I don't think it's a prank.

And Torley's movie is more fun :) .

the redtail?
04-03-2006 14:38
Tor, are you referring to the redtail video? Is this new video a continuation of that work? Is this really coming in 1.9.1? I dont dare to hope, since the video was posted on April 1.

Watch the Torlified video, yall. :) :D

It appears to contain flexible attachments, hardware lighting and possibly even some better physics than we have now.

Whoa, Torley's video is much better than Ben's. I like how she shows a lot about the new lighting in it.

Whoa, the Torley video is cool. Nice pacing and the music was lots of fun. Really showed off how sexy the new lighting engine is. This could be a fun release. :)

Hey, Tor. Am I seeing some new physics in your video? Your car sure drives smooth.

Some HW lighting already in 1.9.0?
04-03-2006 16:21
I notice on the DEBUG / RENDERING / FEATURES menu that there is already a choice for HW lighting and the choice is checked by default. Disabling it does seem to degrade lighting somewhat. So, it seems that some HW lighting is already in 1.9.0, eh?

I don't care what the cynics say, I'm going quietly hysterical with anticipation waiting for The Flexiness. And most excellent video, Torley. :D Guess, I'm a fangurl now. :p

i will assassinate the first unconcient idiot that will think making a haircut with 250 floppy prims is cool and not affecting my framerate

Loved the Torley video.. Funny thing is, while I was watching it, Rammstein's new song, Mann Gegen Mann (I think) started playing on my radio.. Torley's whimsical and kinetic video seemd to mesh with the heavy tones of the song perfectly. (I don't ahve audio on the computer I watched the video on) It was really cool.

Darn, does this mean I have to stop my "prim pubes" project? :)

This is neat and all but I am interested in how these new additions will effect the general performance of SL.

Hardware lighting should mean Local Lighting no longer lags like crazy.

I, for one, very much look forward to the lighting fix. Then maybe we can get some shader tech into SL.

Floppy attachments? I don't want to touch that one.

The video raises a few questions:

Why does it look like it's playing at about 3x normal?

It appears to have been made in a completely empty sim - sure, performance looks great (playing at about 3x normal though...), but have you ever been in a completely empty sim? Your fps skyrockets - what is all this light and bendy going to do to a NORMAL sim?

As usual, quite a lot of resources must have been exspended on this latest 'Ooooooh! Shiny!' - and what use is it, except allowing Torley to whirl about like a dayglo dervish?
Wouldn't the resources have been better spent on the April Fool's Day 'Known Issues' list?

As for 'improved physics'... how can you tell given 3x normal speed playback and an empty sim?

Yup - but on the plus side, your floppy bits will now flop authentically! :p

Hello, my name is Doc, I haven't liked anything developed for SL in the last three months.

Reason it's 3x as fast: SL's capture rate for video goes about that speed; it drops frames.

Applications for hardware lighting: a lot. Faster performance, more dramatic architecture, an so on.

Applications for floppy prims: furry tales, dynamic hair, capes, flags, and about a dozen other things.

Better physics? There are none in that video. The sim slows down to a crawl when torley drops those 400000 glowing spheres.

These two changes are going to be nice additions to the client. Is it havok2? No. But it'll make our content look better.

You can go back to detesting everything, Doc.

I assumed that's because it was. You know, editing decision or something.

The effect on the sim will be absolutely minimal since both effects are client side. It'll have to stream, what, a couple more bits per prim at most? And that's only if flex is enabled on them since data's only sent for deviations to default prim perameters. Most likely you'll be able to turn the rendering of the effects off so if it does affect your framerate badly (which I doubt) you can just deselect them in the options. And I'm 100% sure that the new lighting is actually going to speed things up no end.

Are you saying SL should be left to stagnate? I think flexible prims is going to be a really good adition to what is, at the moment, generally a very static looking world. Besides, there's only so many coders you can have on any particular job before it becomes counter-productive. And as for fixing known issues; hardware lighting is fixing a known issue - the horrible problem with local lighting being totally sucky.

From: someone

It's not all that hard to find an empty sim you know... Anyway, personally I think the impression that there were improved physics simply came from the fact that the video was speeded up, nothing more.

:p

EDIT: Ack, beaten to it by LF! And with a better answer about the video speed too! :D
