Some choice quotes from Steiger:

- next month LL will allow "anyone to become their own Linden Lab"

- Linden Lab didn't expect/predict the business opportunities/usage in SL
- 3,000 people are making about $20k each on average annually
- how do we punish griefers if we can't take away their money

- "GOMming" became a verb to describe LL blowing away a resident-run operations

Check it out.

In the day I had a verb too - but I was so much older then, I'm younger then that now!

What exactly does that refer to?

IANAL (I am not a linden), but I think it refers to the idea of letting people sell parcels on the private islands via a similar functionality that exists on the mainland and/or more of a private label experience.

"next month LL will allow "anyone to become their own Linden Lab"

Wonder what this means.

Also, from reading it, it seems like there will be big businesses coming into SL sooner rather than later, and whoever is positioned on the Developer Directory now will benefit.

- LL has a few cardinal rules. one is that we will not compete with our residents. Gaming Open Market (GOM) was a case where they were taking a 3% cut of transactions. when they started, transactions were infrequent and in small amounts... late last year the volume was $100k per day... the bind we were in was that these two guys (GOM) weren't making the service trustworth and work well... we tried to buy them... our final recourse was to introduce a competing product

Coming from Reuben, I fully expect it just means the tiny little estate features they added in 1.9 ;)

Well, the whole "can't process transactions till we get the baby down" doesn't exactly scream "real business".

Heheh. You guys are missing something rather devistating that just happened here, and I feel very very badly for Reuben, cause he was probably surprised by the question and forgot that he works for a company with a millions in assets that just became terribly liable for his loose lips. youuuuch

I thought GOM worked great and I completely trusted them. I suspect most others did as well.

That article contains misleading content.

For example "sex industry is an extension of the real world sex business in some cases, SL fees are sometimes close to real world prices". ROTFL. Inworld prices. in U$. are about 1-3% of real world prices. (Comparing the Barbie Club to eros.com or ifriends.net)

"Wells Fargo paid $30000 for Stagecoach Island", and then abandoned it. Real world companies don't abandon $30k projects lightly - especially when it means spending more money elsewhere for the same thing.

"next month LL will allow "anyone to become their own Linden Lab", this may be the now ended bulk land sales experiment?

Yes, I think if you count the number of day traders that worked on GOM as compared to working on Lindex, I think you'll find most day traders trusted GOM over the Lindex.

a millions in assets

What assets? Some servers? LOL Which they probably lease. Software they can't get to work? Their assets are like most dot coms built on a dream and stupidity of people who buy into the dream.

That never happened. I was in charge of processing transaction, don't have any kids, and (excepting the time after we closed down) you could probably count on your hands the number of times in 2.5 years that it took more than 24 hours for a GOM client to receive their money.

No, the least trustworthy link in the PayPal <-> GOM <-> Second Life chain was most assuredly *not* us.

Count me in as one of the suspects. My experiences with GOM were all very positive. I enjoyed using their service and also trusted them.

Holy shit this kind of shit is what make me laugh at LL. No fucking wonder they have to 'give' away accounts. What a fucking farce. *shits watermelon seeds all over the thread*

I personally never had a problem with you service and I used it since you used to trade in many games. I have also never had an issue with Paypal and I have been with them since XBank.

Obviously LL saw a lot of money changing hands and wanted a piece of the pie.

Now, back to the scheduled Linden hatefest.

I don't know why Reuben would say such a thing about GOM. First off, as far as I ever could tell, it simply isn't true. You might as well say that you can't trust LL because on a few rare occasions since I have been here the grid has been down.

Secondly, isn't that kind of slanderous? And they are saying it (well, Reuben said it) regarding their own residents here.

There is LL changing the system in a way that screws up existing businesses; there is LL actually going into a business themselves to compete with an existing business; and there is LL talking trash about their own residents. They are all injuries, but that last adds insult to injury, it would seem to me.
