Event Posting Rules - What is OK to Post on the Calendar

The event calendar would work fine if people would use it ofr what it is intended for. The problem is not the rules, or the rules being unclear. The problem is inconsiderate idiots who think their business or second life goals or agenda are so important that they start violating the rules and using every expploit possible.

I am so very displeased everytime I look at the events and I see posting after posting of the same old crap over and over again. YES! we know the gambling joints all do Slingo and Zyngo and this go and that go but WHO CARES! The point is YES we al know there is a crappo match going o msomeplace in world at any moment so just walk into any one and there you are! In spite of the arguments they are hosted and are competitions and whatever, they should not be allowed in the free event postings!

Say did I say Free? Well now maybe there is your problem! The fact is the postings we all hate cluttering up the events are from people taking advantage of an exploit! IF its free and they think they can gain advantage from using it then they are going to use it and since there is basically no patrolling, enforcement or action on the part of LInden Labs then the exploitations will continue.

I would highly recommend a pay system for event postings!!

If they want to run that stuf fine but make them pay to advertise it.

The free event calendar should be reserved EXCLUSIVELY for in world activites and EVENTS that are non reccurring and free to the public and are not for the purpose of selling someting or any other sort of commerce including "NEw Mall Opens" or "Land for Sale"! WHO CARES! IF you are running a business then advertise and stop exploiting the community activities PAY FOR YOUR ADVERTISING! Land being for sale is not an event! Houses for rent are not events!

Having said that and being a mall owner and an event promoter in world myself I will ad this about the "Grand Openings" and the "we are giving away a free crapload of Lindens from a sploder" because its easy and it attracts the lowest common denominator of traffic kind of mentality and "live dj" as an event mentality. GET CREATIVE!

IF you want to promote a opening of a new mall then throw a party, have fireworks, a live band, and truely give away some nice prizes! Spend your advetising and marketing budget! Do something FUN!

I am not impressed by having the opportunity to spend my L$ paying a sploder of dancing mindlessly to some so called live DJ that spins a 100 song list of tunes and says hello one in a while. Do any of you club djs out there actually know how to hold or host and event other then it's crazy hat night?

I am a business owner and an event promoter in world and I do fantastic events LIVE! I post these events on the event calendar and when I want to advertise that I have a crapload of new mall space available I RUN A CLASSIFEID AD AND I PAY FOR IT!

I do not think all these things are bad and I don't think they shoul be regulated or banned or any other such thing as I have read some people think all forms of gambling or gaming activities should be. However, all you business owners realtors and casino owners and clubs owners GET OUT OF THE EVENT CALENDAR! Until you can prove you are able to actually have and original idea and learn how to hold and host a live event don't exploit the community by pushing your free advertising on us!!

Finally my comment to the Lindens! Get real about rule enforcement and put in place a pay system tofor all events tat are deemed to be blatant promotions for some commercial activity!

I am going to be an event calendar insurgent until either things change or you finally get tired of me and ban me or suspend my account, but the event calendar is out of control!

Why is it that everytime I open it to see whats going on I get nothing but the screen scrolling of the bottom with SLingo, Tringo, Bingo. wazo, and blaaaahzo? Best in Pink, Black, White, Red, Leather,Lace, Chains, Veins and no brains contests? Or a bunch of crappy clubs with poor design and no imagination either in the space itself or the in entertainment calling a live dj playing oldies or trance or dance or a contest with pants or hair or shoes or blues or wings or blings?

Doesn't anyone get it that these are not "events"? They are unimaginative cloned day after day night after night marketing promotions and they are nothing but leaches sucking up the free advertising made available to them via the event calendar!

MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR blatant repetetive boring traffic generating promotions!

Now before I continue on a serious rant! LOL!

Considering the ridiculous state of the calendar I am still attempting to use it for what I think are legitimate events that will help enrich the variety and quality of the SL residents experience but the filter running on the description window is OUTRAGEOUS and STUPID!

I started with copy I thought would fly but NO! So i edited it over and over again looking for the offending words or phrases but NO!

I would very much appreciate it of you could read the copy and edit it for me so it will make it through that stupid filter! And so I don' waste any more of MY time I will forward you all the copy for every event I intend to post from now on for clearance prior to banging away at the webpage for hours to no avail!

Ok even if the "events" are sretched to fit the definition of an event, just look at all the double, triple, and quadruple postings! And isn't it obvious from the name sof the posters they are using workarounds to circumvent the rules?

The puritanical word-searching function ignores spaces, newlines, punctuation, and word context. For example, if "age" were banned, "stage" would be banned. Also, I believe "ageplay" is banned, which means the phrase "image player" is banned, even if it spans several lines.

I checked your text and nothing stood out... but in general that's what you should be looking for in your troubleshooting if all the words seem okay by themselves.

no matter what can or can't be posted. I just bought a nice new land, and can't post any event there for anything. 3 days ago purchased a 2048 M2. Would like to do a Grand opening event, but i don't get a listing of this property..as i have on other lands i owned.

I don't know what is up with that. Web site glitch? Who knows, because i don't know. But would like to know just the same. Its my property. Would like to post an event of a grand opening.

I know this has probably been said a few times in this tread but I really felt a need to vent frustration at the events calender.

I would also (I saw a few people ask this question) like to see the events calender FINALLY policed. Looking through the events calender has not been just to find a nice event to attend. It has turned into an advertisement dodging experience. For every one event there seems to be an endless about of advertising for stores, camping, you name it. People are not following any of the rules & seem to have become too cheap to buy a classified ad. Why is this? Because...its easy to do. Especially when no one does anything to enforce any of the set rules.

I hate searching the calender for an event because of the ads that completely waste my time to have to weed out. Stop making the rules a joke & start enforcing them.

I agree with the previous posters that the Events calender needs to be enforced. When all you see are multiple postings of the same stupid thing, it gets annoying. Like, seriously, one is enough. At the very least, they should have a separate category for things like store openings and contests, because I know people do look at those things. That being said, it is really a problem because it just fills up the space and buries the really legitimate free events in a sea of advertising. After event after event of shameless advertising, it is really hard to sort out the Book Club's meeting from Get Jiggy's rapper costume contest. I could not agree more that any gambling events DO NOT belong on the free events page. Neither do store sales either. They are NOT events - stores have sales all the time. You don't see people marking on their calender when JCPenny's is going to have a 10% sale on white cotton socks (At least I hope not). As for store openings, I agree it should not be posted unless there is some event that is going on with it (i.e. party and prizes). However, I don't think there should be a fee for posting events because one, those people spamming the events calender will still do it, and two, because it will make it hard for those holding "coffeehouse klatches" to pay for it because it's a free event (thus, no way to get back the money).

As for the poster who's having the problem with getting around the filter, I have no idea why it's not going through. The last description you submitted seemed completely fine, so it seems like the filter needs to be fixed badly, because I don't know many computer filters that would flag that as offensive. I would definitely complain to Linden about that. Not sure how seriously they will take it, but it is a good thing to do in the hopes that other people have complained about it. I hope you can get it all figured out.

Ok, so say there are some really dedicated, possibly insane people who like doing a lot of work for nothing more than each others gratitude, a pat on the back and a warm fuzzy feeling? Finding someone in power to report these abuses to seems a bit problematic. I have been watching the events postings for a few days now .. sending notecards asking for cooperation and filing abuse reports for the blatent repeat offenders. If this tedious task sounds like fun to anybody do IM me or join a group called "Vigilance Committee"

There are a few problems which I understand are not going to be new to the people who have been posting here for sometime .. but

For one thing, filing an abuse report is done on the basis of the offenders name. Well the real offenders in events are not so much the actual posters.. that changes all the time. It's the handful of places that use this method to drum up traffic and get varioius people to do the actual posting of them. I would think if we had say a fine imposed upon the person paying the tier fees for these places - we would see a definate slow down in ads being posted as events .. such as yard sales or mutliple postings that cover the entire day every day of the week but are advertising a store or venue itslef not an event going on there.

One of the other huge problems is a basic disagreement on what should be posted where. I suppose the most commone one being .. the difference in live music and DJs. There are so very many events now that I would think restricting posting to one catagory only UNLESS it is a mixed event.. say DJ playing at an art exhibit or a performance that includes both spoken word and music. Certainly a live music act is also entertainment and also part of the culture but that hardly means it should be posted in all 3 catagories.

Would love anybody's 2 cents worth on this .. especially any linden lurking abouts

now I am all out of types of live performance and havn't come across yard sale or great new skins and fancy clothes at great prices or even free .. yet .. so I am thinking there would be no reason to see one of those in: arts and culture, live music, or entertainment/nightlife

Yes, I can see where many of these would quality for more than one catagory - everything in SL is some form on entertainment isn't it? But with 400+ events in live music and 500+ events in entertainment/nightlife I really think posting in one catagory or another would be common decency - unless it is a mixed event of course such as a music performance AT an art exhbit or a discusion of a work of art .. etc

Well, I've figured out that to make any headway at all with the system as it is
would take too many man hours to be practicle. No wonder the lindens don't
effectively police the thing. So what's the answer?

I think the final fix is no catagories at all but a better search feature
which will require posting be done on a from to make sure all the
required data to make the search work is included. The search also
has to be flexible enough to provide for some fairly odd possible
combinations. If that search engine is due to come out in the
next release GREAT!! If it's going to take longer than that or if
that realease is a very long way off a temporay measure should
be taken.

Adding a new catagory for DJs would help a great deal.
Given the fact that there are 400+ live music posts a day and
600+ entertainment/nightlife posts and extra catagory certainly
seems to be warrented. Another suggestion for a temproary fix is
to make LIVE PERFORMANCES a tab on the same level as EVENTS
is now and put a drop down menu that has catagories correspoinding
to the ones listed in the wiki.

I would also like to see the Places tab revised to include less room for the photo
and more text. The reason for this is I have seen some beautifully written
pieces in notices that are really just ads for a place in general. These are
not for week long sales or week long events that should be placed under
classifiedsbut truely helpful information about the place in general. So why
not just put them in Places as is? Because they are too long to
fit the space provided - and maybe that is why they are a lot more
useful than what one sees in Places now.

A word on the classifieds. I think more people would put their ads
in classifieds instead of trying to pass them off as events if they
didn't have to pay for the ad. Granted 50L isn't much but if you
have a lot of sales it certainly mounts up.

What about the lost revenue to the lindens? I think a fine to the
person paying the tier fees for any site violating the posting rules
would more than make up for it. If you make the wording of the rules
clear and provide a training video on how to use the system and either
require people to view that and agree to it instead of the current
posting rules there will be a lot fewer incorrect posts made out
of ignorance or misintrepetation. Of course a warning should be
issued the first time before a fine is imposed but a fine works
much better as a deterent than suspending and account for
a couple of days.

Yes this will always require a certain amount of watching and
policing, but I think it at least becomes a possible mission.

I was wanting to know how i get my events on the first page of the sl.com Browser. When i go there to place an event, i see a list of events on the first page for that date, before i click the "add event". I have been placing my events one week in advance, and still they do not make it on that screen. My events always show up in the in world search, how ever no matter how early i post my events they never seem to show up on the external website, http://secondlife.com/events/

I was thinking this little problem out a few months ago, i have not used events for a long time now, prefering to use groups instead. But the best method i came up with was to
ban the region from posting based on the owners land owned. f its a private region and paying the tier the the person owning the land is made aware of the abuse of events on there land, and the fact posting rights of events for a set time.

They are based on a physical location already and it seems a good system of they are going to lose rights if the lands are blacklisted. stops alt posting.

Madddyyy, have you proposed this on JIRA? I am so sick of the jerky non-event listings crowding out my occasional educational events.

On the time slot for our event, that I POSTED OVER A WEEK AGO that did NOT SHOW UP, there are 45 ads and 8 had exact repeats! I am really angry this morning.

EVENTS should be just that! What does it take to get my listing to show up anyway???!!!! This is not the first time. We spend a fortune on second Life and this is not acceptable to be treated this way.

I read on this Forum how Lindens are weeding out ads, huh, i see them all over the place, look at anytime slot any day, the EVENTS are loaded with them, how hard is it to weed out ads anyway?

I will put my event in again today, doubt it will make it and will be at least 45 ads in front of it, but at least we will get the little star on the map if it actually can show up!
