Wouldn't it be nice to have a Virtual Reality Headset fully integrated with SL?

Anybody using one or something similar with SL or any other game?

Forget about headsets! Sony was just recently granted a series of patents for a technology that uses ultrasonic energy to manipulate how nerves in the sensory cortex fire, thus theoretically creating a non-invasive way to "jack in" to VR.

I'm going to hold out for that. Um..but..I don't think I'm going to go with my usual, early adopting ways. Unless the technology accidentally grants you "Scanners" type powers, in which I case, hook me up immediately maestro!

IM lucid vindaloo. He's got a group going looking after this and knows a fair amount about this stuff.

I have an old pair of LCD shutter glasses, I pulled them out and did get them to work with Secondlife back when I first started here. It was great, except for the fact that the glasses suck and I had a headache and eyestrain after about 20 minutes of using them. Can't wait until I have the money and time to try something like Tito posts. :o

How is something that will remotely control your brain non-invasive? LOL

Well you could always use Track IR. SL doesn't have to natively support it because you can use the track ir to emulate mouse movement. Now of course if SL fully supported the "Enhanced" mode.. you could walk around with your mouse and keyboard and use your head to look around.

I have the Track IR 3 Pro and it's great for games that support its enhanced mode... really brings the games to life.

/me sighs....

Forget headsets I want the whole full bodysuit dealy like in that movie Lawn Mower Man - I thought we'd have all that goin on by now. I think the US Armed Services bought all that stuff out in the 80's or NASA or someone.

But I'm not QUITE ready to jack my brain directly into SL hehehe - but a headset would be a cool place to start :)

Yah I know detected kay aint right but, I forget what the real command is right now lol.

VR-type immersion in SL? Yikes.. Some people can't even use Mouselook without getting nauseous(sp?).. o.o But on the other hand, more immersion would be cool for those of us that don't get vertigo from a digital image. The headset thing seems kinda uncomfortable, though..

Well, it's a lot less invasion than having your cranium popped open and 'trodes placed on your brain, now ain't it? :D

And I'd get so much exercise if I actually had to lift the prims.

I'd like to try the virtural headset like the guy in the picture. One question- do they only work on severed heads? ;)

Seriously, that'd be way cool.
While I'm at it, I'd love an excercise treadmill with a VR headset, so it would seem like you were walking/running through a computer generated environment. Way more interesting than walking in place (or around the block for the millionth time)

Good Idea bad concept...you become more likey to headacks dizziness etc. This is a fact why? Some people have rapid eye movement which causes one have motionsickness and feel light headed. As one poster said Sony tried and failed inthe most part and so panasonic, etc. Great concept! but real world long term useage its not a good idea for most.

What you guys are talking about is called "simulator sickness". This has to do with the eyes seeing things that the brain cannot match to other stimuli from the physical environment (IE You are sitting in a chair but you are looking down on a landscape from the air, flying around, etc). A lot of the symptoms can be avoided by having very good refresh rates (something which shutter glasses can't really do well yet), extremely high resolutions and field-of-view, and a good brightness/contrast ratio.

The best way to alleviate this problem is to adjust the focal distance from the eye to the "screen" so that it approximates 10-20 feet or more, which puts much less strain on our eyes because to focus on a target at this distance, the sight lines of our eyes approximate to parallel which causes less eyestrain. Most flight simulators that use front projection systems have distance from PEP (Pilot Eye Point) to screen surface of at least 10 feet. To achieve a synthetic distance approximating 10 feet to the display, the glasses need to imploy collimated displays/mirror systems, which last I checked there were a few out there that could do this.

The biggest problem is, however, filling the human field of view for a true immersive experience. Most head-mounted VR display systems can only cover a small percentage of the human field-of-view (which humans have approximately +/-100 degrees horizontal and +55degrees/-70degrees vertical FOV). Flight simulators apply display coverage of this magnitude by implementing multiple projection channels to adequately fill the FOV at a desired resolution. The amount of video processing power and simulation database management needed for such tasks is still quite high and not in the range for consumer use (SGI/Sun Infinite Reality systems are like 70-150k and up, not including the projection system itself!). If you also factor in having a stereo image, you are basically doubling the resolution required! Yoinks!

My 2 cents!

Ohh I don't doubt that someday the tech will catch up to Snow Crash-level immersion... I can't wait for that day to come! :)

Edited to add: I figured I'd toss out some onfo about this sort of thing... I used to work in the simulation industry for about 8 years :D FINALLY I can post something that I learned while on the job LOL

From another thread:

From: Andrew Linden

LL wasn't always a software company. It was started as an exploration into haptic hardware, but we needed a virtual world to interface with the hardware. First things first.

I got a chance to test out VR when I was younger before this was known. I had played it for over an hour totally submersed. When I came out a drunk man could walk more straight then I could. The problem was
A) I was in wisconsin
B) I was at the state far
C) I was a minor.
Boy did the officers hav a good time with me.

It is also a form of motion sickness. The idea that you are moving according to your eyes but you cannot feel it. I am not so bad now but also a few years later I worked at a video cafe where we had Decent and other such games. Alot of people could not play it becuase of the dizziness they would suffer afterwards.

While I am not opposed to VR you have to wonder about content. If we start offering content for VR, or joysticks, or midi. How much is that gonna cost joe blow out of his subscription cost and what is the chance that he might actually use it? Would there be special content that I would be enied if I did not have such items? That's why the VR gaming systems like the one I tested turned into a tourist novelty attraction instead of being in every arcade in the world.
