I've had this idea for an event awhile, I'm just not sure how to go about it or even making it work:
An art class type setup with a posing avatar standing on a stage, or a prim still life, or a uploaded photo of something, whatever. Then we have a bunch of artists (the attendes) draw their intepretation of the model and then uploading it to SL, we could have a vote or something and the winner would get an amount of money or award of some sort, but also giving artists a chance to talk and share their work with other artists. Im not sure what I'd do about the time restriction, because i want to give people as much time as they need to be as creative as possible
maybe it might be better to have a group and then send out a screen shot of whatever we are interpreting and then meet up a few days later for an event to display everyones work? it would give people chance to really go crazy

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? would anyone be interested?

I love this idea Nylon.

Maybe make it an exhibition rather than a competition? And give everybody as much time as they like. More of a social art gatherthing. Just an idea, the competition version sounds good too. I'll gladly pitch in if you need anything from me.

I've always wanted to see a "sketchpad" type of idea inside SL, but I'd really like it, especially if it could help teach me to draw things other than really bad stick figures that look like I sneezed on the page!

Good idea! If it was a still life, you could leave it up at a specified location to give people time. I like that better than a 2D screen shot because one of the interesting things to see would be what angle each artist approaches the subject.

Of course with a model it would be tough, and might have to limit the model's time to a certain duration each day for a week or something.

Oh..that's a great idea..pick a scenic (or not so scenic) spot in SL as the "subject" and give them a week to complete.

Or..pay a model a certain amount of cash to sit for an hour a day at some SL location, and artists could use that time to work on their drawings/paintings.

Or just get a model to pose, and let the artists take snapshots from whatever angle they want, and use them as the reference for their artworks.

"Uh excuse me? Miss? Ya, that wasn't the position you were in yesterday. Ya, I am looking at my drawing of you right now, and your arm was slightly lower...yes like that. And you had your leg crossed.... yes perfect. And your head was much larger that it is now, almost comically large like your misshapen nose...I guess that's a nose, well it was much closer to your chin...like just a little below your chin...and you had six fingers on one hand and two on the other.... You know what, I may just suck at drawing"

I would participate as well... once I get my scanner set up. I work much better with non-digital art tools.

side note: different concept but wanted to let you know cause you might also find it fun:
Artist Ambush in Perry meets every wed around 7pm SL time I think. Garrison gives a theme, then people have 30 minutes to go off and dream something up (can be collage, drawings, photos, etc). The pics are posted to easels and voted on. It is usually more humor centric than art-focused, but you can see some neat pieces of work.

you know, the challenge in RL figure drawing groups is that the poor model needs to take so many breaks (it's hard work!). In this case, someone comes up with a cool "frozen" pose and the model can stand for 30 minutes without taking a breath!

and if the model wears a really good skin, then you'd be doing art on someone else's art! You could then make your art into a skin and... how very post-modern recursive.

this reminds me that one of these days I am going to print out the templates, do a watercolor, and scan that in for my skin.

OOOOOh! Watercolour Art SKins!!! Yayyy.

I want one if you ever start selling them, Forseti. :-) (*is hopeless at visual arts herself, but adores watercolours!*)

Also, folks interested in displaying their rl artwork in 2nd life may want to contact Devon Quirk between now and Saturday: Gato House (ideally designed for art gallery space) is having its first art show on this Saturday. Artists can display, or even sell, their works at that time, with no charge to the artists and no commission on sales. This is entirely to promote arts in SL. We have a couple of talented artists who have put up their artworks already, but we need more... and sculpture would be a nice contrast too.
(threatens) If we don't get enough artists to fill the space, I might have to dig out my freaky shriner photos and scan them in. hehe.

Answering for Perse

Hey Winter! you may remember me: Perse's manager at the spa. Gato house is right next door and the showing is on mature land. Your alienpics would be an interesting addition. Talk to Devon Quirk about adding them. My understanding is that the show runs to the end of April. He will know for sure as he is curator for the show. Some interesting stuff there so far (including Nylon's, Forseti's, Toxic Neon's, Daz's and many other very talented artists. I am naming folks whose names I remember, but there is another artist I wish I remembered the name of who did some awesome oil on canvas paintings represented at the show). Do come by, folks if you like. Right next door to the Phoenix Hotsprings Spa and Massage.

I taught one of these art class events about a month or two ago and it went ok, but people wanted to grief it real bad. I did a art class on portraits in sl. If you need help setting things up for it let me know. i have a art animation I made where the avies draw on a pad.

You know, some models I've had in life drawing class weren't far off from that. There was this guy Ed. Ed was very large. And he had this big boil on his...um...<shivers>...and you had to draw it!

Great idea and will definately be in to going to this class if I can. One suggestion, I really like the idea of having a model, but do we have to show our pics? It would be nice to just do a heap of different poses, including some held for a couple of seconds (have done this in RL once, it was really good practise for fast drawing), and sketch these in RL - without the pressure to upload and display if you didn't want to.

That's just my opinion.

What a cool idea, I know I use poser very often for drawing figures since I can't exactly get models easily....

I know theres a figure sort of pose set out on Renderocity, I might have it. If not I can go grab it and upload the poses. :)

nylon, i gather you already had one of these events? I thought I saw a pic of barnes strutting his stuff. :)

I don't want to be a burden, but i would LOVE an IM if you organize another one of these.
