in the most obvious place just slipped their minds. I thought about posting it.....but did not want to step on anyones toes......I think I should have stepped, and apologized later!! I try to avoid the events search, as it ticks me off every time I look in it. The blatent abuse to promote business and other non event type things ruins what could be a great source of information. *sigh* This was my first time with the SL Birthday group. Next year I plan on really digging in and helping with planning and promting! I think a webpage dedicated to the whole event would be really nice. So you can see what is avaialbe to look at, what events are being held and a tool to use to explain the event for future birthdays. I'm sure over the years it will get better and better! Thanks to all who have come out and helped make it a succuss! Tonight is roller derby.....IF I can find someone to take the script restrictions off long enough to get our water balloons throwing again....It promises to be loads of fun!
