Lindens weigh in on floating windows
03-08-2006 18:36
In a reply to my "answers section question" the lindens have weighed in stating it appears that it will be quite a while for this to be implemented(/139/c2/92112/1.html), citing the number of items on the to do list. Lets push this vote over 1000 votes on the OFFICIAL vote. Lets show LL that we really want this feature implemented.

Please visit http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=1070 and vote now move as many votes to this topic as you can. Remember once they acknowlege the vote and put it in production you get your votes back.

This and any idea that takes the clutter off the main viewer is a good idea, I once (long long ago) asked for a "dock/undock" option of scripting/notecards/any other various windows.

As of yet we no see it :-/.

So a big thumbs up I add to this.

The voting proposal mentioned above may be asking for more than is needed to accomplish the goal of getting better use out of two monitors when using SL.

More effective use of SL on two monitors could be accomplished simply by either allowing one to adjust what SL thinks is the horizontal center point of the world, the place where the avatar is depicted. Then to use two monitors effectively one just makes the SL window stretch across both monitors, and sets the avatar centering point in the middle of one monitor, and positions the dialogs, inventory, etc. on the other monitor. This is not the same as being able to drag the dialogs, inventories, etc. out of the SL window.

Alternately, but similarly, allow one to spit the SL window into word view area and interface element area. Stretch the SL display across both monitors and put the diving line where you get an acceptable result, presumably near the inner edge of one monitor.

If I understand correctly the idea of being able to drag the dialogs, etc. out of the SL window, like one can do in Photoshop, is difficult because SL uses OpenGl, which doesn't lend itself to doing that.

Trouble with this is not all dual monitor users use the same resolution on each monitor.
Like me for example I run my main monitor at 2048x1536, and my 2nd at 1280x1024.

2nd issue is, (and possably the worst) it would unessessarily tax the system of rendering 3D across 2 monitors.

Hence my thought years back of docking/undocking various windows "out of" the SL client.

Well, it would be possible to run SL at the same resoultion on both monitors. That is something you can choose, while getting the SL programming staff to do something either impossible or unprofitably expensive is not something you can choose. With the choices I described, on your high resolution monitor, you could put the world on one side and the dialogs on the other - you wouldn't even really need two monitors with a resolution that high.

So one could work for something that is doable, and wouldn't take too awfully much work for the programmers, or one could ask for something that is said to be essentially impossible and has already been rejected.

As i said before i could live with a dock area OUTSIDE of the game view that allows you to have your utility windows open in that dock area. This could even be set where you can have your gaming area appear on the left or right side which ever is your primary monitor and then put your accessories in the other window.

Sadly it looks like any interest in getting this feature added has waned. There have been no recent addition of votes to the proposition but i still hold out hope that LL will do it.

You might be able to generate more support by doing things such as: Include a link to the discussion thread and the voting page url for the proposition and such in your signature. Contact the people who have supported this idea and ask them to do the same. Make some picketing signs and have a fun friendly protest at the welcome area. Be sure to take some pictures of the protest and email them Snapzilla. Get on the #secondlife IRC channel and promote the idea there. Sign up with the forums at sluniverse.com and secondcitizen.com and promote the idea there. Ask your friends and acquaintances in SL to bump the thread.

Stuff like that.

Great idea Kovu

Having to move the building window around to see what's behind it, and deal with group chatter, local chatter and other distractions makes building less enjoyable. Clearing the screen, so all you see is what you are building would be fantastic.

You would need a graphics card with two connectors for the monitors.
