I'm neutral on this too. It feels like something was programmed for the sake of programming it. It doesn't really add anything to the interface. Sure it's eye candy, but the entirety of SL is eye candy to a far greater degree (at least once the grahics have loaded). This kind of eye candy is wasted when there is much greater eye candy right behind it.

If that is all it is for - eye candy - (I haven't finished reading this thread yet), then it is doing a definite disservice, in that (a) it's distracting as all hell, and (b) from my experience slows down the whole building process.

It's not eye candy.

It's meant to create a different look for the two operational modes of the pie menu:

1. 'Normal' pie menu mode:
Right click and release the mouse button. Only the clearly bordered menu options can be selected, moving the mouse out of this area and clicking will cancel the menu.

2. 'Gesture' mode
Right click and HOLD the mouse button (pie menu is now the faded menu), the WHOLE SCREEN functions as pie menu, and you can select any option by just dragging that mouse in the arc defined by the menu option. This is meant to be able to do 'mouse gestures', like in e.g. firefox. For instance: right click, left gesture is a 'take'.

IMHO this should be toggleable, as canceling the gesture mode is quite tricky (either move your mouse back in the center of the pie menu and release button, or move it to one of the empty pie parts)

huh?

I guess they did this then to make SL more like Firefox. (I have Firefox too, and I still have no idea what you are talking about.)

O.K., never mind, now I'm hopelessly confused. I am not talking about using the pie menu for doing animated gestures as an avatar.

I've been talking about using the pie menu to BUILD - to put something in edit. Where you click on something to edit it and it goes this little visual *SPROING!* thingie that half the time prevents you from actually clicking on "edit" as you wanted to, but wind up putzing around trying to get that part to be clickable.

Apparently this is just something I'm not really suppsed to understand, but simply mess around with long enough so that it is only a SMALL additional time hang-up in building, instead of an inconsistent who-knows-why-it's-doing-what-it-is additional time hang-up in building.

You just wave your mouse in the direction of the selection you want Coco. I really like it actually.

edit: by gesture Damanios means mouse-gesture.

12-Newer avatars act extremely codependent and make everyone their Friend and message you within 5 minutes of logging into SL. Older avatars are reclusive, unhappy and bitchy -- and some even extremely full of themselves. Please fix their AI subroutines to make older avatars happier and humbler and newer avatars quiter and less stalkier. ;-p

hahahaha!

So is there a reason why it takes me ages to actually get it to select "Edit" because it keeps going to the second menu every time?

I'm not a fan of this "more like Firefox" stuff, after all many of us choose NOT to use Firefox, and I for one am not a fan of being forced to use Firefox-like stuff in SL, especially when it was perfectly acceptable before the 'update'.

Actually, do any experts in the field have a professional opinion on how that pie menu flash would affect people with epilipsy?

I know there's plenty of stuff out there not controlled by LL that could affect these people, or could be made to affect these people, but the interface is something they can't avoid simply hiding staying to certain sims.

Not sure about the first bit, need to use it more... I've only been on for a short time since the update, but so far I liked it.

The old way annoyed me actually, maybe it was only me though. I always found it kinda clunky. I didn't think of it as just being like Firefox, using a mac I'm used to waving the mouse around to juggle windows... I get so frustrated on a PC when that doesn't do anything.

Any particular reason you choose not to use Firefox? Curious. But... if someone chooses not to use IE, might they then object if IE-like stuff (whatever that may be) is introduced?

I haven't tried this yet because I didn't know it exists and I guess its not very "discoverable." But this worries me because of the known problem/bug of clicking on something on the edge of your screen.

If you use the pie menu on something that is on the extreme left of the screen, you often end up automatically selecting the left pie wedge option due to some kind of built-in mouse movement.

Usually this means you inadvertently friend someone. If you do it on the right hand side of the screen you usually inadvertently delete something.

If the whole pie thing is reduced to gestures this kind of stuff will happen a whole lot more seems to me.

Before the update... you could hold right click and select the menu options by releasing the button. I'm not seeing any new functionality except now you can move your mouse farther out. I thought the update would let you cycle through the More options in the pie menu without having to click more than once (which would've been cool). All the update did really is make it so when you single-right-click there's a random chance of hitting a random menu option O_o

Why not get to fixing the BUGS and not tweaky little things to the UI!! Sheesh

I think usability is a big issue in the current version of SL. I consider the clunky interface to be a bug. ^_^

Making people who don't want to use the gestural menu have to see the pie menu shrink does not improve usabilty or make the interface less clunky. It makes the interface look like garbage to people who want to use the pie menu the old way.

If you know of anyone that doesn't like the shrinking pie menu please ask them pull up this thread and choose option three.
