Today I was puttering around my land and turned to see person behind me in a witch avatar holding a handgun. Instinctively I pulled mine and got two rounds off sending the person far away. The person returned a bit later and asked why I shot him, my only reply was because you approached me without saying anything and with a gun in your hand. So he left in a huff bidding me good day. This person has no credit info on file and joined like a month ago. Did I act in haste? Or should I have not discharged my weapon at all?

It's all a videogame in the end.

Suzanne: "SL or RL"

After posting it I decided it was in bad taste, particularly in light of some recent posts in these forums.

It is rude of you to repost it.

If it was your Parcel then you were totally justified in doing so.

Nonsense. He acted in haste. Shooting someone just cause they might shoot you is silly. Just because they were holding a gun doesn't mean they were going to shoot you.

They could have, and should have, filed an AR against you.

If it was on his Parcel filing an AR would have done very little good. And since it was on his parcel theres not much the victim can do about it other than forget it ever happened and move on.

Maybe you should have froze the guy first. Still a bit abrupt, but it would come off as less hostile.

Vares is right. It makes no sense to respond to a possible threat of griefing with a pre-emptive action such as this, because the outcome will be an AR on yourself. An AR that says - potential griefer: did nothing, potential victim: griefed first.

This isn't true; the TOS applies anywhere. This hasn't changed, has it?

Pre-emptive strike! We all learn by example.

HELLO OH NO YOU MIGHT GRIEF ME BUT GUESS WHAT I WILL GRIEF YOU FIRST!

If the OP's join date is at all accurate, there's no real excuse for this behavior.

if someone wears guns as a fashion statement, they have to be ready for this kind of response.

If an AR would work or not is pretty debatable. If it is your land, you pretty much decide what happens there. In the worst case you could put up a warning of it being your personal orbit-testing zone that shall only be entered at the person's own risk. :3

Turn off push on your parcel? That way you can giggle maniacally at griefers when they shoot you and the bullets go "ptwing!" off your mighty chest.

*ponders this* Sometimes, the combat friendly sims crash, sending their inhabitants throughout the surrounding sims as they log back in. In this case, they won't have time to remove said weaponry as they appear.

Yes, a 'Hello' or something would be nice, but maybe said person was interested in watching what you were doing and didn't want to disrupt you? It is considered polite in RL to wait to talk to people when they are finished with what they are doing, if it requires a lot of concentration. And cursing prims does take a lot of concentration ;) I usually say, "Hello, may I help you?" after I've finished to indicate that I'm done with what I was doing. That lets them know it's safe to chat.

Frankly, I wait until they make a threat or fire before doing anything. After that, it's open season and that can be fun.

It sure as hell wasn't debateable as far as LL was concerned when I shot Ole Fitzcarraldo off my land after he refused to leave and banning him didn't work. The little punk was my only AR and mark on my record. A week later he took down the grid and was banned for good. :p

I also think you acted a bit quickly. The phrase, "I hit him back first" comes to mind. :P

Arshile!! 1. was it fun? 2. did it make you smile? 3. Did you get on with your day? Freezing him was an option since he was on your land. Another option is to start the conversation= hey nice gun that you are wearing. Like it? How powerful is it? Who made it.. maybe converse with the guy and find out just how nice the weapon is. See if you can find out their intent. Don't let forum threads about how bad griefers are stop you from being the nice guy that you are.

I sincerly hope that you do not have access to RL weapons as you would be a danger with that sort of error of judgement ;)

Lord's Right
09-05-2006 16:30
Dearly Darling,

I think Lord's right in this case. However the more frightening issue is that you are acting like a Republican....
That can get you in big trouble here in SL.

I've made it a point of not owning many weapons here in SL. We hunt our dogs, compete in firearms competitions and actually have a few gold metals in the family for marksmanship. Trust me you don't want to try and break into my RL home unless you feel I need new carpet.

I do have a duck shoot here, a gift, however one of the neighbors's was not happy so I took it away.

The rule of thumb is "If you draw your weapon... use it... just seems awkward here. Those of you who do not know the rule of thumb is: you could hit your wife with what ever you like so long as the object in question was not thicker than your thumb. We have such tiny thumbs here, it just sits wrong with me.

I would have talked to the person first before acting. We want to prevent "griefers" not make them.

Ever Yours,

Mrs Showdog Tiger

Did the witch float?
09-05-2006 16:33
If so, it really was a witch and should have been shot. If it drowned, it was not a witch and should have be left alone.
