From: Usagi Musashi But like all other problems with CC you don`t know if they are fake of not. Meaning if they are by its the person using it fo rthe game. As for "I just had the feeling that Usagi maybe thought my RL day of birth was this November." What is this account of yours a second or third..sorry i am confused........
Meeting new people but stopping the bad ones fron hurting other over and over again is the point here. No Usagi, this is my first account, I just meant that IRL I wasn't born last month. Sorry, I'm a bit touchy when lectured like a 5-year old (or a 1-month old). And I bet you were new too once. And entitled to your opinion. Anyway, that's pathetic. It's dawn and I sit here posting away, just because SL is down. Have fun, I'm going to bed.

From: Robin Linden We certainly agree that there's an increasing economic cost to these attacks, for residents and for Linden Lab. We're preparing background information and have started regular meetings with the federales. That's very encouraging to hear People may think twice if there's a precedent of serious consequences for people who attempt to bring down the grid.

LL created this software to allow people to bring their hopes and desires into existence and do things we can't do IRL. But There is always a bad apple who abuses their given abilities (whether it be admin or whatnot). I agree that linden labs has every right to bring this to the authorities and should. But the fact is that anyone can crash a sim. They are just so fragile. I would say there needs to be a line to cross. You can crash a sim or 2 but if you cause a grid wide disturbance then it should be acted on by more then just banning them. Griefers don't care about being banned. It doesnt stop them. if it stops 1, another will be like OH THAT LOOKS FUN! Several MMORPGs are taking actions with hacking, or disturbing game play. W0rld of Warcr4ft has a spy ware tool known as the Warden. It scans your computer while your playing the game looking for 3rd party hacks. Some think its invading privacy but it works. They sue people a lot. LOL

Actually, LL has an active attorney many will recognize - Ginsu Linden. As LL is located in CA, USA any and all legal action would be as it relates to the laws of both the state and the country. Federal laws can and do apply - especially for internet commerce - which altho many look at SL as a "game" - this is actually a service product which we the "players" purchase.
The attack on the grid was not only malicious but will have cost the company in additional man hours and potentially lost new customers. It will also represent a loss of revenue by way of trickle down whereby various producers of product within the service will have experienced a loss of revenue. LL can demonstrate to the penny how much income they average in any given time period as justification for whatever dollar figure they assign as their loss. They post the exchange of monies right on the websites front page.
that being said...this was on the police blotter today:
Date: Monday, December 12, 2005 Violation: Terms of Service: Global Attacks Region: Ambleside Description: Global attack Action taken: Suspended 14 days.
Pretty sad this was all this particular offender got.

I voted no

I voted no, i'll be the only person out of 6 to admit it and stand up for my beliefs, no matter how much everyone's going to undoubtedly flame me for it.
Before you get started calling me a griefer, I have NEVER had an abuse report filed against me, never caused any problems whatsoever, nor do i associate with the type that do. Everyone that knows me in world is most likely to tell you the same.
The reason I voted no is running to lawsuits IMO is a waste of time, energy and resources. Though I DO agree something has to be done, simply throwing around lawsuits is NOT going to solve the issue, there's always someone out there that thinks they will be able to get away with it.
What LL needs to do is fix the problem within the software itself. All of the recent attacks have run on the same principle; self duplicating objects. What can be done to fix this issue? IMO, require that any object that self replicates cannot spread outside of the sim. Self replication DOES have many uses, but when you allow it free access to spread, the recent attacks show the end result. As a programmer myself, I cannot fathom that if a certain flag is enabled, another is automatically set, and if attempted to overide, denied by the compiler. Another option if leaving sims is required, how about setting a limit to how many times an object can replicate before it is no longer allowed to replicate? Based on second hand reports, the recent attacks spawned hundreds of millions to billions of prims; there is absolutely no need for this many prims for an actual non-malicious script.

Ginsu? *puts on a set of platemail* Sounds dangerius. Why not Bobbit Linden? Thats much better I can only imagine how this is effecting the lindens. It's probably even costing the company money. Yea it could probably be done very easily. They stopped Guns from shooting nocopy bullets so they can do this too. ;p There was a time i thought about making shadering grenades that shoot pins (known as hedgehog grenades in anarchy online). But i decided not to after someone told me what it would do to the sim. EDIT: Sorry if im sounding silly but im trying to keep the morality at a acceptable level hehe

I say yes. By this time, the Lindens would know the difference between a deliberate attack as opposed to a script mishap. Good to know they are discussing these issues.

What LL needs to do is fix the problem within the software itself.
And once duplicating objects are taken care of, all of our problems will forever cease. Until the next exploit is found, then once that is taken care of, all of our problems will forever cease. I guess what you want is 100% perfect software, flexible yet un-exploitable. LL could spend a few years working on that, and that only. Then, a demanded change would be implemented, and it'd start all over again. People like this are not going to put their hands in their pockets and walk away once duplicating objects are taken care of. They'll keep banging at the infrastructure until they find a breach - and eventually all of those breaches will be nerfed by contingencies until the only logical thing to do is take away LSL completely. Yeah, I know, that sounds like a slippery slope, and it is, because that's what it would be. There's a balance of "creativity versus constraint" that has to be struck with LSL, and granted, Linden is finding that balance right now. But malicious activity is not a "software flaw". Nor should go unpunished, nor does it go unpunished in most situations. It doesn't matter if it's a "game" or not. This was denial of service, plain and simple. It's no less illegal to hack into, crash, or otherwise maliciously disable someone else's server - it doesn't matter if that server houses business documents, medical documents, games, porn, or e-commerce. Just like the crime of 'breaking and entering' has little to do with what they actually can carry off; they broke into a premise illegally. Breaking into a poor man's house is just as illegal as breaking into a mansion or estate. Speaking of which, if people break into your house and rob you, I sure do hope that you "blame the quality of the lock" versus calling the police.

I hope the authorities catch the person behind this attack, and that LL shows his/her AV being hung by the nads on SL's frontpage, next to the jail sentence he/she got IRL.

So we can throw them at each other?
Anyways, legally prosecuting isn't all its cracked up to be.
Do they really want to go to court? Do they want to be in the press for it? Do they want to annoy the FBI? Cause the FBI probably has higher priorities than some game.

I don't think LL need to spend a single cent on legal action. They merely need to announce that they are considering legal action against Mr. John Smith of 123 Some Avenue, ArbCity and watch the self-policing begin

The rw legal ramifications of this person's actions would be much more severe than a suspension.

After all, the grid attack itself didn't shut the sims down.
