What will it be like if we get the million users Philip wants?
Will we have a much higher ratio of spectator users to creator and investor users?
Will the huge number of textures that are generated somewhat needlessly as people keep uploading , for example, the same wood textures over and over from google images, bog the system down to a much greater level of bogginess than we can readily conceive of?
With a million users, will that insure that there will always be a supply of griefers sufficient to ruin your SL day?
When we have a million users, will we still be limited to 40 or 50 avatars per sim?
How long with it take to do a region name lookup on the map with enough sims to hold a million avatars?
When you do Find People with a million users will we still only get a hundred i names n the results when there might be a hundred thousand or more that match ?
How many IMs will Enabran get asking about SLboutique when we have a million users?
Will the third party sites be able to handle the load?
What will a million users or more do to Second Life?

we will have 4 times the users, and 4 times the people online - so maybe 10,000 online?

I doubt the number of regular users will scale with the accounts created. One millions users, 3500-4500 online consistently - unless certain features and performance factors are changed. Changing SL from a giant shopping theme park for bt's, progs & ga's might be a new direction.

Well if the influx of stupid obnoxious people keeps increasing I will likley never leave my skybox and/or talk to anyone with accounts created after 2005.

The heat of all the billions of bling effects playing at once in SL when combined with the mass of metallic spike attachments on the million residents will result in an implosion of the servers, creating a neutron star at LL from which all life on Earth will be consumed as we are sucked into the event horizon to out ultimate fates.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Will the huge number of textures that are generated somewhat needlessly as people keep uploading , for example, the same wood textures over and over from google images, bog the system down to a much greater level of bogginess than we can readily conceive of? Hmmm... interesting. I wonder if some kind of hash system could be developed for textures, and when someone uploads a texture that is identical -- 100% identical -- to one already in the hash database, the new texture isn't really uploaded, but just linked to the original texture, thus saving system resources and drive space?

*Prepares for the Armageddon and dons her tinfoil cap* I knew it! I just knew it! I try to find a pleasant peaceful way to spend my time and stay out of trouble and just what does it turn out to do??... Destroy all life on earth, that's what, which just might be all life in the universe, leaving a lifeless universe like a big dead giant robotic machine that gets to live forever but has no heart or soul or feeling , cold and icy and always alone, emptiness, bleakness, everywhere, forever ... and it's all Linden Lab's fault! Those concerned over this issue should send email expressing their views to support@secondlife.com .

You must have misunderstood me; I asked how it might be in the future, not how it's been for the past year. Also, how'd you get access to my snapshot folder?

The group chat in open join groups - say there was four times as much chat. That might get pretty annoying.
Flip describes having no privacy now, says he needs to have privacy settings like AIM and other chatrooms have, and lots of people agree. . Four times as many people, four times as many customers, will increase this sort of problem, won't it?
Heh, who got the most alts since the new policy went into effect?

And diff styles in al kind of things... as designes, clothes, animations! (we move different).. and I hope that we not live in gettos of sims where there are no integration between diff people at al... The day we AL know different cultures - we will become more sympathetic to AL.. and also be able to make a better world.. Think of an inv filed with 192 flags.. from start ) /Tina - Dream of EXAKT peace and love.

What will a million users or more do to Second Life? Users, or accounts? I'm sure that we're going to hit one million "accounts" in less than a year. At whcih point I think that we may see as many as...oh...8,000 individual *users* who actually long in to the game. I've heard that supposedly LL is finally starting to work on new group tools and IM tools, which will definitely be needed as LL starts to get bigger. As to griefers, if SL is to survive, LL is actually going to *have* to delegate people to spend their time in-world to deal with griefers. Some sort of *active* *realtime* TOS enforcement is going to *have* to happen or SL flat out will *not* reach one million actual users. To atract 1M users, LL is also going to *have* to start catering to people who want to use SL for real life, no-anoymous business, comunication, and social purposes. That means being able to use real names, to use voice, to have ways to prove that you are actually *you*, etc. RP will become a portion of SL, not the whole thing. I honestly think that there's only just so much of a market for anymous, make it up as you go yourself, typed text role-playing, and I seriously doubt if they're going to get a million users with just that. Better integration to the rest of the Internet. Fortunately, LL seems to finally be tackling that by introducing Firefox in a way that it can be used in game. Better tools for finding your way around SL will be a must. The map is throughly inadequet at this point, particularly for islands. Something like a database of islands and sims that you can explore, almost certainly through the web interface, will be a necessity. (Personally, I'd like to see a feature that when you mouse over an island, you can click to get a very short description of the island, what it is and what it's *for*.) So will "portals" (With the long promised and never delivered "Teleport object" command.) that will allow you to build virtual roads and networks not constrained by SL's 2-dimensional model of physical space. Actually, a lot of the place hanging together at larger sizes is going to depend on ways of managing data, which is why, I think, they've finally made some bady steps to introduce HTML to SL.

I didn't mean to imply that everyone created after 2005 is stupid and obnoxious, but the percentage is going up and we are only at 250,000 by the time we get to 1million... i shudder to think.

*looks at the endless landscape of disappearing prims and half-rezzed textures* Oooohh... 1mil is going to bring... *looks at the future, disappearing people while wear prims, and textures giving up long before they can rezz* Less cluttered?
And they will finally change the asset server from the Texas Instruments 80 to at least a gameboy advanced.

This time next year: * We will still be waiting on the enhanced privacy features while we twiddle with our fancy new flex prims. * Lag will be so bad that flying is no longer practical, red fences or not. Everyone will walk because TP will break just like it did last summer. * You will still not be able to use no copy/no trans animations in your custom gestures - a feature that was purposely broken over a year ago as a workaround to an exploit. * Our inventory will still lose folders and re-sort itself at the worst moments. * Instead of a few prims disappearing here and there, we will see entire builds disappear, including Linden Labs. Don't worry, they've only gone to another dimension. * Tringo and Slingo will be old hat. A new game will arise, called "Jingo" which involves political trivia.

Not sure this is what you had in mind Jack, but figured you might want to take a look: http://slhandbook.com/regionmap.asp I'm hoping with further mapping and database work along with the guides planned that this sort of exploration will be fun and easy!

Think of the best night you've ever had in bed. Multiply that by a billion. You're still not close to how it'll be like.
