Tell me which part you disagree with so I know where you're going. No disagreements! I am interested in this subject and I have not read any journals that have made this sort of claim, so I would like to read this one. The terms you used , "in RL there are statistical correlations between appearance and intelligence", suggested to me it was from research that is why I'm interested. |

In real life you have limited control over what your body looks like, so one should be less incllined to "judge a book by its cover". Unless you obvioulsy have gone to some pains to decorate that cover in a certain way, then its legitimate to judge it.
In SL you can make your AV look like anything you want. So when you have obviously modified the AV to look a certain way, you ARE making a statement about who your are or want to be. And it is completely legitimate for people to respond to that statement. If you present yourself to be something or someone that I find distasteful, then yes I will assume certain distasteful things about you as well. _____________________

Are these ok? ![]() Before we can answer that you need to show a side picture so that we can verify that they are not in fact wearing mullets. _____________________

I think it might be in the same issue as "People who eat more tend to be fatter." ![]() If there is something specific you wanted to know, perhaps I could help you out. Did you want to discuss how breast size correlates to SAT scores? Or weigh the percentage of Nobel Prize winners who have tattoos vs. the general population? |

Before we can answer that you need to show a side picture so that we can verify that they are not in fact wearing mullets. Er, what's the thing with the mullets? The shoulders look fine even with a bald avatar. The only distortion I see is that inner tips of the shoulder blades jut out just a tiny bit more than they would in reality, but not much. You can check out the shoulders in 3D. Just punch in the numbers I supplied. The neck , chest , and abdominal areas can be easily adjusted to taste. |

Well my avi shape is largely the byproduct of not really knowing how the numbers worked, so i sort of picked proportions randomly. The face has been a combination of taking some suggestions I agreed with and refusing to take others. MY avi is not handsome really, but he does capture how I feel.

It shouldn't be black or white. Just becuz you're av is pretty, you have a fragile ego? But if your av is normal, imperfect, whatever, you have more confidence in yourself? That's bullcrap. And I'd hate to be pigeon-holed into one category or the other.
We're all a little insecure, and a little vain. I won't deny I am self-conscious about my looks in RL. There are days I feel pretty, days I just want to wear a paper bag on my head, and days when I don't even care. But it's normal to analyze yourself like that. So what. Some other girl isn't going to be smarter or better than me just becuz her breasts are smaller than mine. A woman isn't a hootchie just becuz she opts for the blonde and not the brunette wig. It's just as baseless to say everyone who hates coffee hates sex, while people who like sushi are bisexual. I can only think we like to form parallelisms like this becuz we're bored. And it's easier to make snap judgments about people we don't know about rather then getting to know that actual person. If anything, it should just be something to snicker around with like-minded friends. But once it crosses over to actively judging people and dismissing them using this perspective, then people have become just as shallow as those "barbies and barbarians" they've thumbed their noses at. Just my thoughts. _____________________

Some other girl isn't going to be smarter or better than me just becuz her breasts are smaller than mine.QUOTE] I quoted that cause, it describes my psyche today.....I'm feeling really dumb, so it must be my bra size... My avie was described as 'eye-candy' most recently by a SL neighbor, which honestly I got a kick out of and so did my boyfriend (k, he is most decidely secure with himself and us) however even though she is designed to be esthetically pleasing to the eye, it doesn't mean she's a hop-bed, or even remotely interested in it. Somewhat like the bag over the head comments, this is why my avie came to be. She doesn't have bad hair days.... (well, except for the frequent public display of box on the head moves), her clothes are on target and if not, she can switch them in the back aisle at Panache, or the front window for that matter. One of my only passions in SL so far (aside from being seriously addicted to shopping, and lots of it) is dance. Why? I'd love to say its because I'm an exotic dancer IRL, however its because I am NOT one. I have serious white girl rhythm, and am shy as all hell-o when faced with having to dance in front of people but I have a dancer's soul. One of my modes of expression in any game that has been possible in the past has been my ability to express myself through dance. So far I lack the technical skills in Poser, but durn it I'm learning...and will continue until I can produce what I feel inside here in SL. So why judge on what the avie looks like? This is, as we are reminded time and time again, our fantasy life. Live it. |

And it is completely legitimate for people to respond to that statement. This is true, but it's not quite true that you can make your AV look like anything you want - there are some limits on availability and the amount of money available! ![]() Perhaps the reason why is that if people in SL didn't judge each other by appearance it would seriously damage the economy? ![]() |

So far I lack the technical skills in Poser, but durn it I'm learning... A little OT: But have you tried Avimator? http://www.avimator.com It's a free animation program that is like Poser, but with all the extra stuff that doens't apply to SL taken out. Just thought I'd Mention it if you're having troubles with Poser. _____________________

A little OT: But have you tried Avimator? Actually i have both of the programs and the reason i moved to Poser was my hope to make a dance that isn't 'in place'...but maybe i should tackle the least complex first, my bf keeps telling me i'm taking on projects that are too big for a novice (He does graphics for a living), but hey, i have the best tutor in the world with me so why not!? ( sorry as well for the OT but ty for the question in regards to the same) ![]() |

As I suspected, you were just baiting me and wasting my time. If you wish to go on record with a definitive statement of your own regarding appearance and intelligence, please do. I hope it is not just the opposite of what I said as that is quite easily proven to be incorrect (except in the political sense). |
