I've made a retro 70's style discotheque, "Disco Inferno" on my little plot in Hector. Pretty much everything (apart from using a few free scripts) has been made by me and is certainly unique in itself even if similar things already exists. It's "mine" in every sense of the word, rather than merely another 'out of the box' copy of the same old clubs we've all learnt to despair of when they pop up out of nowhere next to us and lag the hell of out the area.
I'm paying my L$30 a week to appear in the directory.... I've advertised in the events calendar (for actual events, rather than "hey we're still here" as most seem to be) - yet I don't seem to get a great deal of visitors.
So much of the content in SL is designed to attract people through sex, fetishes, money giveaways (chairs/raffles etc), which I can't or won't do... all I offer is fun in a themed environment where people can get away from the hassles of life and just be silly. Chest wigs, medallions and big hair are available if you don't have your own (women's outfits coming soon).
Is there really a market for such stuff in SL? Or is anything not adult or money giveaway themed just a waste of time these days?
I've spent a lot of time putting this together.... full of enthusiasm.... yet.... people just don't seem to find me or aren't interested. If anyone has any great ideas, I'd love to hear them, as I've run out.
A somewhat downhearted newbie,
Lewis

Try to travel around, make lots of friends and invite them (and their friends) over. It might take a long time, but at least you'll get people who like your place and company instead of people who just expect you to pay them for being there*. * /108/88/74966/2.html#post779285

Lewis, My advice is to be patient & persistant. Start doing a regular 'event' every day at the same time, same location that people can start to expect. If only 2 people come, don't give up & post it again. Get feedback from friends that come and listen to their suggestions. Eventually it'll be 3, then 6, then 10, and so on. Good Luck!

Candide's advice is good, meet specific people, schmooze them a while, then gently introduce the concept of having fun at a disco themed club. If they don't bite, maybe you have a friend, if not a club visitor.
Also you don't seem to have an ad in your forum signature. Put one there, even a plain text description would be better than nothing. Maybe an endorsement or two. A picture, and a link.
With the signature ad in place, read the forums and find questions you can answer in a helpful way. You get your sig ad displayed and the questioner gets answers. It's win win.
See if you can get some club goers to wear t-shirts with ads, and put an ad in their forum signatures, and get them to answer someone's questions on how to do something or get their video drivers loaded right or some such .
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice.... hope to see some of you people soon!
The club is called Disco Inferno, and you can either find it in 'search', or look for Hector 175,6. It's right next to Coco's Cottages just off of the main road.
I'm gonna work on designing a club advert t-shirt... I know people like giveaways... and try and figure out some event schedules - sadly being in the UK i'm ahead of most of you and when you want to boogie.... I want to sleep! Having said that, the club stays open anyway and you're welcome to just drop by and shake your groove thang any time (remember to turn on your audio too).
I see by the "Traffic" counter a few people have dropped by already... so let's see what happens.
Thanks again.

Hi Lewis, I've basically given up on even opening the Events calendar. I regard it as a total waste of time, and I think there are others like me. I thnk word of mouth is your key, and perhaps a simple regular event, as someone else has already suggested. I know I'm glad to find a disco bar on The Grid! (That is, once I get the coordinates to it ) - Ethan Edit: Oh, just saw your post...now I know where you are As far as the UK/US time difference goes, that may be worth some of your attention. I know that part of the appeal of a regular night spot is being on first-name basis with the management. If you're largely absent during peak dancing hours in the US, what about getting yourself a manager who can work more USA-friendly hours? I wouldn't think you'd have to advertise for the job or take the first one that come along; you may find a good candidate among the folks who come to your place more than once...someone with a bit of personality. Maybe let them set out a tip jar for themselves, and they can work for tips while you collect the dwell points? I think that could be an equitable arrangement.

I agree that there is a derth of places in SL that are not of the sex, money ball, "best boobs" contest variety, so I think you just have to give it some time and people will find you. Ethan has a good point about having some kind of staff during US dance hours.

I ran my first 'event' last night.... five turned up, so I was quite happy considering that hardly anyone knows me yet!
I will be running "Magical Mystery Tours" - yes, I know the name is more sixties than seventies but it's recognisable.... just an hour's wander round SL, taking in some of the more interesting builds that don't get the exposure they deserve, because they are overshadowed by other places with the draw of sex and money which is far too abundant in game.
There's no set schedule as yet (because of the Christmas season coming up of course people will be doing other stuff) but once the new year starts, I hope to run them regularly. If you can find it amongst the other clutter, check the events calendar. Because of the US/UK time difference I'm guessing most will be around 1pm or 2pm game time.
