Sounds like LL has work to do on their memory management. If you have 2GB of RAM and you tell it to use 2GB, it should use all that 2GB before it even thinks about putting anything in a disk cache.

I agree. Maybe we should make a proposal to get them to work on it.

Personally if you need more speed out of your harddrive for SL I'd look into a scsi, raid, firewire, or that new conenction (name evades me right now). Place cache in there and put no other harddrives on the same connection.
Just in case anyone is tempted, firewire isn't faster than normal HDD connections; other than the new one (FW800 I think, which I have yet to see anybody with) it's actually a little bit slower than USB2. :p

Have many people tried the idea rather than just speculating? :)

I would try it, except I don't know of any computer around here with more than 512MB

Yeah thats the tricky thing, you might be able to get away with it with 512mb but I really recomend this only if you have 768mb or more. I know a majority of SL users have 512mb, but there is a good portion that has like a gig or more RAM. And lets face it, RAM is cheap now especially when you compare it to the early days of computing so upgrading an additional 512mb or even a gig shouldn't be too exspensive for those already looking to do some upgrades to their machines (RAM is almost always the better upgrade since you will notice more performance gains over buying a new CPU unless you plan to upgrade your motherboard as well).

Heya ron. I remember you telling me in SL once about this. So i decided to try it. I used ramdrive xp. made a 200MB drive. I have 1gig ram btw. I Formated it to NTFS. Everything worked out ok except When i logged into SL. It loaded faster, But every moment the SL window would freeze for about a second. It became frustrating so i undid everything. Untill i figure out what the problem was, im stuck using a *gasp* hard drive.

If anyone else has trouble and wants to undo it, simply delete the original cache folder (folder too. JUST DO IT :p hack it off, it will grow back). That will cause it to unlink from the ram drive. Second Life will build a new one for you. next just uninstall the ramdrive software. Dont uninstall the resource kit. You will need that in the long run. :)

You could try it, but I find my flash drives to be slower than my HDD and writing and rewriting excessivly to them is known to wear them out.

High-end flash drives like the Lexar 'Lightning' series may work, but then thay may feel a bit expensive. YMMV there.

I did notice this however:

http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Peripherals/Products/Products_GC-RAMDISK%20(Rev%201.1).htm

That may be overkill perhaps. ;)
