Should we, as users, be making a wider fuss about the forum closings? Should we be spreading the story to cnet, slashdot, boingboing, digg, msnbc, etc? Would this exposing of Linden Lab to wider scrutiny do any good? Would it do any good to contact Linden Lab's investors, Globespan Capital, and express our displeasure as a community? Send them a petition, maybe? Am I just dreaming? Here's the contact page for Globespan Capital, if anyone thinks it would be useful to contact them: http://www.globespancapital.com/index.cfm/ContactUs

here's my letter to Globespan Capital
08-12-2006 21:31
I just sent it. Feel free to copy and paste it for your own letter. Maybe if they recieve enough of these letters, they'll get on the phone to Linden Lab and ask what's happening over here. Won't THAT be an interesting conversation. --- snip --- I don't know if it will do any good to contact Globespan with this, but I feel that I should try. I'm writing to express my displeasure, and the displeasure of the online community, with recent management decisions made by one of your investment partners. Linden Lab, creators of the online community SECOND LIFE, ( http://www.secondlife.com) have disappointed a large portion of their customer base by deciding to close the online FORUMS at www.secondlife.com. The FORUMS are an area where customers can communicate with Linden Lab management and with each other. Linden Lab's reasoning is that the FORUMS have become unmanageable and that customer/ management communication will be better served by Linden-run weblogs (BLOGS.) Negative responses to this decision, on the remaining FORUMS, indicate that the customer base disagrees. The BLOG format presents less opportunity for customer / management interaction than the FORUM format. The BLOG format does not allow users to post original questions to Linden Lab, but only to reply to Linden announcements. The BLOG format does not allow direct communication, customer to management or customer to customer. All customer posts on the BLOG can be "HELD FOR MODERATION" and deleted at Linden Lab's discretion, without ever being displayed to other customers or the public. This level of micromanagement rankles customers who signed up with the understanding that they would be treated like mature adults. This removal of the "public square" is a blow to the developing online community that Linden Lab constantly claims to be nurturing. Linden Lab adds insult to insult by claiming that the BLOG format offers the same functionality as the FORUM format. If it is within your power as an investment partner of Linden Lab to question their management decisions, I ask that you contact Linden Lab and question this recent removal of an important community function. Thank you, from an individual customer and from the online community at Second Life. --- snip ---

It's sort of like standing on a cliff watching the sails dip over the horizon knowing I'll never see those people again. Throwing rocks at the water doesn't bring them back; but it somehow makes me feel better.

Sure...make a big fuss. I will.
For example, I'm throwing a forum-death party. When the forums are finally unplugged, I'll be blowing up an effigy of them in-world, passing out cigars and champagne.
That the kind of fuss you meant?
oh, btw...thanks for the addy for Globespan capital. I just sent them a long email about how much I support this decision.

Make sure you also send along a sample of General and Sandbox - say the latest 20 threads from each - to show them exactly what we are all going to be dearly missing. From: Luciftias Neurocam Sure...make a big fuss. I will.

Can I come? I'll bring the party hats.

I think you will be safe with that deal. At least as long as it is in the hands of Phil. If there is a sell out like some speculate (and I hope there isnt) then I am not sure if the new company will have to grandfather that in. I know I bought the lifetime There package and when I go back in after a few months it is always there waiting. If they honor it still with the amount of people who have left, I am sure Linden Labs will be able to as well. At least I hope so for those of you that have them.

All i want is the forums to stay. It's bad enough they have to go... Only thing i can think about doing is taking a snapshot of the forums viewing a post by robbin or another linden discussing how the forums are closing. In photoshop make it look like a corner of it is burned, and upload it into SL setting fire to it with a few turds if thats how you like... The forums will sadly be missed. But theres no going back. Trying to change LL's mind is like teaching a brick wall to dance. O.o

From: paulie Femto Would it do any good to contact Linden Lab's investors, Globespan Capital, and express our displeasure as a community? On the contrary, I think Linden Lab's investors would probably be _pleased_ that the forums are closing. Some of the more difficult topics being broached lately (ageplay, casino legality, poor service levels, IP theft etc) really don't paint SL in a good light.

honestly is it time to sell out and leave
08-14-2006 06:57
I am seriously wondering if it's time to leave SL. I hate the thought, since I do love the game, but am wondering where this is all going.
I just read about them banning someone for something their brother did and taking their money. I find that just outrageous.
They are also closing forums as a way I feel to silence us and keep us from communicating with one another on a grand scale.
They do updates each and every week with bugs running wild. I have not had such bad performance since I don't know when.
Am I the only one thinking this? what do we do to get LL to listen to us to give us back the game we love and to fix it, not make it worse.

On top of that they don't listen to their customers and they allow cyber terrorists to raom the grid causing mayham with NO punishment. Then they punish normal people for nothing... If i still had ANY faith in Ll i would havelost that today. Sure SOME of the lindens are nice, but that doesn't excuse the company's actions. They need to either shape up or ship out. Actions like these cannot just be ignored. They need to be made up for. it's too late to go back and pretend nothing happened. Free Unverified accounts was the first bad idea i saw... Thats what lead into a lot of the other problems. Their also punishing adults by giving us a FREE grid with no CC required, while the teens still have to pay. So where are all the teens gona go? Here! Cuz they arent old enough to have a credit card... I swear LL either lost their minds or they became pure evil.
