Oooooo, I love the idea of a Rocky party! :D Uh, I hate to be a Brad... (Say! Do any of you guys know the Madison?) but what's the legalities of displaying copyrighted material, like the Rocky Horror movie, over the Internet like this? Would this be covered as a fair use of the movie?

I'd really like to see the party go on...but I know from experience at running RL Science Fiction/Fantasy conventions that people can get their noses bent out of shape about this kinda thing. :P

Someone just HAD to bring THAT up.

Ok, I know none of the following will hold water in court, but here goes anyways.

1. I actually own a reel to reel copy of this movie that has been used in many RL theatres for midnight showings. I'm aware that just owning a copy of the film doesn't give the right to show it for profit, but that never seemed to stop any of the theatres that used my copy.

2. I am NOT doing this for profit. I mentioned charging admission earlier to help recoup money spent. I now retract that. This will be free for everyone.

3. I know you can legally show small portions of movies. Since I will only be running this movie at 2 frames per second (at BEST) or less, and the actual movie has MANY MANY frames per second, I am actaully only showing a very small portion of the movie. (hows that for twisted logic?)

4. It is the copyright holder's responsibility to pitch a fit. I will take it down when I get a cease and desist letter (and 20th Century Fux will have a lot of angry people writing them nasty hate mail at that point I hope). =)

5. The DMCA licks monkey balls and so does anyone invoking it, according to the transitive property of monkey ball licking. (OK, so thats not really a relevant issue, just a fact)

6. Sue me... you won't get anything but pocket change and bad press.

So that out of the way... I had to restart chopping the movie up because I realized it was being done in WAY TOO HIGH of a resolution. Should be done by the time I get home from work tonight though.

Also, I started work on designing the theatre. Its going to be small and smell like a high school gym, but thats the way its supposed to be, right? I'm probably going to have to ask my business partner (the guy who actaully OWNS the land I'm building on) to tear down his little office building to free up prims... thats not gunna be pretty. hehehe

RHPS in SL call for help
02-04-2005 16:07
Ok, you TV scripting guru's. It seems taht putting this movie together is going to be harder than previously thought. So those of you who have scripted TV's or similar, I would REALLY appreciate any help you could give me in setting up the screen. If someone wants to actually take this as a commisioned job (assuming i cant get volunteer) I will pay for it. I could probably make a working version myself, but i just dont have enough time in-world to do all the things I'd like, and do to RL issues, my in-world time is going to be even shorter for the next couple of weeks.

post here or contact me in-world and we can hammer out the details.
thanks

I have always thought this would be a great permanent fixture to SL. I will donate some time. Let me know a piece of your plan. I can do pretty much anything - texture/script/sound/build.

yeah, i intend for it to be permanant... once i get it set up, im just gunna let it run once every 4 hours, 24/7 that way ppl can host RHPS events whenever they want. my friend and AV geek unasoto DeFarge is busy chopping up the movie... i'm gunna be spending a small fortune on GOM to get the $L to upload all the frams... ive got a theatre design in mind (modeled after one of the RL theatres i spent so many years in). The big issue now is the script to play the movie... in order to have it all preloaded "behind the curtain" before the movie starts, i figure im gunna have to load sections onto multiple "screens" and then move them into place at the correct time and cycle thru each ones movie frames. Syncing up the audio will be another challenge. I know people have already written code to do all this, and i really hate to reinvent the wheel. This is going to be a big project, and due to my now even more limited time in-world i don't know if i can handle it. suggestions would be great, volunteers *tips hat to Sapphire* would be even better. ^_^

yikes thats a hard to read paragraph above, but im getting ready to close up shop and head home so im in a hurry... sorry =(

A conservative estimate places the cost of uploading a 2000 movie with a frame a second at 7200 lindens if you put 10 frames per texture. Could probably push that no lower then 4000. Then again you don't even know if it'll work.

What I'd recommend would be to get video streaming software, have everyone watching play the game windowed and then get on teamspeak for the callbacks. Video, theather, sound. All set up. Unless you wanna sink in the 4000 lindens.

Got some toast anyone?

Oh, and if someone needs a Frankenfurter or Sweet Transvestite or Brad or Riff Raff, Aazhdeen Thetan has those too. IM me and I'll kick him to get them out in world, I think only the Transvestite is out right now.

Great project! Worthy!

I'm having some problem finding an animator that will work on this. Been asking some here and there, and the ones I'v asked dont have it or have never heard of the movie. I would think ppl that have animation software could probably just download it from generic libraries, so it should be a no brainer & hopefully not too expensive for a copy privledged version. I'm not an animator and really dont know. Does anyone have any suggestions on who might have this animation or would be willing to go the mile and work on this with me/us?

I'm willing to pay a bit for it if I can find an animator that can "handle" the reselling privs...

my estimates were actaully much higher, and yes, i figure i'll be dropping quite a bit of $L on this, and I don't have a problem with that. (except small issues, like paying my morgage, bills, eating... ya know, trivial stuff)

I thought of going this route, but paying for a server to tream the movie is more cost prohibitive than uploading the whole bloody movie (expecially since i can use it forever once i get it uploaded). I have a lot of bandwidth at my disposal, but not enought to stream a movie to 20-30 people, ANd run the teamspeak server, AND be logged into SL. Besides, i hate running SL windowed, and having the movie in an actual "theatre" has more class.

Now on a related topic, I saw mention of some people in the scripting forums discussing ways to actually stream video onto a prim set to a particular color using an overlay program... sort of like a blue screen. I don't think anyone has actaully DONE this yet however, and it is certainly beyond my capabilities. It would also still leave me with the problem of having to pay a monthy fee for a server to stream it from, but that would definatly be a cool way to do it.

But i think i'm going to go with the method i originally had in mind. A huge one time fee isnt that big of a deal. I've already had people offer donations to help offset the dent in my wallet. Doing it this way will also insure that the movie is there for anyone to watch, until i get that dreaded cease and desist letter... which will hopefully not be for a long time ^_^

using the dance machine I have, one only needs a single copy of the animation anyways ^_^

Haha, now I actually have somewhere to wear my Frankenfurter av. XD;

Also, I don't think the actual moving video is really THAT important, since most of us know the whole thing by heart anyway. I vote for "live" actors!

...Which means, we have more need for the proper anims...

But, wouldn't the cost of actually uploading the movie be more than enough to pay for custom anims?

yeah, it probably would, but i just think it would be more fun to actaully have the movie running... its part of the "magic".

you are right however, most of us do have the movie momeorized... but what about those that dont? all the virgins will miss out on seeing it, and some of the callbacks are dependant on little things in the film. Yeah, tnose jokes might not seem all that important, but again, i think its part of the magic. besides, i'm already cutting up the movie and setting up multiple frames into single images... i have to justify wasting all this time somehow. ^_^

Poor virgins.. They should see a non-cut-up version! ;_; The callbacks are definitely important, yes. I still think it could be done completely on sound, but, yes, the magic. The magic is important. I still vote for "live" actors, though. <3 In addition.

Finally, though, a use for the Party Kits In A Box!

What a Fabulous idea! Have you considered holding an inworld charity event to help yourself raise funds for this effort? I'm sure many people who dont typically frequent the forums would be more then willing to particpate and donate to your efforts here.

Thats a fab idea as well! ^_^
however, I think im just going to "do it" and then set up a tip jar (i'll sell totally voluntary tickets at the box office outside the theatre) and maybe sell "prop kits" (scripted toilet paper, rice, hot dogs, noise makers, party hats, etc...). I'd rather shell out to start with than have a bunch of ppl donate only to get that dreaded C&D letter a week later.
great suggestion for getting the word out however.

Oh, and in response to Nikolaii Uritsky:
we will ABSOLUTLY have live actors on stage while the movie runs... what would Rocky be without a cast?

in that regard, anyone wanting to build props for the live show would be hailed as a god (for 2 or 3 hours at least)

I agree with Pie. You should hold a benefit to raise funds, maybe show a few frames ahead. Post it and I'll be there with Lindens :D

I've been looking and asking around for the Time Warp animation with very little success. I wish I had the time to snag some animation software, and mostl likely just download it from vast shared libraries. Does anyone know any animators that I can approach on this?

Since someone bumped this thread, I thought I'd give you all a little update.

i've uploaded some sample clips to play with and figure out how to properly show a whole movie... its going to be nuts, but its fun.

I also built a very nice theatre to show the film in. Well actually, it was a run down little hole in the wall place that long ago became a dollar theatre. I said 'was' because the got sold out from under me. The land belonged to a friend of mine, who had it set to sell for an outrageous ammount of L$. He had just gone an purchased 2 more small plots in the same sim as prim farms, when poof, my theatre gets returned to me in a million pieces. Ok so i should have had it all linked and saved, but who knew someone would have paid that much for 2048m2 of land?

Anywaz, long story short, he ended up getting MORE land, for less money in a sim running twice as fast.... and the theatre is coming along nicely once again. Altho i am gunna need a photoshop geek to make the place look authentic.

ok sorry if im rambling, its late and i need to sleep.

I hope I don't read about it after it's over like I did with Cubey's Walk-Ins.

Can we get put on a event notification list?

Nogard, you need to your edit your response to my earlier post so we can create a false historical record of an innocuous posting Then I'll come back and delete this note asking you to remove the passage you quoted and no one will ever know I mentioned the subject.
