The GNUbie store has some items for L$1 or free and they are high quality. Funnily enough that's the only place you can find men's clothing by me :p. As far as Neph and Hosequeen's skins, those are high quality skins, they're made to be ragdoll or doll like skins, not realistic.

I want to clarify something I said earlier in this thread. Hosequeen is one of the best (as well as nicest) merchants in SL. Her low-priced skins are of a very good quality, and my comments were never intended to impugne her products.

I <3 Hosequeen. She is responsible for much of my precious inventory bloat! :)

Brace is TEH HAWT.

We have a full catalog of free or L$1 content on SLBoutique as well, generously donated by our wonderful content creators (we give discounts for people who provide freebies). You can find them here:

Enjoy!

Brace's $L1 avatars are great -- I just took a newbie over to the NCI plaza a few days ago to get started cluttering her inventory.

PixelSpa and HoseQueen both offer skins (both genders) in the $250-350L range, and they're not too shabby for the price. Buyers have to realize that they're not getting the same fine quality as they would with a skin priced at over $1000L, of course.

Price is not always a reflection of quality. As Torrid stated, the skins created by both Nephilaine and me are not intended to be realistic, photosourced skins, but that doesn't mean they're of a lesser quality. They were intended to have a hand drawn, doll-like look. It's simply a matter of individual preference, not of quality. My skins are by no means perfect, but I try very hard to always produce quality products, at reasonable prices. I have purchased a lot of skins, many for over 1k, and some were very poor quality. My most favorite skin I've purchased was Neph's, for only $250L, so I don't buy into the whole "you get what you pay for" belief.

Skins drastically change the look of an avatar, and although you may like how the skin looks on the box cover, or on another avatar, you might not like it on your own av. Most skin makers provide demos - my advice is to test as many as possible before making a decision, because they're usually no-transfer and non-refundable.

Sorry to derail the thread - I know it was intended to be about sources for newbies, but I felt I needed to address this issue.

Hosequeen, thank you for speaking up. I'm sorry if my choice of words made it sound like your skins weren't of good quality. As I told you in IMs last night, I consider you to be one of the top designers in SL (I know, I own a bunch!). And thank you very much for offering low-priced skins. I'm giving landmarks to all the newbies I meet :)

I know Cindy, and I debated whether or not to address this in the forums or not, since I had spoken with you via IM's last night. But I decided since it was initially posted in the public forum, I should respond in the same manner. I do appreciate you taking the time to chat with me about it last night :)

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I'd like to add that Hosequeen has generously offered a new line of skins for newbies -- her usual high quality stuff, now to be found at some of the newbie spots like The Shelter and GNUbie Center.

All hail to Hosequeen! Anything we can do to make SL more comfortable and welcoming to new people is going to help enrich our world. Thank you, HQ :)

Hey! What's wrong with the default skins? They're fiiiine. A default skin made me the man I am today.

They are completely modifyable and are available at the New Citizens Inc. (NCI) for 1L each.

I just want to say thanks for mentioning this place. I started an account back in march, but only logged in once to see if it worked then. I figured I'd get back to it and go through the tutorials when I had a bit more time. Well, I finally decided I had the time a bit over a week ago. Somehow I skipped the tutorials and wound up in a casino knowing nothing at all. Since I've been kind of wandering a bit and discovering things as I go. I have to say I've found the SL population to be amazingly helpful and friendly over all. But NCI is just awesome, the information available there is just astounding.

Thanks,

Halsey

Call me shallow. But I'd never marry a girl who was wearing free hair and skins. I want a girl who is worth a million dollars, Linden dollars.

You /hypocrite/!

If I have a skin and want to change the head tattoo... is there any way to mix and match the tattoo from another skin without actually having the texture?

If you're trying to use an opaque head tattoo (makeup sold for use with a specific skin), there is really no hope that you'll ever get a match.

If you're using a semitransparent head tattoo ("universal" makeup, such as the stuff that Lisbeth Cohen used to sell), your skin color is determined by the appearance sliders. There is no automatic way to match the skin, but you can experiment until you get a good visual match. That's the combination that I use most of the time; I had a skin made for me in a color I really love, but I didn't like the makeup that came with it. But it was easy, because I already KNEW the appearance slider specs of my skin color.

(For making a PRIM that matches the color of something, there is a good shortcut that gets you in the right neighborhood; take a screenshot with the item you want to match visible, open the screenshot with your favorite graphic editor, and use the eyedropper tool to get the RGB specs. You'll usually have to tweak it a bit, because the colors you see onscreen in SL don't perfectly match their RGB specifications, and vary with lighting and time of day. (extra bonus hint: change the brightness level in the HSB values until you get a perfect match.) But this method doesn't work for skin, where the appearance sliders aren't RGB.)

Warning: if you have a no-copy skin, any attempt to replace the head tattoo is permanent. You can't get the old one back. If you have a copy/mod skin (which is probably no-transfer, but that doesn't matter here), make a copy before you do this sort of thing. If you've got a no-mod skin, none of this applies; you can't change the head tattoo to begin with.

I'm a Wolf and do not have a human av except a goth skin i once purchased. Il look around in these places suggested, though i prefer my wolf form. A human alternative would be nice if i encounter a store i want to buy something from and its inside a gorean sim... Even a goth might be unwanted their for all i know. :/

BUT... Anyone trying to inslave me will find out im a wolf pretty soon when i rip the cage apart and pounce them. :)

My skins sell individually for L$250 also.

Hmmm. Seems like there's quite a demand for freebie skins. Maybe I'll whip something up that's non-anatomically correct and distribute it for free. I need a break from working on SKIN 2.0... I can't draw the naughty bits without photo reference and I don't particularly WANT that on my computer. LOL. (Or I could sit with a mirror, I guess, heh.)

EDITED TO SAY: I am working on a freebie skin right now with built-in underwear bottoms that's semi-opaque. Is it going to hurt other skin makers if I do release a free high-quality skin? I'm scared it might hurt my own sales, heh.
