You will find people with strong opinions about each of these environments. I played There for some time before coming to SL.

There are some aspects which I miss. I miss vehicles that work. I have several and used them to travel all over.

I miss not having to deal with sim boundaries. The world there feels like one contiguous space .. no boundary crossing issues.

I miss the clear landscapes. Most of the world you can't just drop goods out of your inventory. If you can do anything you can drop a zone, into which you can add other things. Keeps the landscape a little less cluttered.

On the other hand I love building in SL, and its much easier here. I love the random wildness of the mainland.

Its hard to do a comparison ... each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Just like most things ... the two are different, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. And each worth exploring and arriving at your own conclusions.

Have fun :)

was a beta-tester in There and played it for probably a year and a half before coming to SL on a regular basis.

Creating a new object in There takes approval, which is over a week. I knew someone who was waiting for something to get approved for *over a year*.

Other than awesome vehicles like buggies, and MAYBE voicechat if you're into that kind of thing, There doesn't have a whole lot to offer. The pets are cute, though, and so is paintballing.

They have forcefields now though, which is sad. It was fun to run over a bunch of people and send them rolling down the hill in an awesome display of ragdoll physics. BWEHEHE!

I think there are benefits to both. If you're that curious, try it! But be warned: it's very expensive to buy clothes.

You can't hug in There, which is why I'm here instead.

In There, I owned a buggy and a spare shirt. In SL I have 3 years of crap in my inventory and over 9000m of real estate. :D

I will give There credit for better vehicle physics. There also is playable over dial-up. The downside is that you must use Internet Explorer to play.

Yeah, I suck at web stuff. I've removed the link until I figure out why no one besides me can get to that page.

Edited to add: Ok, apparently Blogger doesn't like it when I try to change the orginal URL to something I like better. The blog entry talks about There, and can be found at http://notasecondtoosoon.blogspot.com/.

I tried THERE a while ago. Anything you wanted- clothes, vehicles, etc- seemed to cost real money. Everything was charged to a credit card. And unlike SL, THERE's water was just another surface to walk across. Dont know if anything changed, but for now I'm hooked on SL.

LOL ... I'd forgotten about the concrete water *giggle*!!

I check into There often enough to make sure the rent is paid on my house .. hate the idea of giving it up.

And I check into TSO once in a while to find out how old I am and how many skill points I have, LOL. 1300 days and 75 skill points last time I checked.

Did beta in TSO and There .. sorry I missed Beta here, but everyone told me it was too hard :(

Ah well, that is why I dont listen to anyone anymore, LOL.

SL Rocks!!!

both platforms have there good and bad qualities

and your choice on witch or both you should inhabit is a very personal one that would depend on what you personally like to do.

I for one was in there for a year and a half and I enjoyed my time there very much but then I found Second Life and have not been back since except to visit friends once and a while and they come here once and a while to come say hi to me.

some observations
building sucks in there you can't just whip out some shapes and build your self a house you have to buy it and the shape is not changeable. if you want to build anything you need to use an external 3d program and then submit your items for approval paying a hefty fee. designing clothing is very expensive also you have to submit a design for APROVIAL and pay a fee to there.

there is strictly pg

the vehicles in there are awesome as far as performance is concerned.

socializing in there is not any better or worse then second life except in there they have voice that i really wish we had in second life. but in SL we have many more customisable gestures.

over all for me second life is far superior and I like it here much better.
there are only 3 things i really miss in there 1 my friend Vmcl she is and awesome gal and a really good human being 2 the vehicles i miss driving my buggies. 3 voice chat I love to voice chat much more then type chat being my typing sucks Ass and would be lost with out a spell check just to get all the typos

My partner and I immigrated from There to SL last November, after approx 2 years in the game. At the time we were both really bored with the place and I was feeling very frustrated with a lot of things about There too. When we 1st landed here, we were so amazed and felt liberated. It's one reason we both chose the SL surname "Liberty"!
Below are the positives and negatives of there.com as I see them:

Positives: *The buggy physics are fantastic! They acted like a real car and even bounced on their suspension. It's the one thing I wish for in SL from There.

* Voice chat was rather cool. It felt more personal and warm, and I hate typing/typos anyway!

*There are some great user made mods for There.

Erm, that's about it....

Negatives: *There is very much PG throughout it's meta universe. This means absolutely nothing that is in the slightests bit adult and as a result I felt as if i was treated as a kid! Also the teens mix with the adults. Not good! Some teens were cool, but far too many were just jack asses that needed to be dealt with every 5 minutes. If you check out Theres forums you will see it littered with anti teen posts!

*Building and creating anything was a real hassle, took forever, was subject to strict PG guidlines and costs a small ransom. Very limited too. For example, you are not able to make a new car shape, you have to use the single, solidtary buggy shape to paint and that's your lot. You paint the model outside the game, then you submit it to There. You pay a submission cost. If approved (and it was by no means assured it would be) You get your buggy up to 2 weeks later. You wanna sell it now, so you advertise in There's auction pages, you pay a fee. You sell a buggy, but you have to *buy* a copy of your own work at *whole sale* then you get Taxed on the sale you just made! I can feel my blood pressure rise just thnking about it! LOL

Nothing ever changes in There! To me and I know to many others in There, the staff running There seem to never listen to it's customers. Things change in There at a very slow rate and the features that do come out seem to be for the staffs benefit mainly, not the players.

There staff are a right stiff bunch! The Lindens are lovely in comparrison! End result is you get a section of the membership who kiss There staff butt to get their own way, and others like me who rebelled against the *I'm better than you* attitude of There staff. End result is a divided population.

There live help? What live help? lol

There is very limited as far as violence goes. This prolly sounds great to a lot of you, but with consent it's fun to shoot each other in SL! There is also no sex at all. The nearest you get is a sitting kiss gesture and that's it!

There are no flexi prims, no HW lighting, no chance of making your own gestures. There felt to be very controlled, to the point I was feeling stifled.

In a nutshell, you pay through the nose for just about anything you wanna do, and there isn't much you can do! I own enough crap in There that if I sold it all off, I am pretty sure I could buy an island in SL with the money made. We desperately want an island, but neither my SL wife or I want to go through all the hassle and expence we know would happen to get there, in There!

SL is a true free world, and we love it very much.

There: Whiney pre-teens on the microphone using "big people talk" because the child's sperm and egg donor decided to hire PlayStation and Must See TV as babysitters.

Second Life: Ever feel like flipping someone the bird?

I also used to play in There (as Flossy) and have a Life Membership, so I sometimes go back when SL is down. I loved the buggies too, and the pets were wonderful. I also liked the built-in voice option, but I often use Skype here anyway. Overall, though, I do prefer SL and have been here for over 2 years now. :)

Vehicles Rock in There! I loved flipping a buggy off a cliff and when it turned upside down, scraping noises included, I called it getting exfoliated. ;-p

Being able to drive from place to place (or hover-pack -boat -board -bike) over the "big blue concrete" was cool, folks even drove all the way around the world. Think of being able to drive from the mainland to any private sim and to the next sim, etc.

The avie appearances are decidedly limited in comparison. No such thing as prim attachments to make robots, furries, jewelry, etc. As awful as the skirt mesh stretch is on skirts in SL, it's miles beyond having to fake a skirt w/the pants. YES I know there are minis in There, but long skirts appear to be problematic in both worlds, flexi-prims offering a new better option,, certainly.

The built-in emotes are fun and silly but operate from a fixed set. The avies built-in naturalistic behaviors are much better than SL's system set, but are comparable with better AO sets. However, those built-in behaviors do react to vocal tone and/or text cues to make the avie smile, frown, gesture, etc. dependant upon what you're saying and how you're saying it. Truly impressive.

The world There is very pretty, much more open spaces, parkland if you will. Rental homes/spaces are much more limited than SL and probably still more expensive, I've not checked pricing in a long time. All the commentary above about building and designing is right on the money. You have to spend a good bit of cash to find out if your stuff will sell. Here one could conceivably put something to market for zero USD as soon as it is completed. Much easier on the fledgeling designer, much more flexibility, and 100% freedom.

There is kinda like Disney, SL is kinda like RL. One has rules, is very neat and clean and PG and runs (in certain aspects) smoothly. The other is a lil dangerous/naughty, offers everything for those willing to put something of themselves into it and is nominally regulated.

It's really a matter of what you want. I left There shortly after Black Friday, looking for a new VR world to make my online home, looked at a buncha places, ended up here. I had been into SL a few times months before but it didn't take.
