Chris sends a general IM that the grid will be down at 1:00 p.m. PST; 4 minutes later at 10:00 a.m. he announces the grid will close NOW! And it does. I can be patient and rationalise the patches and versions and subsequent bugs and fixes, but to close SL in such a manner manner is thoughtless and borders on incompetence. Use some common sense, folks.

I thought they announced that 1.7.1 was coming out today a few days ago?

The way I see it is if the update makes things better then it needs to be done ASAP!

Sometimes RL, and those in it, are thoughtless and incompetent. Sometimes it just appears that way.

From: Enabran Templar I thought they announced that 1.7.1 was coming out today a few days ago? They did, so I assume this downtime must be related to it. However, they usually announce when will be the downtime for updates, and for this they didn't, so it is confusing. As for the original post, I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over what amounts to a typo. "Incompetence" is pretty strong. You have no idea what is actually going on behind the scenes. If the grid went down because someone went all Memoirs of an Invisible Man and spilled his coffee on his keyboard, and a whole room full of servers began sparking and laser beams started firing out of control and the whole place blew up, then that would be incompetence. Erroneously announcing a time and then changing it is an unforseen emergency at best and a simple mistake at worst. Either way, it's a far cry from incompetence. LL is pretty good at what they do.

You're right, the Concierge email yesterday with the visible distribution list was a much better example of incompetence

I see that nobody has even entertained the idea that maybe the grid was brought down immediately for a reason.
Such as an exploit that was found, that we don't know about.
If we did know about it, people would likely be complaining, "Why didn't they bring the grid down immediately? Why did they wait a few hours?! Why did they give so much warning so that those who knew about the exploit could take advantage of it?"
Some folks need to learn to go with the flow here. 1.1 was "OMGOHNO!" and SL survived. 1.2 was was met with protest and demonstrations, and SL survived, no, thrived, even more. Repeat with 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, and now 1.7.
Just do your breathing exercises and remember:

OK you're correct; I forgot to take my mellow meds today and spoke too harshly; I apologise for using such a strong word. And I did not consider there might be a typo. There, I feel better now - the Prozac kicked in.

I heard there was one version where everyone lost their accounts and had to start over from scratch. That's just something I heard though. I don't know if it's true. Anyway, it's not just the SL is down. It's also that I honestly can't find another game to play in the mean time. o.o; And I have no motivation to do anything creative right now.... why does that give me deja vu??? >.>;

From: Friskles Echegaray I heard there was one version where everyone lost their accounts and had to start over from scratch. Everything was restored from backup when they could finally get Bub to stop swinging from the racks like a monkey.

Well, I'm in with 1.7.1 now and things seem better--so far so good.
I'm in Ice Dragon's Playpen, with 42 in the sim, streaming music and playing tringo and it seems to be going pretty well--everything rezzed.
