Ricky, it's a 114 level course so it's technically introductory. However, it's VERY in-depth and math/physics/chemistry intense. I wish it was a two-semester course so I could suck it all in.

Chance, I've just finished the notecards, and now I'm going to photoshop together some slides. Considers this your "notice" that it will be soon. I'm looking at tomorrow (Tuesday) I HOPE for the lecture. If everyone wants to posts some times that work best for them, I can try and pick the best time for everyone.

I'm really looking forward to this!

It's DONE!!! The notes + slides are now finished, and ready for the presenting =D Stay tuned for when I make the exact time, still not sure.
I'll be hanging around the lecture hall tonight in Abitibi if you want a preview =)

I hope to give my first lecture on The Sun.

Sorry, couldn't resist this (not sure why it didn't occur to me the first time around).

How do you plan to get up there?

P.S. I'd love feedback on this whole university/lecture idea of mine, but PLEASE, naysayers don't bother telling me you think it's a dumb idea here. I don't want to hear "blah blah blah..SL is for fun..blah blah can do these things elsewhere".

It's a great idea, pacticularly if you open it up to general lectures, have guest lecturers, etc. Great way to study, too.

Oh yes, my entire university will be open to anyone to lecture on (non-SL) material. I already have a few people semi-interested in teaching.

My event has been posted! The lecture is scheduled to be held at 6pm PST, today (Tuesday)! For anyone that can't make it, sorry, there is no universal time for events. Please IM me in-game with questions. Hope to see you all there!

How long will it last? I only get off work at 6pm today. Maybe I can catch the tail end.

Chance, I reckon around an hour or so. What time do you normally get home? I could adjust by 30 minutes if that works better, since you're one of the people that seems to be pretty interested in it. I can't do it *too* late though, since I have a psychology exam at 9am on Wednesday that I haven't crammed for yet =)

Better just do it when you can do it. I don't want to hold anything up, what with having to catch the train and all. Maybe I'll catch the next one ;)

Hey! You're violating your own rules, which is why this was under General to begin with. In the description for the Event Discussion thread:

(Genuine question to Jeska Linden)
If it shouldn't be in General or in Event Discussion, where would posts like this go? Classifieds, perhaps?

I have an astronomy test on Thursday, so if it's before then, or even after, I'd go. Astronomy is pretty fun to talk about. In my class we're going over dark matter, heh

edit: whoops, i found out im too later after reading more of the thread... how'd it go?

It was GREAT! A little longer than planned at 2 hours, but some of you stuck with it to the end and I hope you learned something good. Soon I'll have a transcript posted in the library.

Mega-thanks to ALL of you who came and helped me realize my dream =D The seeds of my university of sprouted!

I don't mind bumping a friendly thread...

OmegaX,

I may work at night, and I may be a bit fuzzy before I get my coffee, but I'm not fooled by your lectures in this thread. There's no such thing as "the sun". There's night-time, and then there are those hours when I shut my blinds against they searing, eye-piercing daggers of energy which attempt to assault me in my sleep.

I've never seen any "sun" anywhere. You people are just pulling my leg.

Gydeon.

(A university is a wonderful idea, however. I hope it's still there for me to visit.)

Hey, I just wanted to drop a line and say that a university sounds fabulous. I just taught my first class earlier tonight (Chinese 101) and while I would never fool myself into thinking it was a hit, I think there was enough response to keep it going. Think there's room in that big 'ol University for me? :)

Even if there isn't, I won't hold it against you. I'll even come to your lectures, cause astronomy is cool.

I wanted to recommend something to you, OmegaX. What about having other students volunteer, or pay, or if you want them specifically, pay them, to lecture in your virtual hall. I know I'd volunteer for a number of things. Anyway, very cool idea you've had.

Interesting Educational Sites in SL?
05-16-2005 09:53
Omega - what a fascinating project! (Ambitious, but very interesting!) :-)

I'm in Education too, interested in teaching university faculty to use SL for classroom enhancement, & will be doing an in-world workshop for a small group of faculty on my land in late June / early July (no date yet). I'd love to see your site!

BTW: I am interested in hearing from other educators who have used (or are using) SL for teaching - anything to convince them of its merits! The workshop will include a "virtual tour" & I'd love to hear others' ideas and suggestions on "not to miss" sites and projects, especially education-related.

Thanks!

One thing... about school classes...
06-01-2005 11:25
I really love this idea! But, last time I attended a class (not one of your classes btw, a different class ) the lag was so horrible. There were 25 people there, and all the prims there and such.. that was so bad :(
I wish someone who had a class would make it on an open sim, outdoors... just sitting down on the grass, on little 1 prim seats, no scripts out and tell the students come with minimal attachments or come in a class toga haha and bald heads... you know... really silly but.. the way SL is it's so dang laggy when a lot of us get together in a done up classroom made of hundreds of prims on decorated land and all of us wearing hair and shoes and belts and such.. it gets so hard to talk, walk, move... LEARN. :(
I just hope more classes come to the game.. really it's very wonderful to learn new things and be around others who want to learn.

Good luck on the class!
