More useful statistics can be found on a Harvard Business Review article on SL. Here's a summary from http://www.raphkoster.com:
  1. 165,000 total active residents,
  2. of which 65,000 are paying in some form,
  3. and “over 3000? are making real world money,
  4. averaging $20,000 a year each (skewed by the really high earners, of course).

Anybody know why today we've lost ~10,000 residents? The front page is only showing that there are 243,671 residents.

I was wondering the same thing, Moopf. Maybe the Lindens did some sort of purge of basic or trial accounts that have been inactive for a certain period of time. They have been known to do that on occasion.

My guess is that all the controversy here, on NWN, Clickable Culture and elsewhere have caused them to purge very old, unused accounts. Probably a good thing.

Anyone else get the feeling that LL is trying to inflate their account numbers in order to tempt perspective buyers?

Yes. But if they are purging inactive accounts, they are being honest about it.

I don't have a teen - what, are they free now, too?

I don't think I want one to be honest, sitting around, eating things and whining.

Great question!

Internally, we count our total number of residents in a couple of different ways, all for valid reasons. A couple of these different methods are: accounts in good standing, active last 30 days, active last 60 days, etc…

Even accounts in good standing can be counted a few different ways because we have numerous status' accounts can be in, some of which can be confusing as to whether they are "in good standing".

Anyway, to make a long story short, we've decided to tweak what we felt was a better representation of what our current resident count is.

So no, 10,000 residents weren't just eliminated. We now feel they were being improperly counted and adjusted the counter as such. As always, we strive to be as open and honest about our resident count as possible.

Recently, yes. When I started only a few months ago (end of January), I think we were just breaking 5,000 on Sundays, so yes, this is a nice jump. (If anyone has actual numbers, that would be nice.)

And now for something seriously as serious as this serious thread.

Hey Seraph! Nice name! =)

In my opinion, that is exactly what it is.

Cocoanut Cookie: What exactly do they define as "inactive" though.

Seriously, I think it's all about the numbers. They want to be able to say "We've been around 3 years, and we have xxx,xxx users, and with your investment of $x,xxx, xxx(or more) LL will be able to move forward with x plan, which will easily return you x%.

Business is business is business. They all start with a neat concept, but sooner or later, the customers become nothing than a tool to attract investors with the end objective being either selling to a larger company, or going public.

I think this thread can explain most of the 13,000 extra accounts.....
