in light of recent advances in rocket technology (60 million metre altitude in one second; 500 million metre altitude in 30 minutes) it seems now possible to reach the moon, one anonymous linden lab employee stated "I figured it would take a month at top object speeds to get to the moon - if it was well publicized, I figure there might be some way we could *make* the moon by then."
the race is on! first team to reach the moon wins!

Cool! This is one small step for an avatar... One, giant leap for SL!

any scripted chair in my sim already does it. some go faster then others.

Too bad there can be only attachments beyond 4096m If we want to build a space station at insane height we have to glue each part onto an AV... ... I sense a very special event brewing Hmmm, I can certainly make a "physics-enabled" Multimove, it's just a matter of replacing some lines. Making it work as attachment would be trivial, too. It could be fun to synchronize the movement of 20 persons in the air, all wearing a large part of an even larger build, high in the air Wait, make that 8 large parts of an even larger build, after all we can have attachments up to 32m large, and attach on all sides of the AV... [Edit] Yes I know that the whole thing would be phantom, but it'd still be funny

WOOT! GO JAUANI! Make those Lindens code up a moon for us, this world desperately needs something fresh to keep its juices flowing... where the heck is Magellan when you need him?

Late June, 1969: Philip God to Angel Linden: Awww crap! They're gonna do it. k - this is what I need - get rid of the billboard; I need you to make a real moon - and you've got a month to do it.
Oh, and btw, while you're at it - can you fix that reflection. Dunno what I was thinking at the time.

From: Annah Zamboni "Houston, the eagle has lagged." Have you seen any documentaries on the original moonlanding? The Eagle's computers were so slow, it did indeed have lag.

And I missed it ? Awww... Anyway, I went and wrote the necessary scripts. I'll see if Torley is interested

maybe my math is wrong, but.... 500 million meters in 30 minutes? The moon's average distance from the Earth is 384,000 KM. This is 384,000,000 Meters. Based on what you're saying, an object that go 500 million meters in 30 minutes could reach the moon in... 23 minutes. 23 minutes seems a little different than a month... My jet pack script seems to move at a maximum speed of around 60 meters/sec. that's about 216000 Meters in one hour. This is 5184KM in one day. 384,000 / 5184 = 74.07. I'm not saying that my jetpack is the pinnacle of technology... I have simply been experimenting with it. (I'm not comparing it to a 100 million meter per hour rocket. ) Now I'm curious. but here's something I really don't understand. The same script, in different objects, will give my avatar different flight speeds. Can anybody clue me in to why that is??? These are all attachments on the avatar, not vehicles, and it seems that single-prim objects are slower than multi-prim objects. <edit> ahh, it seems that the number of prims makes a difference. I just linked 9 plywood wings to my single-prim "flight belt", and suddenly I'm travelling at 250 meters/sec. Is this an "energy" thing?

hmm... seems to be a hard cap at 250 meters/sec. Has anybody else noticed this? This means that an avatar wearing a flight attachment can do the trip in roughly 18 days.

Energy. Look it up on the wiki Supposedly max speed is 256 m/s , but it has been found that by combining different functions, and triggering them simultaneously, you can greatly exceed it.

That explains it. Energy is determined by the mass of all the prims and consumed based on the mass of the whole linked object...
but attachments to an avatar don't actually "weigh" anything, but they do give energy
so by creating an attachment that's slightly larger than the avatar itself, I give it enough energy to move a the 250 m/s limit.
COOL!

I have an X belt that can do 400 meters a second. EDIT: I just performed a test with the belt at setting 450 and the best I got was 95 Meters/Second and that was not sustained it bounced between 42M/S and 95M/S

A linden (I think Ben) said that they will have built a moon before anyone could possibly reach so high as to reach it. Seems Lucy has some 'splainin to do SIggy.

If anyone has any items that I can use to test this, I can let my SL run all day with a macro from my comp and it won't go idle. If anyone wants to give me something to use, I will try it. I have gotten to 5 million meters with (many many, pics) a previous attachment, but I think whatever someone else gives me would be better. Edit: If anyone would like a "journal" of my status in space, please IM me and I'll give you the note with the pics.

I think it would be fun to make a little rocket ship attachment... then you could set it to go, go go!!! So if the moon is 384,000 kilometers, that's 384 million meters, right? You have an account that can run unattended for 17 days? I'd love to see this! The first SL Space Marathon Race!! I'm curious: can you "mark home" as high as you want? We could do this a little at a time by marking home before we log off... then coming back the next day to our new home location and continuing upward. Maybe we could have a true "Space Race": the first person to the moon without macroing would get the prize.

Ok, noone is going to believe me, so here are the .bmps from my screen captures: http://zigital.net/1billion.zip 1.32MB download These are HUGE un-edited pics, and there's not too much to see, really. But the # in the bottom right, above the Inventory button, is my height. And you can see my clock only changed by 1 minute between those 2 pics. 1 billion meters in less than a minute. I'm not reaching anything near full power yet either. The sims keep having a whiny fit and desyncing me.
