Snapzilla has just spiked to 2,000 simultaneous users viewing the site. Do you think this is an attack on the site? It has never been above 200 or so simultaneous users.

Yeah, it's a frequent attack that's hitting most of the third party sites (I've setup SecondServer to deny the requests coming from the IP range concerned), I know FlipperPA has had some similar issues (I also heard that Apotheus might be having them as well).
There's also another possibility -- an over-aggressive crawler, take a look through your logs, see if it's hitting robots.txt. :/ -Adam _____________________

Snapzilla is now down to 1598 visitors, down from 2063. ![]() _____________________

Could it have something to do with the press? SLCC? SoP? Check your referrers, see if a firehose like Slashdot is sending you traffic.

What subnet(s) are the requests coming from? Is it a few or is it zillions?

Well checking with the ISP and looking through the logs, it seems it was not some type attack, but some weird traffic surge from somewhere. There were over 20,000 pictures viewed in under 12 hours last night. The pictures viewed counter is only incremented by going into the picture detail page of a picture. It did not appear to be an out of control spider either, as there are a variety of IP addresses in that period. I haven't yet figured out what caused the traffic surge, but it did put the pictures viewed over 2 million. At least it does not seem to have been a deliberate hit on the site, which is what I was concerned about when I first saw it. Thanks to Merwan for alerting me to it

Finally the snapshots of avatars hugging, kissing, and trying out new hair are reaching the audience they deserve.

Can't you tell from the referrers where the traffic is coming from? Actually I spent some time analyzing stuff today, and several thousand sessions came from the same group of IP addresses after all. Reverse lookups on them pointed to Inktomi and Google, so it does seem the surge was caused by some type of spider activity. The hosting company is still looking into it as well because it caused a huge surge in their network traffic. _____________________

Do you not have referrers in your logs?
The referrers being where people are clicking over from. eg: You probably have a lot of http://secondlife.com referrers.. edit: you probably USED to have a lot of http://secondlife.com referrers. Man, what a scam? I can't believe they're not linking over to you anymore.. Maybe you're not pissed, but I certainly am. What happened to GOM was no big deal compared to what they're doing to you, if you ask me. |

Blaze, Actually for awhile now, most of Snapzilla's daily visits come from direct access, not through another site. However, Secondlife.com has been responsible for less than 10 visits a day as a referral link since the site redesign months ago. By comparison, my forum signature remains the highest referral link, followed by Google, then Torley's blog. I am not bothered by it - the site traffic continues to grow naturally without Linden Lab's help, which is fine with me. Of the nearly 3,000 visitors today, 635 came from referral sites. Here is an example from today: ![]() Compare that to a pre-redesign of secondlife.com (April 22, 2005): ![]() _____________________

They usually go like "Googlebot" as the agent. Do you have agents in your logs? I have an analysis service called LiveStats, and unfortunately it doesn't give me access to the raw headers. The summarized data didn't tell me much - nothing unusual is showing up on the Webcrawlers report except a high number from Yahoo yesterday. I requested the raw IIS logs to take a further look at what is going on, as it has continued off and on today as well. _____________________

What's a spider and why don't you want one?

What's a spider and why don't you want one? A spider is an automated program that is used to index the pages of a web site by search engines. They are generally a good thing, unless they are indexing stuff you don't want them to, or if they suddenly cause a huge traffic surge. _____________________

I remember when RateMyAv was getting slammed pretty hard. The person that was causing mysteriously dropped off of SL and seems to have also disappeared from RL in general shortly after I located and 'had a word' with them.
