Read my lips when i say that DJ music is NOT A LIVE MUSIC EVENT and should
not be, repeat, SHOULD NOT BE POSTED UNDER LIVE MUSIC EVENTS So stop spamming your DJ events in the Live music events category for me to waste my time sifting through them when I want quality live music not, prerecorded hip hop, rock or rap crap. Even using the title of Live Entertainment for DJ events is not correct, its pre recorded music and content entertainment or DJ Entertainment. They need a separate category for DJ Entertainment.
DJ's play "Pre recorded" music and content not "LIVE MUSIC AND CONTENT" as live music happens in real time, in your face events. You dont see a DJ running a nance brody session??? They should put a script in the forum for the text recognition of "DJ" and if its submitted for an event its immediately removed.
DJ music can be posted under the category of Nightlife/entertainment miscellaneous Commercial Games and contests Pagaents Arts and culture Charity / Support groups
So you can see you have enough groups to post to and it is not relavent and not appropriate to post to LIVE MUSIC. Doesnt anyone control that sort of thing????
Demonizer Extraordinaire p.s. Im not being rude Im just being assertive to demonstrate a point of view, Im sure all those feminists understand that.
Disclaimer:- If some of you are upset by the use of caps in the mythical assumption that it is shouting then I say, get a life, Its just a different font so understand that and dont flame this post over that issue, its not generic to the post and your wasting everyones time.

Although I agree with you for the most part, I find I'm an exception to this rule... yet I still get hassled sometimes when I try to discribe my show, and someone tells me that I'm not 'live music' yet they haven't seen my show. I incorporate live original electronica, on-the-fly musicmaking, as well as live remixing, scratching, and beat manipulation.... all that is mixed in with me DJing... when I do this I consider it live music, and I always will... when you see my show you'd understand. Therefore, when I (or any other "DJ" incoprorates live music into a "mix" set, I think it should be live music. I have two turntables, a mixer, a keyboard/synth, a sampler, a beat machine, and a few other soundmaking gizmos...those are my instruments. You're tired of DJs calling themselves 'live musicians' .... well I'm tired of being clumped into the category of DJ when 95% of "DJs" in SL are really just picking tracks and playing them, and I (and several others) are not. So overall, yes I agree with you.. however when a "DJ" lists a show that says "Live Original music & DJing in a mixset.... that's live music

Live mixing and electronic music mixed Live is LIVE music. Just not the kind of live music you want to hear. So when you see live music listed - just read carefully to make sure a piano or guitar is involved.
Several SL musicians that you would approve of use pre-recorded music while performing - unless they have a ten piece orchestra in their bedrooms.

:nods: with above posts. DJing is a live performance especially turntablism and the remix DJs who blend live musical phrases and sound manipulation with their sets. Of course there are loads of folk who just pass off playlists as 'DJ sets' which sure aint a live performance. If the DJs or event supervisors had the discipline to keep playlist sets or just poorly sequed songs out of the live section us DJing affendiados can find quality sets to listen to in the live sections. If you dont enjoy DJing as a live artform, skip past the posts with the letters DJ in???

Sure a LIVE performer can use PRE RECORDED backup material to compliment their LIVE voice or LIVE instrument. If a DJ performs the music, not plays it on a turntable, not remixes pre recorded music it , i.e. he or she actually sings it with their real voice live, or uses a musical instrument live (as a previous post, in their bathroom, they are the intrumentalist or whatever, then they are performing the music live. For you to say you are a live perormer because you rehash prerecoreded music together or put together a playlist of prerecorded music is a bunch of BS. The 'play' these musical notes using turntables. You seemed a bit closed-off to the concept so it's fruitless to continue to post here to you about it. Needless to say - DJs that mix live will continue to post in the live music section of the event listings and you will continue to bellow wildly for no reason. Enjoy the music.

Therefore all you wannnabe "LIVE' performers, stop spamming the live music events with your NOT LIVE events Thank you for displaying ignorance at it's peak. I understand what you think you might be trying to say.... but instead of telling playlisting DJs not to post their events in live music, you're instead simply offending a lot of people that are performing live music... you as one individual have no right to declare what is the line between live music... especially since it is apparent that you have not experienced anything other than your own narrow selection of music in SL. Quite simply, its obvious you don't know anything about electronic music... or variations of DJing for that matter... You think ALLLLLL DJing, is picking a prerecorded song and playing it.... well, it's not. Live music can be made without playing a series of notes... you should come check it out sometime. But, because you're close minded, especially without knowing anything about what you're talking about, I'm going to have my own opinion about what live music is... and I encourage anyone who thinks they're making live music to post in live music events: A singer sings karaoke over prerecorded music - LIVE MUSIC A guitar player that plays his part over prerecorded music - LIVE MUSIC A music producer that uses a keyboard, synths, sampler, beat machine, and turntables as their instruments - LIVE FRIGGIN MUSIC (footnote: I'd even go so far as to say that musicians that have made original music, and want to play their recordings as a listening party... this should go in live music too) (second footnote: Demonizer, by your rationalle you've declared performing cover songs is not live music. You've also declared that singers (without an instrument) is not live music.) (third footnote: you pointed out some non-live music events.... Lets take a look at #4.... how do you know it's not live music, did you go? Did you even listen to one second of the music or go to that event that you're prejudging?) (fourth footnote: The only reason the category is called "Live Music" and not "Live Performance" is because I wasn't around to voice my opinion when the live music category was created.)

you need to watch the movie Scratch ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143861/), my friend, before you shove your foot any further into your mouth. If you EVER have a doubt as to whether a Turntablist is an actual musician, I suggest you take a look at a video with DJ Q-Bert, Cut Chemist, Mix Master Mike, DJ Babu, DJ Craze, D-Styles, Peanut Butter Wolf, The X-Ecutioners or dozens and dozens of other AMAZING artists who do things with a turntable that will blow your mind. edited to add: Ohh and for the record, I've been an online DJ for about 4 years and I don't consider what I do even CLOSE to LIVE music, however what I do do is a LIVE playlist. I rarely, if ever have a prearranged set and usually about 90% of what I play is requested from my live listening audience. I'm a down and dirty DJ, yep, I play one song back to back with the next, arrange requests with other tracks to ensure a smooth set, but I rarely, if ever even mess with crossfading, beat matching etc. I will leave that up to the real musician Turntablists. Besides, I never set up any events I am at, the event hosts do that. I'm far too busy doing what 'net DJ's do to worry about collecting votes for contests, spamming about a 'sploder, etc. anyway My 2 cents.

Shout your opinions all you want -- it usually doesn't affect anyone else's opinions or behavior.
Frankly, I agree that a live DJ who simply selects prerecorded music to play is not doing "live music", and I agree that these events shouldn't be in the live music category. Note that I'm not denigrating the skill required of a good DJ! It's an often underrated skill, but we all know that good DJs are highly appreciated.
Going beyond that limited case, the line between live music and recorded music is blurred, and anyone who tries to enforce his or her opinion on everyone else will simply be frustrated by the lack of compliance. So, go ahead, waste your breath -- at least it's amusing.
Trying to draw a precise line between live and recorded music is as fruitless as trying to draw precise lines between genres. Reality is not simple -- even in SL. Trying to force reality into a simple mold is an effort in futility.

My thoughts on a solution: LL should put a separate category for DJ events in the "events listings".
This would benifit BOTH groups, by making those lists come up with fewer returns, thereby making each entry stand out more.
Anybody want to make a proposal?

Anybody want to make a proposal? It could not just read 'DJ event'. It would need to indicate that the DJ was mixing Live and incorporating his own electronic music.

Anybody want to make a proposal? This doesn't work for me cause I don't wanna get clumped into the regular handful of SecondLife DJs I dont think there are anymore subcategories needed.... If the person broadcasting is bringing any original musical element into the show it's live music.

Be prepared to be amazed. NO FADER. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LynXBhWZEzssorry just had to. Q-Bert is a GOD! Yeah, the problem with having a seprate catagory of "DJ Event" is that oftentimes a DJ is there to musically support an existing event and is not the "star of the show" so to speak. Perhaps a checkbox indicator to designate to event browsers that a DJ will be at the event could be feasible? Quite often event hosts/posters do not include the DJ's name and/or information in the event post.

I'm sorry but if a DJ is not playing prerecorded tracks and is actually live, mixing the music themselves, that is LIVE music. The music isn't mixing itsself.

(grabs her old skool raver card and waves it about)
First we have to get our definations straight:
1. DJ - Someone who plays one prerecorded track after another with little or no mixing of the two and who often talks. Think radio DJ.
2. DJ - An ARTIST who takes prerecorded tracks, samples of tracks, live PA, random sounds, noise, pretty well anything you can hear, and MIXES them LIVE into a coherent, endless aural experience with great skill an knowledge, all the while tweaking the level, the pitch, the speed, the bass, the mid, the treble.... you see where I'm going...
Is #1 a live music event? Hell no.
Is #2 a live music event, Hell YES. One that is not seen enough in SL in my opnion too. If anyone knows of LIVE Djs performing in SL I would love a heads up.
Anyone who says that #2 is not a LIVE event is either ignorant of the art of DJing, intolerant to the culture, or just plain stubborm.

You need to add a 3rd catagory to that... 3. Turntablists - Artists who use turntables, records, fader controls etc. to produce unique tracks / performances all their own. The problem becomes defining (if you can at all) how much of X, Y, and Z ingredients are required to move from catagory #1 to catagory #2. IMHO, #1 is considered a "live event" (not live MUSIC) simply due to the fact that tracks are selected and played on the fly in realtime, based on the listeners' requests and not based on a preselected track list. Get back to work you slackers! Arti

I should also clarify: #1 is obvoiusly a 'live' event, there is a living breathing person there plaing tracks. It is not a 'live music' event since the 'performance' part of the evert is prerecorded, there is just somone playing a recording of it. #2 is a 'live music event' as the DJ is 'performing' live.
