No doubt, but is anyone who is not a basic player a "rich person"? One can find an example of just about anything; let's talk about the the common condition, not the exception to the rule.

Thanks Richie, I had not heard of gimpshop, can you tell me where to find it. Sounds interesting. I am fairly good with computers, I have several software programs and have on order Maya, Poser 6.0, have 3D Studio Max....and hope to start creating things for SL. So I may try my hand at selling. I would like to have a nice small house but with the cost of the preimum account, my DSL bill, and other personal expenses in RL I just can't affor to own anything other than the maybe the 512 m2 lot and you really can't put that much in it. That is what bothers me. If they want more basic account members to upgrade they should give them something they can really use. It is harder to live within your prim-means on a small plot of land, but not impossible. It takes ingenuity, learning some building tricks.. and TEXTURES!! to add visual richness. I started out with a 512 lot and had a lovely house with goodies, but it was all done on the prim-cheap. It's like living on any other kind of budget... you have to be creative. _____________________

1. Is Second Life a game to you?
Just like 1st life, yes ![]() 2. Are you just in SL to make money? No, I'm there so that I don't melt out of overboredom. 3. Are you in SL to have fun and enjoyment (As away of getting away from the stresses and strains of rl for a while)? See 2. 4. Does the fact that you have to pay for almost anything you do in SL impact on how you feel about SL? I must have missed something glaringly obvious to everyone else for months then, 'cause I spent a grand total of about L$381 since last December. 5. Why are you in second life in the first place? Because if I weren't I'd be gritting my teeth and carving wood and painting and running back and forth and posting on webboards and spouting nonsense and reading silly books, basically turning everyone around completely insane. And I get to ride a mammoth in SL ![]() _____________________

Does the fact that you have to pay for almost anything you do in SL impact on how you feel about SL? 5. Why are you in second life in the first place? 1. No, not a game. Far too open-ended to be a game. No more than collecting stamps or making pottery is a game. 2. I'm not in Second Life only to make money, but I certainly make money in SL. I'm here for the creative outlet and all the smart people I meet. 3. Absolutely here for fun and enjoyment. Nothing is more satisfying to me in my off-time than product development, believe it or not. I build the kind of stuff that I would love to buy. 4. Nothing on Earth is free. You have to pay people for the time they take to make cool things for you, you have to pay for Linden Lab's infrastructure. 5. I'm in SL because it's the most wildly creative opportunity I've ever had. It's also a great business sandbox, which appeals to me greatly. Little to no risk, plenty of rewards. Awesome. At least from what I have seen in the past two months it makes it extremely hard for a basic account holder to really do anything more than have some fun. They really can't own a house, make, buy, or use a lot of things that are available in here unless they pay a lot of money. To me this is what it is called A Second Life, at virtual release from reality. Let's have fun people. I really don't understand these sorts of expectations. You want Linden Lab to give you a free user account, and then you want everything else to be free, too? If you must think of SL as a game, think of it as a pretty darn cheap game. Ten bucks a month with no signup fee is ridiculously cheap. In exchange you get to hold some land, you get a chunk of land for very cheap, which you can flip for obscene profit, and you get L$500 a week. Not a bad deal at all. Additionally, you don't need anything in SL to have fun. Unless you have the need to buy things firmly impressed upon your soul. In which case... good luck with that. _____________________
Furthermore, as Second Life goes to the Metaverse, and this becomes an open platform, Linden Lab risks lawsuit in court and [attachment culling] will, I repeat WILL be reverse in court. Second Life Forums: Who needs Reason when you can use bold tags? |

1. Is Second Life a game to you? Tough question. There are a lot of levels to consider. On purely recreational terms, it's more a hobby to me than a game. But then I would say the same about EVE Online. But I have made lasting friendships here and felt emotions here that certainly no other game has provided. It's not a lifestyle. Nor a business. It's really not the metaverse to me. I don't think it's going to be the new intarweb. I feel no particular loyalty to SL or LL, though as long as the people I love are here I guess I'll keep coming! So yeah, hobby/game/whatever. I wont get hung up on the terms ![]() 2. Are you just in SL to make money? No. Not even 'just'. I don't make money in SL. Though I used to! I made lots! But that was mainly before L$ = USD$ and the birth of GOM. It was never done for the money. 3. Are you in SL to have fun and enjoyment (As away of getting away from the stresses and strains of rl for a while)? Yes. However it's more stress than fun and enjoyment. ![]() 4. Does the fact that you have to pay for almost anything you do in SL impact on how you feel about SL? I don't believe that to be the case at all. If I spend money in SL it's to buy something. But you don't have to buy anything! I believe you can have an entertaining Second Life without spending a single Linden Dollar ever. 5. Why are you in second life in the first place? In the first place, I came to check it out because it looked cool. Didn't know anyone that played, had never heard of it til the day I signed up. Then I took to building, and that was the main reason I kept coming back. When 1.6 came it effectively excluded me from SL. Now I've all but quit because it's just to bug ridden for me to do any of the things I used to enjoy about SL, so the only reason I come back to Second Life is to keep in touch with the friends I've made here. Since standing and chatting is about all I can do ![]() |

Man.... you can't afford more than a basic account and you're buying Maya? Seriously - you don't need any of those programs to make money in SL. I have Poser, I would recommend that, but seriously - GIMP or Photoshop are all you really need. Cancel all the expensive programs, make a few nice items to sell to cover your tier - 2048 = $15 a month (I think). You only need to sell $4000L worth of goods to cover that. I know I didn't answer the questions but here are my answers in a nutshell: SL is a place to socialize & be creative, I didn't start out here to make money, but I suddenly started making some while doing something I enjoy. Stick around, make some friends, make some stuff for us to enjoy. |

Q1. Is It Just A Game?
Depends on your definition of game - some people call the london exchange is a 'game', and the definition that lifes a game yes it is, but then again so's the shopping (when you shop the way i do ![]() Q2. Are You In It For The Cash? Errr.. Im in it to make enough cash to cover expenses sl wise - inc convertion to rl money to pay for sl land and premium account - what ever 'profit' i make goes into creating more items, a charity or general fun. Q3. You here for fun? Im everywhere for fun ![]() Q4. Pay Dismay? Nope, If you are fair and wise you can get most things free, inc your premium account (if you get the L$ to cover it) Q5. Why? A few years ago i would play on the playstation - particulary Tony Hawk, TOCA and Gran Turismo - and i wondered, when would i be able to drive this car off the track, down the street to the skate park and start doing some tricks, all while listening to my music, and mayeb then go to a festival, and finally back to my hoose in my gran turismo car with my iron maiden tshirt on and a skate board in the back? Then a few years later (and older), i saw an article in EDGE magazine, a games magazine that also covered the development side and the history of gaming, talking about the controversal 'Twin Towers Recreation' and how everything in it was cosumer created, seeing this was the game for me, but i needed a pc that was able to play this and it took me about a year to get that pc (not just for sl, im an avid gamer and computer collector, from c64 to amd64, and needed something to keep up with the gaming.), and everything the article told me about this was true, it may not have reached the level of my dreams yet (tony hawk Wasteland SL edition? or even ToCA SL?), but its getting there... Oh and a couple of days ago i got in my Dominous Car with my Iron Maiden tshirt on with a skate board in the back while listening to my own music, now for the hoose.... ![]() _____________________

I searched and found Maya for $1999 to $6999; don't know what version we're talking about here. But the good news is, there is free shipping for the holidays! ![]() Reading that the number one complaint of owners of Hummers (MSRP: $53,910-$57,650) was fuel economy was a "things that make you wanna go hmmm" moment, too. ![]() |

Thank You All
11-09-2005 08:00
I would really like to thank very one for all the comments to my post. With the exception of a couple ummmmmm comments everyone was extremely candid, friendly and helpful and you all have helped me rethink the program. I definitely plan on staying in the program. I am having fun and guess I am going to have to learn how to make low prim items so I can stay in my small low prim house at least for now. That is unless I can find a "rich lady who needs a roommate....LOL! Seriously, It has been fun so far and I am sure it will continue to be. I have tried to add quite a few of you to my buddy list, not sure if it worked or not, when I do does that mean you get on my friends list in sl? I sure hope so. I need to learn how to make more things so I can help pay for my having fun. For personal financial reasons I am unable to afford anything other than a basic 512 m2 piece of land and will have to learn to life with that unless I can start making some linden dollars to convert to pay for it. No I am not expecting LL to give me everything, I just feel that if they want more people to get involved in the program they could make it a little easier. No the idea of renting has crossed my mind and I did find a very reasonable place thanks to a good friend in SL and will be checking that out. If anyone sees me in SL and wants to add me as a friend please do so. Just for informational purposes only I do have a web design business in rl at www.georgeswebdesign.com, and I am not promoting that in here so don't take me wrong, I just wanted to point out that I do professional web design for commercial, personal and memorial web pages for people. I do charge US$ for my work so I know where some of the creators are coming from.
Again I want to thank everyone for their comments and information and I hope to add to my ever growing list of friends in SL. All a great bunch of people. P.S. I hang around in the welcome areas a lot of the time to meet and help where I can all the new people coming into the program and have requested to become a mentor. See you all in SL! |
