For some reason when I read the title of this thread, I read "Hoss!"

<sigh>

Isn't the plural of Ho, 'Hoes', anyway? ;)

LOL! I did too at first! I'm thinking "Someone has a beef against the guy from 'Bonanza'?" *cue burning wild west map*

I think the correct plural is Ho's.

Shouldn't there be an "h" in "73m"?

That is old school thinking. H is a waste of space. This post was brought to you be the letter Z and the number 6.

Wow! Thanks for the translation. :)

But ok I have a question... How did this kind of speaking develop and why?

It was developed in the 90's mostly by teens as a way to get around automated profanity filters in chat software. It then evolved into a way to chat online without parents knowing what you were saying and in general as just a way to be "cool". It's called 1337 speak, or "Leet" speak, as in elite speak. That is a term from the hacker realms. A person who knows how to program is known as "leet". They were generally admired/feared since they could nuke you pretty quick if you pissed them off.

leet speak is pretty much the realm of 12 year olds these days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet for more info, if you are interested.

I've been feeling your pain bit by bit since the day I went online. I've gone from being horrified at the butchery of the English language I found to using "lol" myself on occasion and, yes, accidentally learning l337. :p

To be more precise, certain common typos have become popular in online speech in general ... and by extension, l337 in particular. "Pwned" (originally a typo when attempting to say "Owned";) is one such example. "Teh" (intended to be "The";) is another. Frequently, these typos are adopted and actually become part of the "correct" way to speak, at least in l337. Consequently, most people using it will spell "the" as "t3h" or "73h" ... but never or almost never "th3" or "7h3."

That's mostly correct save for one caveat: exposure to it has caused many other types of people (such as myself -- I'm not going to list my age, but I'm at least twice as old as 12 ;) ) to learn it as well, especially, ironically enough, those of us with a gift for language and grammar. After all, we naturally figure it out quickly.

Note that the first person to comment on knowing what I said is 24 herself. :p

I agree Alex. I'm 40 myself and had never heard or it until about a year or so ago. However I have never had much trouble reading it. I would also like to point out that by translating leet to English I automatically exclude myself from being "leet". Translating leet so the "non-leet" can understand it is a cardnal sin, or so I am told.

Personally I think leetspeak is silly, but I can see the draw for teens. Hehe, when I was a teen back in the early 80's I was one of the people who helped invent the goth look. =)

Every generation has it's "thing".

Hey, has anyone made one of those big hats with a feather that blows in the wind? Flexiprim stylee? I guess a wobbly cane would look kinda weird.

"hos" = reminds me of Santa Claus.

"hoss" = reminds me of George Stark. (Read Stephen King's The Dark Half to find out why.)

Can someone be a pimpho? Like, both at the same time? I don't see a need for such a division...

I had this amazing steampunk dream; well, it was more medieval. But it had this big Cadillac that looked more like a knight's helmet, and there were these Renaissance babes that came out--dating dinosaurs or somesuch thing.

Bigot ...

That's one way to look at it. Another is that maybe people who are dressing up as bunnies, hookers, the village people, etc. should be a little more tolerant and less critical.

Just sayin'.

Other words I've learned: Pensi (penis) and everyone on the internet should at least know what "Goatse" is. :D

Heh, Back in the 80's I was wearing black before it became in style.

Wore flannel shirts before them greasy lookin' kids from Seattle made it a fashion statement.
